Chapter 17: The Father Who Was Framed

The room exploded into silence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The name on the paper felt impossible.

Marcus Hale.

My biological father.

The man who spent twenty-one years believing he lost me.

The man I had spent my whole life waiting for.

“No.””

Marcus whispered it before anyone else could.

“No.””

He stepped back.

“That’s not possible.””

I looked at Darius.

“Explain.””

His face was filled with pain.

“I don’t know if it’s true.””

“Then why is his name there?””

Darius looked at the paper.

“Because that’s what I found.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You think I hurt Claire?””

“No.””

Darius’s answer was immediate.

But that didn’t make the question disappear.

“Then why?””

Darius looked at Victor.

“Because someone wanted us to believe it.””

Victor smiled.

“Finally.””

Everyone turned.

He looked almost relieved.

“You’re all beginning to understand.””

I felt anger rise.

“You knew.””

Victor didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You created this.””

He looked at me.

“I created order.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You created pain.””

Marcus grabbed the paper.

He read it carefully.

“This signature…”

He stopped.

“What?””

He looked pale.

“This isn’t mine.””

Darius looked up.

“I know.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Darius pointed at the bottom.

“The signature was copied.””

Marcus stared.

Someone had forged his name.

Another lie.

Another person framed.

I felt exhausted.

How many times could the truth break before there was nothing left?

Laura stepped forward.

“Victor did this.””

Victor laughed.

“You have no proof.””

Rachel suddenly spoke.

“I do.””

Everyone looked at her.

She walked toward the table.

“I saw him.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Rachel continued.

“The night Claire died.””

My heart raced.

“You were there?””

Rachel nodded.

“I followed Victor.””

“Why?””

“Because I finally realized he was going too far.””

She looked ashamed.

“I had spent years helping him hide things. But when Claire found out about the money, I knew he would destroy her.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You watched?””

Rachel cried.

“Yes.””

The confession was heavy.

“I saw Victor enter the house.””

Darius looked at her.

“Why didn’t you stop him?””

Rachel looked broken.

“Because I was afraid.””

Again.

That word.

The word that had destroyed everything.

“I heard them arguing.””

“What did they say?””

Rachel looked at Victor.

“He told Claire that Marcus would never know the truth.””

My chest tightened.

“And my mother?””

“She told him she would expose him.””

Rachel swallowed.

“Then I heard something crash.””

The room went quiet.

“What happened?””

“I ran inside.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Claire was on the floor.””

Darius looked away.

“Victor was holding a bottle of medicine.””

Everyone froze.

Victor immediately stepped forward.

“She’s lying.””

Rachel looked at him.

“I wish I was.””

The front door suddenly opened.

A police officer stood outside.

Everyone turned.

“Emily Carter?””

My heart stopped.

“Yes?””

The officer held up a folder.

“I’m Detective Miller.””

He looked at the room.

“We received evidence regarding the death of Claire Carter.””

Victor’s face changed.

The detective continued.

“We need everyone here to remain available for questioning.””

Victor laughed.

“This is absurd.””

The detective ignored him.

Then he looked at me.

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

He handed me a sealed envelope.

“This was found with the original evidence.””

I looked at the label.

My name.

Emily Carter.

“But it was never delivered.””

My hands shook.

“When was it written?””

The detective checked the file.

“The night your mother died.””

I opened it slowly.

The first line made my heart stop.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then Darius failed to protect the truth.

I looked at Darius.

His face went pale.

I continued reading.

The next sentence destroyed everything I thought I knew.

May you like

The person who hurt me tonight is not Victor.

It is someone you trust.
