Chapter 18: The Truth Nobody Wanted Me To Find
The letter fell from my hands.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Someone I trusted.
That was the phrase.
Not someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
My mind immediately went to every person in the room.
Darius.
Marcus.
Rachel.
Laura.
Everyone had lied.
Everyone had hidden something.
But only one person could have been close enough.
“Emily,” Darius whispered.
I looked at him.
His eyes were full of fear.
Not fear of being accused.
Fear of losing me.
I picked up the letter.
My mother’s handwriting looked weaker than before.
Emily,
I need you to be careful. The person who helped destroy our family is someone who knows how to make people believe they are saving you.
My heart tightened.
Someone who believes they are saving you.
Darius.
The thought appeared.
Then disappeared.
No.
Not him.
The letter continued.
They will use love as an excuse.
They will say they had no choice.
But love without honesty can become another kind of prison.
I looked at everyone.
My mother knew.
She knew exactly what would happen.
The final paragraph was shorter.
I tried to leave evidence behind. I tried to make sure you would know the truth.
But if I failed…
Trust the person who chose you before they ever had a reason to.
I stopped.
The room went silent.
Because everyone knew who that was.
Darius.
But then I saw something.
A small mark at the bottom.
A note.
Not my mother’s handwriting.
Someone had added something after.
Three words.
*He was there.*
I looked up.
“Who added this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus spoke.
“I did.””
Everyone turned.
My breath stopped.
“You?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“I found the letter years ago.””
The room shattered.
Darius stared at him.
“You had it?””
Marcus nodded.
“I didn’t know what it meant.””
My anger rose.
“You had a letter from my mother and didn’t tell me?””
“I didn’t know if it was real.””
“That’s not your choice to make.””
He looked down.
“You’re right.””
For once, nobody defended themselves.
Nobody gave excuses.
They were all finally admitting what they had done.
I turned toward Darius.
“Who was there that night?””
He didn’t answer.
That terrified me.
“Darius.””
He looked at me.
“I was.””
My heart sank.
“You were there when she died.””
“Yes.””
“You already told me that.””
He nodded.
“But I didn’t tell you everything.””
Of course.
Another missing piece.
“What else?””
His hands shook.
“I wasn’t alone.””
Everyone froze.
“Who was with you?””
Darius looked toward the doorway.
Toward Victor.
“No.””
Victor stepped back.
“No.””
Darius continued.
“The person who arrived before me…”
He stopped.
“Was Victor.””
The room changed.
Everyone looked at him.
“He was there?””
Darius nodded.
“Yes.””
Victor laughed.
“You’re lying.””
Darius shook his head.
“I saw you.””
The detective stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, this is important.””
Victor ignored him.
“You’re blaming me because you need someone to blame.””
“No.””
Darius looked at him.
“I’m blaming you because Claire told me.””
My heart stopped.
“She told you?””
Darius nodded.
“Before she died.””
He looked at me.
“Her last words were not your name.””
I froze.
“What were they?””
Darius closed his eyes.
“She said…”
He swallowed.
“‘It wasn’t him.’”
The room went silent.
“Who wasn’t him?””
Darius looked at Marcus.
“She was talking about your father.””
I stared.
My grandfather.
The man everyone blamed.
The man who was supposed to be behind everything.
Darius continued.
“Claire knew Victor wasn’t acting alone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then who was helping him?””
Nobody answered.
Then Laura slowly raised her hand.
“I know.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her face was full of shame.
“The person who helped Victor…”
She looked at me.
“The person who changed the hospital records.””
A pause.
“The person who helped fake your father’s death.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
Laura closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Your mother.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
Laura looked at me.
“Claire wasn’t just trying to protect you from Victor.””
She shook her head.
“She was protecting you from the truth about what she did before she died.””
The detective stepped closer.
“Everyone needs to stay calm.””
But nobody was calm.
Because the woman whose love had guided my entire life…
Might have been the person who started the lie.
Laura looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Emily…”
She whispered:
May you like
“Your mother was not only a victim.””
“She was the person who made the first choice that changed everything.””
