Chapter 11: The Evidence Under Maya’s Bed
I don’t remember running upstairs.
I only remember the sound of my own footsteps.
The fear in my chest.
The image on my phone.
Someone had photographed my daughter while she slept.
That was no longer a family secret.
That was a threat.
I pushed open Maya’s bedroom door.
She was sitting up.
Confused.
“Dad?””
I immediately checked the windows.
The closet.
Under the bed.
Every corner.
“Dad, what are you doing?””
I stopped.
Because I realized something.
I was searching her room like a stranger had been inside.
And I hated that I didn’t know if they had.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””
She looked scared.
“Is someone coming?””
I sat beside her.
“No.””
It was a lie.
A small one.
But still a lie.
And I hated myself for saying it.
“I just want to make sure you’re safe.””
She nodded.
Then looked at the floor.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Mom used to check under my bed.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Not like normal.””
“What do you mean?””
“She would look for something.””
I felt cold.
“What something?””
Maya shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked around the room.
Then slowly moved toward the bed.
Underneath were old toys.
Books.
A box of drawings.
Nothing unusual.
Then I noticed the floorboard.
One section was slightly raised.
“Maya?””
She stood.
“What?””
“Did you know this was here?””
She shook her head.
I lifted the board carefully.
Underneath was a small metal container.
My hands went numb.
Because this wasn’t hidden by a child.
This was hidden by an adult.
I brought it downstairs.
Everyone gathered around.
Claire looked at the container.
And immediately whispered:
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know this?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
And a small flash drive.
The first paper was a medical report.
Maya Foster.
Birth date.
Then a note attached.
*Subject approved for continued observation.*
I felt sick.
“Observation?””
Daniel took the paper.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He looked at Claire.
“What did you do?””
Claire stepped back.
“I didn’t.””
“You knew about this.””
“I knew Natalie kept records.””
“You let this happen?””
Claire started crying.
“I was trying to get away from her.””
I grabbed the next paper.
It was a contract.
Between Natalie Reed and an organization.
The signature at the bottom made my blood run cold.
Evelyn Foster.
I looked at Daniel.
“Your mother signed this?””
He looked devastated.
“I didn’t know.””
The room exploded.
Years of secrets.
Years of people making choices about Maya without Maya knowing.
I picked up the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
Nobody answered.
I connected it to my laptop.
A video file appeared.
Recorded ten years earlier.
I clicked play.
The screen showed a hospital room.
A newborn baby.
Maya.
And two women standing beside her.
Natalie.
And Claire.
My breath stopped.
Natalie’s voice came first.
“You understand what happens if anyone finds out.””
Claire looked younger.
Terrified.
“I can’t do this.””
“You already agreed.””
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
Natalie stepped closer.
“You wanted custody.””
“I wanted my daughter safe.””
Natalie smiled.
“Safety requires sacrifice.””
The video shook.
Then Claire whispered:
“What if Mark finds out?””
Natalie answered:
“Then he loses her.””
I stopped the video.
The room was silent.
I looked at Claire.
“You knew.””
She covered her face.
“I knew she was dangerous.””
“And you still let her near Maya?””
“I thought I could control it.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You thought you could control someone who was willing to erase a child?””
Claire cried.
“I was trying to undo it.””
“Then why hide the evidence?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””
I stared at the woman I married.
Then Daniel spoke.
“There’s more.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed at the laptop.
“The video file date.””
I checked.
My blood turned cold.
The recording wasn’t from ten years ago.
It was from yesterday.
Someone had accessed the file recently.
Someone had been inside the house.
Before I could speak, the laptop screen flickered.
A new message appeared.
No sender.
Just text.
*“You found the evidence. Now find the person who gave it to you.””*
May you like
Then another line appeared.
*“Because they’re closer than you think.””*
