Chapter 9: The Family Secret

The name hung in the air.

Your grandfather.

I felt like I was hearing about a stranger.

But I knew my grandfather.

At least, I knew the version my mother told me.

A successful businessman.

A strict man.

A man who believed family reputation mattered more than feelings.

He died when I was eight.

I barely remembered him.

“What does my grandfather have to do with this?””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“He knew about Marcus.””

Marcus frowned.

“He knew me?””

Rachel nodded.

“He never approved of you.””

A bitter laugh escaped Marcus.

“Of course.””

“He believed Claire was ruining her future.””

I looked at her.

“What future?””

Rachel hesitated.

“The family business.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s why?””

“No.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because Marcus was not wealthy.””

I stared.

“So my grandfather cared about money?””

Rachel looked down.

“He cared about control.””

Darius nodded slowly.

“Claire spent her whole life trying to escape him.””

I looked at him.

“You knew this too?””

“Yes.””

My frustration returned.

“Everyone knew.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone had pieces of my life except me.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

Rachel continued.

“Your grandfather found out Claire had you.””

“And?””

“He demanded she give you up.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Marcus looked shocked.

“He wanted her to abandon her own daughter?””

Rachel nodded.

“He told her a child would destroy her reputation.””

My hands curled into fists.

“That’s disgusting.””

“Yes.””

Rachel’s voice was quiet.

“It was.””

I looked at Darius.

“And the papers?””

He nodded.

“Your grandfather threatened to take you away.””

“How?””

“He had money. Lawyers. Connections.””

The room felt colder.

“Claire was terrified.””

Marcus whispered:

“So she asked Darius to protect her.””

“Yes.””

Rachel looked at me.

“She knew Darius would never hurt you.””

I looked at him.

And suddenly, I saw something differently.

Not a man who stole my father’s place.

A man who stood between me and someone powerful.

But there was still one question.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Darius answered.

“Because Claire made us promise.””

I looked at him.

“She made you promise to hide my entire life?””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“She made us promise to let you decide when you were ready.””

I shook my head.

“I was ready years ago.””

Darius looked devastated.

“I know.””

The honesty hurt.

Before I could respond, Marcus stepped closer.

“I need to ask something.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at Darius.

“Did you ever try to find me?””

Darius went silent.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

My eyes widened.

“When?””

“Several times.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Darius looked at Marcus.

“Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

The room changed.

“What do you mean?””

Darius looked at her.

“Rachel knows.””

Marcus turned.

“Rachel?””

She looked broken.

“I intercepted the letters.””

Nobody moved.

“You what?””

Rachel started crying.

“I thought I was protecting Claire.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You destroyed our family.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice shook.

“You don’t know what it feels like to miss a child who is alive.””

Rachel lowered her head.

“I know.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

I had never seen him before.

But Rachel immediately went pale.

“No.””

Darius stood.

“Who is that?””

Rachel whispered:

“The person I told you about.””

The man looked directly at me.

Then smiled.

Not warmly.

Like he already knew me.

“Emily.””

My stomach dropped.

“How do you know my name?””

He stepped inside.

“Because I’ve been watching you your entire life.””

Marcus moved in front of me.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored him.

He looked at Darius.

“You should have kept the secret buried.””

Darius’s face changed.

“You.””

The man smiled.

“Yes.””

Then he said the words that made everyone freeze.

“I was there the night Emily was born.””

May you like

He paused.

“And I was the one who made sure Marcus never found her.””
