Chapter 13: The Night Everyone Stopped Pretending

The darkness lasted only three seconds.

But three seconds was enough.

Enough time for every instinct inside me to wake up.

Enough time to remember every warning.

Every lie.

Every person who had told me I was imagining things.

I grabbed Claire’s arm.

“Don’t move.””

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know he was coming.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t sure I believed her.

The sound downstairs became clearer.

A door closing.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Not someone breaking in.

Someone who believed they belonged there.

Damon.

I reached for my phone and turned on the flashlight.

Claire whispered:

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at her.

“The same thing I should have done months ago.””

“What?””

“Stop trusting words.””

I opened the camera app.

Then I placed the phone behind a stack of baby blankets on the shelf.

Recording.

Claire stared.

“You’re recording him?””

“I’m recording everyone.””

The footsteps stopped outside the nursery.

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then the door opened.

Damon stood there.

The man I married.

The father of my child.

The person who had spent months convincing me he loved me.

His eyes moved from me to Claire.

And something changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Anger.

“You’re here.””

Claire stepped back.

“Damon…”

He ignored her.

His eyes stayed on me.

“You knew.””

I didn’t pretend.

“Yes.””

The silence that followed was almost peaceful.

Because for the first time, nobody was acting.

Damon closed the door behind him.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I almost smiled.

“That’s what you always say.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You say it because you need me to believe I’m helpless.””

His jaw tightened.

Claire whispered:

“Damon, stop.””

He turned toward her.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

The fear on Claire’s face told me something.

She wasn’t pretending anymore.

She was afraid of him.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

“Tell her,” Damon said.

Claire looked at him.

“What?””

“Tell her the truth.””

She froze.

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Damon laughed softly.

A cold, empty sound.

“You really think Claire was the mastermind?””

Claire looked down.

“Damon…”

“You want to confess? Go ahead.””

I watched her carefully.

“What does he mean?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

My stomach tightened.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“I met Damon before you.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t know everything.””

The room became silent.

Claire took a breath.

“Victoria introduced us.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She wanted someone close to you.””

My heart dropped.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Claire wiped her face.

“At first, I thought it was just about money. I thought Victoria wanted information about your inheritance.””

I felt sick.

“And then?””

“Then Damon started changing.””

“How?””

“He became obsessed with control.””

The word again.

Control.

Claire continued.

“He wanted your trust. Your accounts. Your family connections.””

I looked at Damon.

“You married me because of my money.””

His expression hardened.

“You think this is about money?””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I waited.

Then he said:

“It’s about what your father left behind.””

I froze.

“My father?””

Damon stepped closer.

“You were never supposed to find out this way.””

Claire whispered:

“Damon, stop.””

But he didn’t.

“Your father wasn’t just wealthy, Emily.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What are you talking about?””

“He knew things.””

“What things?””

Damon smiled sadly.

“Things Victoria spent years trying to hide.””

My mother’s warning.

The investigation.

The documents.

Everything suddenly connected.

“My parents knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I was sent to find out what they knew.””

The words hurt more than the affair.

Because the affair was betrayal.

This was something worse.

It meant my entire marriage had been built on a mission.

“You never loved me.””

Damon looked at me.

For a moment, I saw regret.

Then it disappeared.

“I wasn’t supposed to.””

The sentence broke something inside me.

Claire started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I pointed toward the crib.

“You were going to stand beside me while they took my daughter from me.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

Then the lights came back on.

And everyone froze.

Because standing in the doorway was someone none of us expected.

Victoria.

She looked perfectly calm.

Almost elegant.

Like she hadn’t just walked into a room full of shattered lives.

She looked at me.

Then smiled.

“Emily.””

My blood ran cold.

“You have your mother’s eyes.””

I stared.

“You knew my mother was investigating you.””

Victoria tilted her head.

“Yes.””

“And you let her die.””

Damon looked away.

Claire stopped breathing.

Victoria’s smile faded slightly.

Then she said:

“Your mother made a mistake.””

I stepped forward.

“What mistake?””

May you like

She looked directly at me.

“Thinking the truth would save her.””
