Chapter 3: The Hidden Camera
The next morning, the house felt like a battlefield.
Nobody yelled.
Nobody slammed doors.
That almost made it worse.
Silence can be more terrifying than screaming when everyone knows something has changed.
I sat at the kitchen table with Lily beside me.
She was eating pancakes.
A full plate.
No asking permission.
No looking over her shoulder.
Just eating.
And every few seconds, she glanced at me like she was checking whether she was allowed to exist.
That broke my heart.
“Sweetheart,” I said gently.
She looked up.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“You can always eat when you’re hungry.””
She nodded.
“Even if Vanessa says no?””
My throat tightened.
“Even then.””
She seemed to think about that.
Then she took another bite.
Across the table, Mason watched quietly.
He looked like he hadn’t slept.
Vanessa walked into the kitchen.
She was dressed perfectly.
Hair done.
Makeup on.
Like the woman from yesterday had disappeared.
“I think we all need to calm down,” she said.
I looked at her.
“Calm down?””
“Yes.””
She poured herself coffee.
“Everyone is emotional.””
“You hit a five-year-old.””
Her hand paused.
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I lost control.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
Mason pushed his chair back.
“I’m leaving.””
Vanessa turned.
“Excuse me?””
“I’m going to my friend’s house.””
“You’re running away?””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I’m getting away from you.””
The words landed harder than any insult.
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she laughed.
“You have no idea what you’re saying.””
Mason grabbed his backpack.
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
After he left, Vanessa sat across from me.
“You’re letting him manipulate you.””
I said nothing.
She leaned forward.
“Michael, do you really think a teenager understands parenting?””
I looked at her.
“He understands cruelty.””
Her face hardened.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“You’ve already decided I’m the villain.””
I looked toward the hallway where Lily was drawing.
“No. You decided that yourself.””
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she smiled slightly.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
She pulled out her phone.
“I installed cameras in the house months ago.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Cameras?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To protect myself.””
She tapped the screen.
“I knew one day you’d believe Lily over me.””
My stomach turned.
“You recorded your own house?””
“I recorded everyone.””
She turned the phone toward me.
On the screen was footage.
Me.
Coming home late.
Me.
Telling Lily I would make it up to her because I missed her school play.
Me.
Leaving for work while Lily watched from the window.
Vanessa looked satisfied.
“See?””
I stared at the video.
“What am I supposed to see?””
“You’re never there.””
The words hurt because there was truth buried inside them.
But truth mixed with cruelty was still cruelty.
“You used my absence to hurt my daughter.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Her expression changed.
Something darker appeared.
“You think Lily is innocent because she’s five.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa stood.
“She knows how to get what she wants.””
I stared at her.
“She’s a child.””
“She plays you.””
The room went quiet.
Then I heard a small voice.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
Lily was standing in the doorway.
She had heard everything.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Do you think I’m bad?””
My heart shattered.
I immediately walked toward her.
“No.””
I knelt down.
“Never.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“Did I make you mad because I ate?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And that silence told me everything.
I pulled Lily into my arms.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke softly.
“Is this Michael Carter?””
“Yes.””
“I need to talk to you about Vanessa.””
My body went still.
“Who is this?””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“My name is Rachel. I was Vanessa’s babysitter before you married her.””
I looked at my wife.
Vanessa’s face had gone completely pale.
Rachel continued.
“And there’s something you need to know.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“Lily isn’t the first child Vanessa has treated this way.””
I felt the room disappear.
“Who else?””
A long silence followed.
May you like
Then Rachel whispered:
“Her own son.””
