Chapter 9: The Shadow Following Maya
The police officer asked me the same question three times.
“Are you sure nobody else has access to this house?””
And every time, I gave the same answer.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That was the truth.
I didn’t know who had keys.
I didn’t know who had been watching Maya.
I didn’t know which parts of my life were real.
By midnight, officers had checked the property.
No signs of forced entry.
No cameras outside.
No obvious threats.
But the photo remained.
Someone had taken it.
Someone had followed my daughter.
Maya sat wrapped in a blanket on the couch while I stayed beside her.
She hadn’t said much since seeing the picture.
I hated that.
My daughter used to tell me everything.
Now I was learning that silence had become her way of surviving.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up.
“Yeah?””
“You’re not in trouble.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why do you look scared?””
She played with the edge of the blanket.
“Because every time I tell the truth, someone gets upset.””
That sentence broke me.
I looked toward Claire.
She heard it.
And she cried quietly.
Daniel sat across the room, staring at the floor.
Evelyn was gone.
The police had asked her to leave after questioning her.
But before she left, she said something I couldn’t forget.
“Mark, you’re looking for a villain.””
She had looked at Claire.
“But the truth is usually more complicated.””
I hated that she might be right.
Because every person in this house had done something wrong.
But Maya was the only one who had no power.
Later that night, after Maya finally fell asleep, I found Claire sitting alone in the kitchen.
The same place where we used to drink coffee every morning.
Now it felt like a courtroom.
“You should sleep.””
She looked up.
“I don’t deserve to.””
I leaned against the counter.
“I don’t know what you deserve.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked:
“Who took the picture?””
Claire looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
“You’ve been lying for ten years.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
I softened slightly.
Not because I forgave her.
Because I saw how broken she was.
“Then help me understand.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“There was someone else.””
My body went still.
“Someone else involved?””
She nodded.
“After Maya was born.””
“Who?””
Claire hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Rebecca.””
The name again.
“Who is Rebecca?””
“She was my friend.””
“Your friend helped you change records?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“Because she believed I deserved to keep Maya.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t explain the photo.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what does?””
She hesitated.
And I knew.
There was another secret.
“Claire.””
She closed her eyes.
“Rebecca didn’t just help me.””
“What else?””
“She helped someone else too.””
“Who?””
Claire looked toward the stairs where Maya was sleeping.
Then she said:
“Someone who wanted Maya gone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Claire whispered:
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She never told me her real name.””
I stared at her.
“Then how did you know her?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“Because she contacted me after Maya was born.””
“Why?””
“To make a deal.””
I waited.
Claire looked terrified.
“She offered me money.””
“For what?””
“To make sure Maya never found out who her biological family was.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
“Why would anyone pay you to hide a child’s identity?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because Maya wasn’t just connected to Daniel.””
“What does that mean?””
Claire reached into her pocket.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Not the one Evelyn had shown.
A different one.
She placed it on the table.
It showed Daniel holding baby Maya.
But behind him stood another person.
A person whose face had been scratched out.
On the back of the photograph was handwriting.
A name.
A name I had never heard before.
Claire watched me read it.
Then whispered:
“That’s the person who has been trying to erase Maya’s existence.””
I turned the photo over.
My hands went cold.
Because the name written there was:
*Dr. Natalie Reed.*
May you like
And underneath it was a note.
*“If Maya ever learns the truth, she cannot be allowed to speak.””*
