Chapter 12: The Betrayal Nobody Expected

Nobody spoke after the message appeared.

Not because we didn’t have questions.

Because we had too many.

The kind of questions that changed everything.

Who had been inside my house?

Who wanted me to find the evidence?

And why did they want me to suspect everyone?

I closed the laptop.

“We need to stop accusing each other.””

Claire looked surprised.

After everything she had done, she looked surprised.

But I continued.

“Someone is playing all of us.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He’s right.””

I looked at him.

“You know something?””

He hesitated.

That was becoming a pattern.

“I know my family has enemies.””

“Enemies connected to Natalie?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn’s old documents.

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

Nobody knew anything.

But somehow, everyone knew enough to keep secrets.

The police returned that afternoon after reviewing the evidence.

They confirmed someone had accessed the hidden container recently.

But there were no fingerprints.

No cameras.

No obvious entry.

Whoever had done it knew what they were doing.

The officer looked at me.

“Mr. Bennett, is there anyone you believe would want to harm your daughter?””

I looked at Claire.

At Daniel.

At the empty doorway where Evelyn had stood.

I hated my answer.

“I don’t know.””

That night, I sat beside Maya while she drew.

She had always drawn when she was scared.

“What are you making?””

She covered the paper.

“Nothing.””

I smiled slightly.

“You know I used to do that too.””

She looked at me.

“When?””

“When I was your age.””

She smiled for the first time in days.

Then she handed me the paper.

It was a picture of our family.

Me.

Her.

Claire.

And Daniel.

Four people.

Not because she understood everything.

Because she was trying to imagine a world where everyone stopped hurting each other.

“You’re still my dad,” she said.

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Even if everything changes?””

“Especially then.””

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“I remember Natalie.””

I froze.

“What?””

Maya looked scared.

“From when I was little.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

She closed her eyes.

“I remember her voice.””

I sat closer.

“What did she say?””

Maya whispered:

“She told Mom I was an experiment.””

The room went silent.

I felt anger rise.

“What else?””

“She said I was special.””

“Why?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then she looked at me.

“But she said something else.””

“What?””

Maya’s voice trembled.

“She said my blood could change everything.””

I felt sick.

That night, I searched through every document we had.

And I found something hidden inside the DNA report.

A note.

Not from Claire.

Not from Natalie.

From someone else.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

It said:

*“The child is not the only subject.””*

I stared at the words.

Then I noticed a second line.

*“Mark Bennett was selected too.””*

My hands went cold.

Selected?

For what?

I woke Claire immediately.

She read the note.

And the color disappeared from her face.

“You knew.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Mark…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No more.””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know the details.””

“But you knew I was involved.””

She nodded.

“How?””

Claire whispered:

“Because Natalie chose you.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

She looked at Maya’s bedroom door.

Then back at me.

“Because you weren’t supposed to just raise Maya.””

I waited.

Claire’s voice dropped.

“You were part of the study.””

The room went completely silent.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the clock.

Not the rain outside.

Nothing.

“What study?””

Claire looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“The one that started before Maya was born.””

I stared at her.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered if the biggest secret wasn’t what happened to my daughter.

It was why I was chosen to become her father.
