Chapter 10: The Night Lily Disappeared
The room went silent.
Not the normal kind of silence.
The kind where everyone is waiting for something terrible to be revealed.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What are you talking about?””
She didn’t answer.
She just watched me.
Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.
The judge looked between us.
“Mr. Carter?””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know what she means.””
Vanessa tilted her head slightly.
“You don’t remember?””
My stomach tightened.
Because the confidence in her voice scared me.
Claire leaned toward me.
“Michael, think carefully.””
I closed my eyes.
The memories came rushing back.
The night she was talking about.
The night Lily disappeared.
But it wasn’t what Vanessa wanted everyone to believe.
It was eight months earlier.
A Friday night.
I had come home late from work.
Lily was supposed to be asleep.
Vanessa told me she was.
But when I walked upstairs, Lily’s bedroom door was open.
Her bed was empty.
I remembered the panic.
The way my heart stopped.
The way I ran through the house screaming her name.
“Lily!””
No answer.
I called Vanessa.
She calmly walked out of the kitchen.
“She’s not here?””
Those words still bothered me.
Because she didn’t sound surprised.
She sounded prepared.
I remembered running outside.
The street.
The neighbors.
The police arriving.
Then, thirty minutes later, we found Lily.
She was sitting behind the garden shed.
Crying.
Alone.
At the time, we thought she had wandered outside.
A scared little girl.
A terrible accident.
But now…
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
Her expression didn’t change.
The judge looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter, explain.””
Vanessa folded her hands.
“I didn’t want to accuse him without proof.””
Claire stood.
“Accuse him of what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Leaving Lily outside alone.””
My mouth fell open.
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
She looked toward the judge.
“He was exhausted. He came home angry.””
“I was angry because my daughter was missing!””
“You were shouting.””
“Because I was terrified.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Your Honor, this is exactly what I mean.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Your Honor, Mrs. Carter is manipulating a traumatic event.””
The judge looked at Vanessa.
“Do you have evidence?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Yes.””
She pulled out her phone.
My heart sank.
Another video.
Of course.
She pressed play.
The screen showed my driveway.
Nighttime.
The quality was grainy.
But I recognized it.
My car pulling in.
Me getting out.
Then the audio started.
My own voice.
“Where is she?””
Angry.
Panicked.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“You need to calm down.””
The video ended.
Vanessa looked satisfied.
“That is how he behaves.””
I stared at the screen.
“That proves nothing.””
“Doesn’t it?””
“No.””
I looked at the judge.
“I was terrified because my daughter was gone.””
The judge studied the footage.
Then looked at Vanessa.
“Where was Lily found?””
“In the backyard.””
“Who found her?””
I answered.
“I did.””
The judge looked at Vanessa.
“Why does your evidence only show Mr. Carter arriving?””
Vanessa paused.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Claire noticed.
“So you have no footage of what happened before he arrived?””
Vanessa looked away.
“No.””
“Because you deleted it.””
“I did not.””
“Then where is it?””
Silence.
The judge stared at her.
Vanessa’s confidence weakened.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The first crack.
After the hearing, Claire stopped me outside.
“She’s hiding something.””
“I know.””
“But we need proof.””
I looked at my phone.
“Can we get the original footage?””
“We can try.””
“What if it’s gone?””
Claire looked serious.
“Then we find another source.””
I looked back toward the courthouse.
Vanessa was walking away.
She wasn’t defeated.
Not even close.
She turned around before getting into her car.
And smiled.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
*You’re getting closer. But you still don’t know the worst part.*
I showed Claire.
She frowned.
“Don’t respond.””
“I won’t.””
Another message arrived.
This one had an attachment.
A photo.
I opened it.
And my heart stopped.
It was Lily.
Standing outside the garden shed.
The night she disappeared.
But someone else was in the picture.
Someone standing behind her.
Someone I recognized.
My blood went cold.
May you like
Because the person holding Lily’s hand wasn’t Vanessa.
It was me.
