Chapter 4: Rachel’s Warning

I didn’t speak for several seconds.

The phone felt heavy against my ear.

My eyes stayed locked on Vanessa.

She was standing across the kitchen, watching me with a face that no longer looked angry.

It looked terrified.

“Rachel,” I said slowly, “what are you talking about?””

The woman on the other end sighed.

“I should have told someone years ago.””

My hand tightened around Lily.

“Tell me now.””

“Not over the phone.””

I glanced at Vanessa.

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa knows I contacted you, she’ll destroy every piece of evidence.””

My stomach twisted.

Evidence.

That word stayed in my head.

“Rachel, what happened?””

There was a pause.

Then she said quietly, “Mason was eight when I started working for Vanessa.””

I looked at my stepson.

He was still in the driveway, sitting in his car.

He had no idea.

“She told everyone he was a difficult child,” Rachel continued.

“She said he was spoiled. Disrespectful. Manipulative.””

My jaw tightened.

“She said the same things about Lily.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because she always uses the same words.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Rachel,” I said, “what did she do to him?””

The woman hesitated.

“She isolated him.””

My chest tightened.

“She would tell him nobody wanted him. She would say his father only stayed because he felt obligated.””

My blood ran cold.

Exactly what Mason told me.

“She made him believe he was a burden,” Rachel continued.

I closed my eyes.

A memory flashed through my mind.

Mason sitting quietly at family dinners.

Mason apologizing every time he asked for something.

Mason saying, “It’s okay, I don’t need it.””

I had always thought he was just a shy teenager.

I never realized he was a scared one.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked.

Rachel’s voice cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“What could she do?””

“She knew things about my family. Things she threatened to expose.””

I looked at Vanessa again.

The woman I married.

The woman I trusted.

“Where can I meet you?””

Rachel gave me an address.

“Come alone.””

I hesitated.

“I can’t leave Lily.””

“Bring her if you need to.””

I looked down at my daughter.

She was still holding onto my shirt.

“I’ll be there.””

I ended the call.

The kitchen stayed silent.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“You’re going to believe some stranger?””

I looked at her.

“She knew about Mason.””

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

“You know who she is.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She was unstable.””

“Then why are you scared?””

“I’m not.””

“Your face says otherwise.””

She stepped closer.

“Michael, you don’t know what you’re doing.””

“No,” I said.

“I finally do.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You think leaving me solves everything?””

“I think protecting my daughter is the only thing that matters right now.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’ll regret this.””

The way she said it wasn’t a warning.

It was a promise.

Two hours later, I sat across from Rachel in a quiet coffee shop on the other side of town.

She looked older than I expected.

Tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret too heavy for too long.

She placed a folder on the table.

“I kept copies.””

I looked at it.

“What is this?””

“Notes. Dates. Messages.””

I opened the folder.

The first page had Mason’s name.

My hands shook.

“Why?””

“Because I knew someday someone would need proof.””

I looked up.

“Proof of what?””

Rachel stared at me.

“That Vanessa doesn’t lose control.””

She leaned closer.

“She plans.””

A chill moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

“She knows exactly what she’s doing.””

I flipped through the pages.

There were dates.

Times.

Descriptions.

Mason’s behavior.

Things he said.

Things Vanessa said.

“She documented him like he was the problem,” Rachel said.

“Every mistake. Every tear. Every time he got upset.””

My throat tightened.

“And nobody questioned her?””

“She was good at making people believe her.””

Rachel looked out the window.

“She’s charming when she needs something.””

That sentence hurt because I knew it was true.

I had fallen for the same thing.

“What about Lily?””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“That’s why I called you.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa has started repeating the pattern.””

I froze.

“What pattern?””

Rachel opened another page.

“This started three months ago.””

I read the notes.

Food restrictions.

Isolation.

Threats.

My stomach turned.

Three months.

Three months my daughter had been suffering.

Three months I thought everything was fine.

Rachel reached into her bag.

“I have one more thing.””

She pulled out a small USB drive.

“What is it?””

“A recording.””

“Of what?””

Her eyes met mine.

“The night before you came home.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened that night?””

Rachel pushed the USB toward me.

“Listen to it.””

I picked it up.

“What will I hear?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“You’ll hear Vanessa telling someone why she married you.””

I stared at the tiny piece of plastic in my hand.

“Who was she talking to?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

May you like

She just whispered:

“Someone who knows your family.””
