Chapter 12: The Truth About Emily
I didn’t sleep.
Again.
It felt like every night brought a new truth I wasn’t ready to hear.
Vanessa sat across from me in the living room.
For the first time since I met her, she looked exhausted.
Not dangerous.
Not confident.
Just broken.
But I couldn’t forget what she had done.
Pain explained things.
It did not excuse them.
“You need to tell me everything,” I said.
She looked down.
“I know.””
“No more lies.””
She nodded.
“Mason deserves the truth.””
The mention of his name made her close her eyes.
“I failed him.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You hurt him.””
“Yes.””
“You hurt Lily.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty made it worse.
Because it meant she knew.
She knew every wound she created.
“Tell me about Emily.””
Her face changed.
Like I had opened a door she had kept locked for years.
“She was perfect.””
I stayed silent.
“She was gentle. Smart. She loved drawing.””
Vanessa looked toward Lily’s room.
“She reminded me of her.””
“Lily?””
She nodded.
“But I was wrong.””
“About what?””
“About what I wanted.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I thought if I could raise Lily differently, if I could control everything, nothing bad would happen again.””
I stared at her.
“You thought control would protect her?””
“Yes.””
“And when she resisted?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I became angry.””
Mason appeared in the doorway.
“Angry?””
Vanessa looked at him.
He stepped forward.
“You punished me because I reminded you of your mistakes.””
Her eyes filled.
“Mason…”
“No.””
His voice shook.
“But I need to know.””
She looked down.
“I was afraid.””
Mason laughed bitterly.
“You were afraid?””
“Yes.””
“Because of me?””
“Because of myself.””
Silence.
For the first time, I saw something human in Vanessa.
Regret.
But regret was not enough.
Not anymore.
“You need to understand something,” I said.
She looked at me.
“You don’t get to hurt children because you’re hurting.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Then my phone rang.
Claire.
I answered.
“Hello?””
“Michael, I found something.””
“What?””
“The original garden footage.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
“Your neighbor’s security system.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does it show?””
Claire hesitated.
“Something important.””
“What?””
“The person who took Lily outside that night.””
I waited.
“Who?””
Her voice became quiet.
“It wasn’t you.””
I closed my eyes.
Relief.
Then confusion.
“Then who?””
A pause.
“Michael…”
“What?””
“The footage shows Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my wife.
She had heard.
Her face went completely pale.
“No,” she whispered.
I stood.
“What did you do that night?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was protecting her.””
My anger rose.
“You took my daughter outside in the middle of the night.””
“I was trying to help her.””
“You terrified her.””
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“She asked for her mother.””
The words stopped me.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She was crying for the mother she lost.””
I looked toward Lily’s room.
“She said she wanted her real mom.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“And I hated that I couldn’t be her.””
Nobody moved.
Then Mason said quietly:
“So you punished her?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know why I did what I did.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She covered her face.
“I know.””
The phone was still in my hand.
Claire was waiting.
“Michael?””
I looked at Vanessa.
At Mason.
At my daughter’s bedroom.
Then Claire said the words that changed everything.
“There’s one more thing on the footage.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“After Vanessa brings Lily back inside…”
I waited.
“What?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“She receives a phone call.””
“From who?””
The silence lasted too long.

Then Claire answered:
“From someone named Emily.””
