Chapter 10: The Doctor Who Erased a Name
The name on the photograph stayed in my mind all night.
Dr. Natalie Reed.
A person I had never met.
A person who somehow knew my daughter before I did.
A person who wanted Maya silenced.
By sunrise, I had stopped asking whether my life had been a lie.
I was asking how many lies were still waiting to be uncovered.
Maya woke up before anyone else.
I found her sitting at the kitchen table, staring at a bowl of cereal she hadn’t touched.
“You okay?””
She looked up.
“Are you going to leave?””
The question hit me harder than anything Claire had confessed.
I pulled out the chair and sat beside her.
“No.””
“But everything is different now.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“I’m different too.””
I shook my head.
“No, Maya. The people around you hid things. That doesn’t change who you are.””
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she whispered:
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Do you still want me?””
I felt my chest tighten.
I reached across the table and held her hand.
“I have wanted you since the first moment I held you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I was scared you’d pick the truth over me.””
I wiped her tear.
“The truth matters.””
I paused.
“But you matter more.””
From the doorway, Claire watched us.
For once, she didn’t interrupt.
She just cried.
Later that morning, Daniel arrived with more documents.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept either.
“I found something about Natalie.””
I looked at the folder in his hand.
“Dr. Natalie Reed?””
He nodded.
“Maya’s doctor after she was born.””
I froze.
“She was her doctor?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
Because somehow, every answer still came back to her.
Claire spoke quietly.
“She wasn’t supposed to be involved.””
I turned.
“What does that mean?””
Claire sat down.
“When Maya got sick, Natalie was the specialist assigned to her case.””
“And?””
“She became interested in the situation.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Too interested.””
I looked at him.
“You know her?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“She worked with my family.””
The room went silent.
“What kind of work?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Financial and medical consulting.””
“That’s vague.””
“Because it’s complicated.””
I hated that word.
Complicated.
Everyone used it when the truth was ugly.
Daniel continued.
“My mother trusted Natalie.””
Evelyn.
The name made me tense.
“So Evelyn knew her too?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Claire.
“And you?””
Claire nodded.
“I met her through Evelyn.””
I stared at the three people sitting in my kitchen.
Everyone knew someone.
Everyone had history.
Everyone except me.
“What did Natalie want?””
Daniel pulled out a document.
“It started with Maya’s medical records.””
I read the page.
My eyes stopped.
There were changes.
Dates altered.
Names removed.
Information deleted.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Natalie believed Maya’s identity needed to disappear.””
“Why would a doctor do that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire whispered:
“Because Natalie knew something about Maya’s birth.””
“What?””
Claire looked terrified.
“She knew Maya was connected to something bigger.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Bigger than what?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“My family.””
I stared at him.
“What does your family have to do with this?””
He took a deep breath.
“My father owned a company that was involved in illegal medical research.””
The room went silent.
Maya was upstairs.
I lowered my voice.
“Illegal?””
Daniel nodded.
“Natalie was part of it.””
My stomach turned.
“What kind of research?””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Genetic studies.””
The word felt unreal.
“You’re saying someone wanted Maya hidden because of DNA?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Claire.
“Is that why you hid the test?””
Claire started crying.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew enough.””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Enough to let me raise a child while everyone around her knew something I didn’t.””
Claire looked broken.
“I was trying to protect her.””
I looked at the photograph again.
The scratched-out face.
The warning.
The threat.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
“Mark Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“I think we need to talk.””
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You already know.””
My grip tightened.
“Natalie?””
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
“What do you want?””
Her voice lowered.
“I want you to stop searching.””
I looked around the room.
“No.””
“You don’t understand what you’re uncovering.””
“I understand that someone has been threatening my daughter.””
A quiet sigh.
Then she said:
“I’m not threatening Maya.””
“Then what are you doing?””
“I’m warning you.””
“About what?””
Another pause.
Then:
“About the person inside your house who has been lying to you the longest.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
The call ended.
And on the screen appeared a message.
A photo.
