Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Secret

I couldn’t stop staring at the photograph.

The handwriting.

The message.

The impossible truth.

Someone had been watching us.

Someone who knew everything.

“Darius,” I said slowly, “tell me who wrote this.””

He didn’t speak.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Darius was always the person with answers.

The person who fixed broken things.

The person who made impossible situations feel manageable.

But now he looked afraid.

“Emily,” Marcus said softly, “there’s something you need to understand.””

I looked at him.

“I think I’ve had enough secrets.””

He nodded.

“You deserve the truth.””

Darius pulled out a chair.

“Sit down.””

I almost laughed.

After everything I had learned, sitting felt impossible.

But my legs were shaking.

So I did.

Darius remained standing.

Like he didn’t feel worthy of taking a seat.

“Your mother wasn’t alone when she made that decision,” he said.

“Who helped her?””

He looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Her sister.””

I frowned.

“My aunt?””

Darius nodded.

“A woman named Rachel.””

I remembered her.

Barely.

Rachel Carter.

My mother’s older sister.

The aunt who moved away when I was little.

The aunt who never came to birthdays.

The aunt my mother always described as “complicated.””

“She knew?”” I whispered.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked angry.

“She was the one who convinced Claire to lie.””

I turned toward him.

“How do you know?””

“Because Rachel admitted it.””

The room became silent.

“When?”” I asked.

Marcus looked away.

“Three months after Claire died.””

My heart stopped.

“My mother died knowing?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“She tried to fix it.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She contacted me.””

“When?””

“The week before she passed.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t I know?””

Marcus looked toward Darius.

And that was when I understood.

There was another missing piece.

Darius sighed.

“She was too sick.””

“No.””

I stood up.

“No, don’t tell me everyone made decisions for me again.””

Nobody spoke.

“I am not a child anymore.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m twenty-one. I deserved the truth.””

Darius nodded sadly.

“You’re right.””

That was the thing about him.

He never defended himself when he knew he was wrong.

He simply accepted the pain.

“I received a letter from Claire,” he said.

My heart pounded.

“What did it say?””

He walked upstairs.

For a few moments, nobody spoke.

When he returned, he held a sealed envelope.

The paper looked old.

Fragile.

“I never opened it.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because Claire asked me not to.””

“She asked you?””

He nodded.

“She said if you ever wanted to know, she wanted you to choose.””

I took the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Emily.

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my breath stop.

My beautiful daughter,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.

I kept reading.

I’m sorry for the choices I made. I was scared. I thought I was protecting you, but fear makes people do terrible things.

My eyes blurred.

I continued.

Marcus loved you. He always did. But Rachel convinced me that he would leave again.

She told me I needed someone stable. Someone who would stay.

I looked at Darius.

The letter continued.

And then Darius came into our lives.

He never asked to replace Marcus. He never tried to erase him. He only loved you.

A tear slipped down my face.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

But there is something I never told anyone.

Something that will explain why Rachel wanted Marcus gone.

I stopped.

My heart raced.

The next sentence was underlined.

Rachel was not protecting me.

She was protecting herself.

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed instantly.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t reply.

The phone continued ringing.

Finally, he answered.

“Hello?””

His expression turned pale.

“Where did you get this number?””

A pause.

Then his eyes lifted toward me.

“Emily…”

“What?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

The color drained from his face.

“She says she has proof.””

“Proof of what?””

May you like

Marcus whispered:

“That Darius knew the truth before you were born.””
