Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
The first thing I did after seeing my forged signature was breathe.
Not cry.
Not scream.
Breathe.
Because panic was exactly what they expected from me.
I stared at the document spread across my kitchen table while the morning sunlight poured through the window like the world had no idea mine had just cracked open.
My name was there.
My handwriting.
Or at least, a frighteningly good imitation.
Someone had copied my signature onto a document I had never touched.
Rachel arrived twenty minutes later.
The moment she saw my face, she knew something had happened.
“What is it?””
I slid the paper across the table.
She read it silently.
Then her expression changed.
“Emily…”
“I know.””
“No, you don’t understand.”” She pointed at the bottom.
“This isn’t just a fake signature.””
I looked closer.
The document was a medical authorization form.
A form that appeared to give Damon permission to make certain decisions regarding our baby’s care.
But the date was wrong.
The signature date was before my last prenatal appointment.
Before I had even discussed delivery plans with my doctor.
“They were preparing something,” Rachel said.
I swallowed.
“But why?””
She looked at me.
“Control.””
The word landed heavily.
I thought about Damon’s behavior over the last few months.
The way he suddenly wanted access to everything.
The way he insisted on handling bills.
The way he said, “You don’t need to stress yourself while you’re pregnant.””
At the time, it sounded loving.
Now it sounded like a cage being built one piece at a time.
My phone buzzed.
Damon.
I stared at his name.
Rachel noticed.
“You’re going to answer?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I need him to believe I still don’t know.””
I pressed accept.
“Hey,” I said.
“Hey, beautiful,” Damon replied.
The sweetness almost made me sick.
“I was just checking on you.””
“I’m okay.””
“Are you sure? You sounded tired yesterday.””
I looked at the forged document.
“I didn’t sleep well.””
There was a pause.
Then his voice softened.
“I hate that you’re going through so much.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
“You’ve been busy lately,” I said.
“Work.””
“Right.””
Another pause.
Then he changed the subject.
“I was thinking maybe we should talk about updating some paperwork before the baby comes.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What kind of paperwork?””
“Nothing serious. Just normal parent stuff.””
“Like what?””
He hesitated.
“Insurance. Medical things. You know.””
I looked at Rachel.
She immediately understood.
“He’s testing you,” she mouthed.
I smiled.
“Damon?””
“Yeah?””
“I trust you.””
The silence that followed was the loudest sound in the room.
“Of course you do,” he finally said.
His relief was obvious.
That was when I knew.
He wasn’t asking because he cared.
He was asking because he wanted confirmation that I was still unaware.
After the call ended, Rachel leaned back.
“You’re playing a dangerous game.””
“I know.””
“You could lose everything.””
I looked toward the nursery.
At the tiny crib.
The blankets folded perfectly.
The room waiting for a baby who had no idea the adults around her were fighting a war.
“I already lost something.””
“What?””
I looked down.
“The person I thought my husband was.””
That afternoon, I went to the doctor’s office.
Not because I had an appointment.
Because I needed answers.
My doctor, Dr. Harris, had known me throughout my pregnancy. She immediately noticed something was wrong.
“Emily, is everything okay?””
I hesitated.
Then I placed the document on her desk.
“Did I sign this?””
She read it carefully.
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“No.””
My heart sank.
“You’re sure?””
“I’m positive.””
She looked uncomfortable.
“This was not processed through our office.””
“Could someone have used my information?””
She folded her hands.
“Emily, you need to be careful.””
The seriousness in her voice made my stomach turn.
“Why?””
“Because whoever created this wasn’t guessing.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they had access to personal details.””
My baby kicked.
A tiny movement.
A reminder.
I wasn’t just fighting for myself anymore.
I was fighting for her.
That evening, I came home earlier than expected.
Damon wasn’t supposed to be home.
But his car was in the driveway.
I stepped inside quietly.
Voices came from the living room.
Damon.
And Claire.
My hand froze on the doorknob.
I heard Claire whisper.
“She knows something.””
Damon answered quickly.
“She doesn’t.””
“She looked at me differently.””
“She’s pregnant, Claire.””
“That’s not what I mean.””
I held my breath.
Then Claire said the one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“We need to speed up the plan before Emily gives birth.””
I stepped backward.
Carefully.
Silently.
Because suddenly I understood.
The affair wasn’t the beginning.
It was only the part they wanted me to discover.

The real betrayal had been happening in the shadows.
And I was about to find out exactly how deep it went.
