Chapter 13: The Father Who Was Chosen

I spent the entire night staring at the ceiling.

Not sleeping.

Not thinking.

Just trying to understand a sentence that had changed everything.

*You were part of the study.*

The words kept repeating in my mind.

Not Maya.

Not Claire.

Me.

For years, I thought I had been the person who rescued my family from chaos.

Now I was wondering if I had been placed there intentionally.

When the sun came up, I was still sitting in the same chair beside Maya’s bedroom door.

Claire found me there.

She looked exhausted.

Like she hadn’t slept either.

“Mark.””

I didn’t look at her.

“How long?””

She stopped.

“What?””

“How long did you know there was something about me?””

Silence.

That was her answer.

I finally turned.

“How long?””

Claire sat across from me.

“Since before we got married.””

The pain of hearing it was different from all the other lies.

Because this one meant our entire relationship started with something hidden.

“You knew me before you loved me.””

She looked hurt.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

She shook her head.

“I met you because of Maya.””

“But you stayed because?””

“Because I fell in love with you.””

I wanted to believe that.

I really did.

But trust was like glass.

Once broken, even the pieces could cut you.

“Tell me everything.””

Claire looked down.

“When Maya was born, Natalie was studying genetic patterns connected to Daniel’s family.””

“And me?””

“She discovered something.””

“What?””

Claire swallowed.

“You had a rare genetic compatibility.””

I stared at her.

“That sounds insane.””

“I know.””

“You’re saying some doctor looked at me and decided I was useful?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Which meant yes.

I stood.

“I’m not a science experiment.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice rose.

“You all keep saying you know. You knew. You were protecting me.

You were helping me. But nobody ever asked me.””

Claire started crying.

“You’re right.””

That was the first time she said it without trying to explain.

Without defending herself.

“You’re right, Mark.””

The honesty hurt more.

Later that morning, Daniel arrived with Evelyn.

I almost didn’t let them in.

But I needed answers.

Evelyn carried a folder.

“I owe you the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone says that right before another secret.””

She accepted the criticism.

“I deserve that.””

That surprised me.

Evelyn sat down.

“When Maya was born, Natalie believed children from certain genetic backgrounds could have unusual responses to medical treatments.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And his family?””

“My family funded her research.””

I felt sick.

“And you?””

Evelyn looked away.

“I helped.””

The confession landed heavily.

“You helped someone experiment on children?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I helped fund medical research. I did not know what Natalie was doing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“But you suspected.””

Evelyn went quiet.

That was enough.

I opened the folder.

Inside were records.

Not just Maya’s.

Mine.

My name appeared over and over.

Dates.

Blood tests.

Medical evaluations.

I looked up.

“When did this happen?””

Evelyn answered softly.

“Before you met Claire.””

I flipped through the pages.

I had no memory of any of it.

“No.””

Claire looked at me.

“What?””

“I would remember.””

Daniel frowned.

“Remember what?””

I pointed at the records.

“These appointments.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn said:

“You were unconscious.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You were in an accident ten years ago.””

I froze.

A memory surfaced.

A car crash.

Rain.

Headlights.

Then nothing.

I had always been told I was lucky.

A minor accident.

A concussion.

A few hospital visits.

But now…

“What did Natalie do?””

Evelyn looked at Claire.

Claire whispered:

“She used the opportunity.””

My hands tightened.

“She experimented on me.””

Nobody denied it.

I felt something break inside me.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

The realization that my own body had been used without my permission.

That someone had taken my life and treated it like data.

“Where is Natalie now?””

Daniel looked nervous.

“She disappeared.””

“When?””

“After the hospital discovered irregularities.””

I looked at Maya’s drawings on the table.

My daughter.

The reason all of this started.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Natalie.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*“You finally know the truth, Mark. But you still don’t know why you survived.””*

Then a second message arrived.

A location.

And a photo.

A photo of a hospital room.

My hospital room.

From ten years ago.

May you like

And standing beside my unconscious body was Claire.

Holding a folder.
