Chapter 8: The Secret Claire Buried

The house felt like it was shrinking.

Every answer created another question.

Every secret opened a deeper one.

I looked at Claire.

“What does Maya have?””

Claire didn’t speak.

Evelyn did.

“A document.””

I turned toward her.

“What document?””

Claire immediately stood.

“Don’t.””

Evelyn ignored her.

“The truth about what happened the night Maya was born.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Mother, what are you talking about?””

Evelyn stared at him.

“You never knew everything either.””

That sentence changed the room.

Daniel looked hurt.

“You’re saying you hid things from me too?””

Evelyn looked away.

“I was protecting you.””

Nobody believed that anymore.

Not after everything.

I sat at the kitchen table.

“Start from the beginning.””

Claire sat across from me.

Her hands were shaking.

“When Maya was born, Daniel and I were together.””

Maya looked at the floor.

I hated that she had to hear this.

Claire continued.

“Evelyn found out.””

Daniel frowned.

“I told you she didn’t know.””

“She did.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I knew.””

Claire continued.

“You threatened to take Maya.””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Because I thought my son was too young and irresponsible.””

“And Claire?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“I thought Claire was unstable.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So everyone was fighting over a baby, and nobody thought about the baby.””

The silence afterward hurt.

Because nobody could argue.

Claire looked down.

“You’re right.””

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

“When Maya got sick after birth, everything became worse.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What happened?””

Claire swallowed.

“She needed surgery.””

I looked at Maya.

She was listening quietly.

“She was only days old.””

Claire continued.

“I was terrified.””

“And Evelyn?””

“She tried to take control.””

Evelyn interrupted.

“Because you disappeared.””

I looked at Claire.

“Did you?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because I thought if Evelyn got custody, I would never see Maya again.””

Daniel stood.

“You took my daughter and disappeared?””

Claire cried.

“I was scared.””

“That doesn’t make it right.””

“I know.””

I looked at Maya.

“Where did I fit into this?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“You were Maya’s pediatric nurse.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“That’s how I met you.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor moved.

“You told me we met at the coffee shop.””

“I lied.””

Another lie.

Another piece of my life rewritten.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at Maya.

“Because you saved her.””

I couldn’t speak.

“When Maya got sick, you were the person who stayed with her during the hardest night.””

I remembered my first job at the hospital.

The tiny baby with the frightened mother.

The child I never forgot.

But I never knew it was Maya.

Claire wiped her tears.

“When I saw you years later, I knew you were the one person who loved her without wanting anything.””

The words should have comforted me.

Instead, they hurt.

“Then why lie?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“Of losing her.””

Evelyn laughed quietly.

“You didn’t protect her.””

Claire looked at her.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I do.””

Evelyn pulled out another folder.

She placed it on the table.

Inside was a legal document.

I opened it.

My eyes stopped on one line.

*Emergency guardianship petition.*

The child listed:

Maya Foster.

The petitioner:

Evelyn Foster.

But the date was from ten years ago.

I looked up.

“She tried this before?””

Claire nodded.

“She almost succeeded.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because I stopped it.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

Claire’s face changed.

And I knew the answer would hurt.

“I made a deal.””

“With who?””

She looked at Evelyn.

“With her.””

The room went silent.

“What deal?””

Claire looked at Maya.

“I agreed to disappear from Daniel’s life.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Claire whispered:

“In exchange, Evelyn promised she would never come after Maya again.””

Daniel looked furious.

“And you thought lying to me was the solution?””

Claire cried.

“I thought I was keeping her safe.””

Then Maya spoke.

Small.

Broken.

“But why did you make me feel like I couldn’t tell Dad anything?””

Claire froze.

The question hit harder than any accusation.

“I don’t know.””

Maya looked away.

And for the first time, Claire looked ashamed.

Not afraid.

Ashamed.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From the same unknown number.

This time there was a photo attached.

I opened it.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Maya at school.

Taken that morning.

Someone had been watching her.

The message underneath said:

*“You should have listened to Claire. Some secrets stay buried for a reason.””*

I looked at the screen.

Then at the window.

And realized something terrifying.

May you like

The person threatening us wasn’t Evelyn.

Because Evelyn was standing right there.
