Chapter 19: The Choice My Mother Made
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
My mother.
The woman whose photograph I kept beside my bed.
The woman whose voice I still searched for in crowded rooms.
The woman who told me I was loved.
She had made the first choice.
“No,” I whispered.
Laura looked devastated.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
My voice grew stronger.
“You’re lying.””
I wanted her to be lying.
I needed her to be lying.
Because I had already lost one version of my family.
I didn’t know if I could lose another.
Darius stepped closer.
“Emily.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
The question hurt him before I even finished saying it.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
His eyes filled.
“I knew Claire was hiding something.””
He swallowed.
“But I didn’t know this.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“Finally.””
Everyone turned toward him.
“You finally understand.””
I looked at him.
“You’re enjoying this.””
His expression changed.
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m watching everyone finally admit they are not innocent.””
The detective stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, you should not say anything further.””
Victor ignored him.
“Your mother was not perfect, Emily.””
My fists tightened.
“Neither were you.””
That silenced him.
Because it was true.
Nobody in that room was innocent.
But that didn’t mean everyone was equally guilty.
Laura sat down.
“I need to tell you what happened.””
I looked at her.
“Everything.””
She nodded.
“The night Emily was born, Claire made a decision.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What decision?””
Laura looked at him.
“She wanted to leave.””
His expression changed.
“Leave with Emily?””
“Yes.””
My heart hurt.
“She wanted you there.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“But she didn’t call me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Laura looked at Darius.
“Because Victor had convinced her Marcus would never be accepted by the family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“He could have known.””
“Yes.””
Laura looked down.
“But Claire was afraid.””
Again.
Fear.
The thing that haunted every person involved.
“She called Darius because she trusted him.””
Darius looked away.
“She asked me to help her disappear.””
I froze.
“Disappear?””
“Yes.””
The detective listened carefully.
“Explain.””
Darius took a breath.
“Claire wanted to leave the city. Start over. Raise Emily somewhere Victor couldn’t control.””
Marcus whispered:
“She was going to take our daughter away.””
Darius looked at him.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“She was going to bring you back.””
Everyone went silent.
“What?””
Darius continued.
“Claire planned to contact you after she was safe.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why didn’t she?””
“Because Victor found out.””
Laura nodded.
“He threatened her.””
I looked at Victor.
“And my mother changed the records?””
Laura shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Laura looked at me.
“Claire didn’t change your records.””
She looked at Victor.
“He did.””
Victor’s face hardened.
“But Claire did something else.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
Laura’s voice became quiet.
“She signed papers saying Marcus had no involvement in your life.””
Marcus looked destroyed.
“She signed that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Laura looked at me.
“Because Victor threatened Darius.””
I looked at Darius.
“What does that mean?””
Darius’s face went pale.
“He threatened to hurt me.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because I was helping Claire.””
I finally understood.
Darius hadn’t hidden the truth because he wanted to replace Marcus.
He hid because he was protecting all of us.
But he still made choices.
Choices that hurt.
Laura continued.
“Claire regretted it immediately.””
She handed me another paper.
“She wrote this afterward.””
I opened it.
Emily,
I made a terrible choice because I thought I could control the damage.
I was wrong.
My hands shook.
I chose silence.
And silence allowed people who did not love you to control your story.
I looked up.
My mother had made mistakes.
Real ones.
Painful ones.
But she had finally tried to fix them.
The letter continued.
If you ever learn the truth, please know this:
Your father Marcus loved you.
Darius protected you.
And I failed both of them by letting fear decide for me.
I cried.
Not because she was innocent.
Because she was human.
Victor suddenly moved toward the door.
The detective blocked him.
“Mr. Carter.””
Victor stopped.
“You think this changes everything?””
He looked at me.
“You think you know the truth?””
Nobody answered.
Victor smiled.
“Ask them about the night Darius found Claire.””
I looked at Darius.
Again.
Always another secret.
“What now?””
Darius closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“There’s one thing I never told you.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“I wasn’t the one who called the ambulance.””
The room went silent.
“Who did?””
Darius looked toward Marcus.
“Your father.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus shook his head.
“I wasn’t there.””
Darius looked at him.
“Yes.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped back.
“I never came back.””
Darius’s voice broke.
“You did.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
“Marcus was there that night.””
I looked at my biological father.
The man who thought he lost me.
May you like
The man who thought he had been erased.
And I realized the final piece of the truth was waiting with him.
