Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Mask

The next morning, I drove to Rachel’s house.

I didn’t call first.

I couldn’t.

My mind was racing too fast.

Vanessa’s voice kept repeating in my head.

“I married him because of his daughter.””

What did that mean?

Why Lily?

Why my daughter?

Rachel opened the door before I knocked.

The second she saw my face, she knew.

“You listened.””

I nodded.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

My anger rose.

“You knew she married me because of Lily?””

Rachel stepped back.

“Come inside.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need answers.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was hoping you’d never have to hear it this way.””

“Then tell me the right way.””

She was silent.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“Vanessa had a daughter before Mason.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She was six years old.””

My heart sank.

“What happened?””

Rachel’s face turned pale.

“She died.””

I stared at her.

“How?””

“She was sick.””

“That doesn’t explain why Vanessa wanted Lily.””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because Lily reminded her of that child.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She became obsessed.””

The word made my stomach turn.

“Obsessed?””

“She would talk about replacing what she lost.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“She didn’t see Lily as a child.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did she see?””

Rachel whispered:

“A second chance.””

I looked away.

A second chance.

That sounded almost harmless.

Until I remembered the locked pantry.

The hunger.

The fear.

The things Mason revealed.

“How did she meet me?””

Rachel sat down.

“She researched you.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She knew you were a single father.””

My chest tightened.

“She knew about Lily before we met?””

Rachel nodded.

“She knew everything.””

I felt sick.

“Where did she find that information?””

“I don’t know.””

I walked around the room.

My entire marriage suddenly felt like a carefully built trap.

“She planned this.””

“Yes.””

“From the beginning?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I covered my face with my hands.

“How could I not see it?””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“Because she wanted you to see what she showed you.””

The sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

Vanessa showed me kindness.

Patience.

Warmth.

She showed me exactly what I needed.

And I never questioned it.

My phone rang.

It was Mason.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His breathing was fast.

“Dad, come home.””

“What happened?””

“She’s gone through my room.””

My heart jumped.

“Who?””

“Mom.””

“What did she take?””

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed my keys.

“I’m coming.””

When I arrived home, Mason was standing outside.

The front door was open.

“What happened?””

He handed me an envelope.

“She left this on my bed.””

I opened it.

Inside was a printed document.

At the top were the words:

*Temporary Custody Petition.*

My hands went cold.

“She’s trying to take Lily?””

Mason shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She’s trying to take me.””

I read further.

Vanessa had written claims about my parenting.

Claims about my work schedule.

Claims about my “unstable behavior.””

And then I saw the final sentence.

“She is accusing me of abuse.””

Mason’s eyes widened.

“She’s saying you hurt Lily?””

I couldn’t speak.

Vanessa was turning everything upside down.

She was building a story.

A story where she was the victim.

And I was the monster.

Then my phone received a message.

From Vanessa.

One sentence.

*You wanted the truth, Michael. Now everyone will see theirs.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

This one had an attachment.

A video.

I opened it.

The first image made my heart stop.

It was me.

Holding Lily.

The night I came home.

The night I slapped Vanessa.

The video had been edited.

Carefully.

My words were cut.

My actions were isolated.

And it ended with a title:

*A Father Who Lost Control.*

I dropped the phone.

Because Vanessa wasn’t just defending herself.

She was preparing to destroy me.

And then Mason whispered the words that made me realize she had planned this far longer than I imagined.

“Dad…”

I looked at him.

“She didn’t make that video yesterday.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Mason swallowed.

“She made it months ago.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

May you like

He looked toward the house.

“Because she was waiting for the right moment to use it.””
