Chapter 13: The Video My Mother Left Behind

I stared at the screen.

My mother’s name.

A video.

A message from someone who had been gone for years.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It felt like the entire room was waiting for me to press play.

“Emily,” Darius said softly.

I looked at him.

“What if this is another secret?””

His face broke slightly.

“Then you deserve to know it.””

That was the answer I needed.

Not protection.

Not silence.

The truth.

I pressed play.

The screen went black for a few seconds.

Then my mother appeared.

Older than the photos I remembered.

Tired.

But smiling.

My chest tightened.

“Hi, Emily.””

Her voice.

I covered my mouth.

It had been years since I heard it.

“I don’t know when you’ll see this,” she continued.

“Maybe you’ll be angry. Maybe you’ll never forgive me.””

Tears filled my eyes.

Behind the camera was a hospital room.

She looked fragile.

But determined.

“I need you to understand something first.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“You were never unwanted.””

I broke.

That was the sentence I had spent my whole life needing to hear.

Not from Marcus.

Not from Darius.

From her.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””

The video continued.

“When I found out I was pregnant, I was terrified. Your grandfather wanted me to make choices based on reputation. Marcus wanted to stay, but we were young and scared.””

A small smile appeared on her face.

“But then you were born.””

She looked down.

“And everything changed.””

I glanced at Marcus.

He was crying silently.

No shame.

No hiding.

Just grief.

My mother continued.

“Marcus, if you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””

Marcus froze.

“He loved you, Emily. He never stopped.””

His hand covered his mouth.

“I know he made mistakes. I know he wasn’t perfect. But he wanted to be your father.””

The words seemed to heal something inside him.

Then my mother looked toward the camera again.

“And Darius…”

Darius straightened.

My mother smiled.

“Thank you.””

His eyes closed.

“I know you’ll blame yourself. I know you’ll think you failed because you couldn’t fix everything.””

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“But you gave Emily something I never thought she would have.””

She paused.

“A safe place.””

The room was silent.

“He didn’t replace you, Marcus.””

My mother’s voice became softer.

“And Marcus didn’t erase you, Darius.””

She looked between two people who weren’t physically there.

“You both loved my daughter in different ways.””

I wiped my face.

Then her expression changed.

Serious.

“There is one more thing.””

Everyone became still.

“Victor was not the only person responsible.””

My heart dropped.

I looked at Rachel.

She looked terrified.

My mother continued.

“There was someone else helping him.””

A pause.

“Someone close to me.””

The video shook slightly.

Like she had moved.

“I found documents proving what they did. I was going to expose everything.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I was afraid.””

Darius whispered:

“Claire…”

My mother continued.

“If something happens to me, I need Emily to know the truth.””

The screen flickered.

Then she said:

“The person who helped Victor was—”

The video froze.

A loading symbol appeared.

Everyone stared.

“No,” Marcus whispered.

I tried again.

Nothing.

The file ended.

“That’s impossible.””

Darius grabbed the phone.

“It was cut.””

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel suddenly stood.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You know who helped him.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I thought I did.””

My voice hardened.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“I need the truth.””

She nodded.

“The person who helped Victor…”

Her voice broke.

“Was Claire’s best friend.””

I frowned.

“My mother’s friend?””

Rachel nodded.

“Her name was Laura.””

Marcus looked confused.

“I don’t remember a Laura.””

“You wouldn’t.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because she made sure you never met.””

The room became colder.

“How?””

Rachel looked at the phone.

“Because Laura was the one who delivered the message that you were dead.””

Marcus went still.

“She lied to me?””

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

Another person.

Another lie.

Another stolen piece of my life.

“Where is she now?””

Rachel hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“She’s been working with Victor for years.””

Darius stepped forward.

“Where?””

Rachel swallowed.

Then said:

“She’s outside.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

A shadow moved behind the window.

My blood ran cold.

Rachel whispered:

“She followed me here.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The house disappeared into darkness.

Then we heard the front door open.

A woman’s voice echoed through the room.

“Emily.””

I couldn’t move.

Because I recognized the voice.

Even after all these years.

My mother’s closest friend.

The woman who supposedly brought the worst news of my life.

Laura.

May you like

And she said:

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
