Chapter 19: The Sister I Never Knew
For several seconds after Damon’s call ended, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen around one impossible word.
Claire.
My best friend.
The woman who held my hand through heartbreak.
The woman who stood beside me when I got married.
The woman who hid in my closet.
My sister.
“No,” I whispered.
Rachel looked at me carefully.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Damon lies. That’s what he does.””
Richard’s face was pale.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because Richard didn’t look surprised.
He looked defeated.
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“You knew.””
Richard sat down slowly.
“I found out years ago.””
The pain was immediate.
Not because of Claire.
Not even because of Damon.
Because once again, someone who claimed to love me chose silence.
“How long?””
Richard looked away.
“Before your wedding.””
I laughed.
A broken, quiet laugh.
“Before my wedding.””
The words repeated.
Everything happened before my wedding.
Before I said my vows.
Before I promised forever to a man who had been sent into my life.
Before I called Claire my sister in every way except blood.
I looked at Rachel.
“Did you know too?””
She shook her head immediately.
“No.””
I believed her.
That was the strange thing.
After everything, I still knew when Rachel was telling the truth.
Richard opened the folder again.
“I didn’t know who Claire was at first.””
“Then how did you find out?””
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father?””
Richard nodded.
“Your father had a relationship before he met your mother.””
I stared at him.
“An affair?””
“No.””
He paused.
“A child.””
The room went silent.
“Claire.””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
My legs suddenly felt weak.
“She knew.””
Richard nodded.
“She knew before you did.””
The betrayal felt different now.
Because Claire didn’t just steal my husband.
She entered my life knowing exactly who I was.
Knowing my family.
Knowing my inheritance.
Knowing everything.
“She became my friend because of Victoria.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“At first.””
“At first?””
He sighed.
“Claire was not like Victoria.””
I almost got angry.
“Don’t defend her.””
“I’m not.””
He looked at me.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
Richard explained that Claire had been raised by Victoria after her mother died.
She grew up believing Victoria was protecting her.
She believed the lies.
She believed Damon was the only person who understood her.
Until she discovered the truth.
That she was being used too.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
Fear.
Self-interest.
Weakness.
The same things that destroyed every person involved.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
*Please let me explain.*
I stared at it.
Then another.
*I never wanted to hurt you.*
I almost threw the phone.
But I didn’t.
Instead, I replied.
*Come alone.*
Rachel looked at me.
“Emily, are you sure?””
“No.””
I looked at the door.
“But I need answers.””
An hour later, Claire arrived.
Alone.
No makeup.
No expensive clothes.
No performance.
Just Claire.
She looked exhausted.
When she saw Richard, she stopped.
“You told her.””
Richard said nothing.
Claire looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I held up my hand.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“Not yet.””
The silence between us was heavier than any argument.
“Is it true?””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
“How long have you known?””
“Since I was eighteen.””
I closed my eyes.
“Eighteen.””
She nodded.
“My mother told me.””
“Victoria.””
“Yes.””
Claire sat down.
“She told me I was abandoned by your father. She told me your family took everything from me.””
I stared.
“And you believed her.””
“Yes.””
A tear fell.
“I was angry.””
“And then?””
She looked at me.
“Then I met you.””
The answer surprised me.
“You didn’t know?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I became your friend before I knew.””
For a moment, I remembered the real Claire.
The girl who brought soup when I was sick.
The woman who stayed up with me after my first miscarriage.
The person who knew my fears.
Then I remembered the closet.
The camisole.
The lies.
“You could have told me.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Claire looked down.
“Because by the time I understood everything, I was already trapped.””
I watched her.
“What does Damon have over you?””
Her face changed.
Fear.
“He knows what Victoria did.””
“What did she do?””
Claire whispered:
“She killed my mother.””
The room went silent.
My anger stopped.
Not because I forgave her.
Because suddenly I saw the entire picture.
Everyone was trapped in Victoria’s world.
Everyone except me.
Because I was the one person who could destroy it.
Claire reached into her bag.
“I brought this.””
She placed a small drive on the table.
“What is it?””
“Everything.””
I looked at her.
“Why now?””
She looked toward my stomach.
“Because I know what it feels like to grow up without the truth.””
A tear fell.
“And I don’t want your daughter to inherit this.””
I picked up the drive.
Then Claire whispered:
“But there’s one thing you need to know.””
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Victoria knows about this.””
My heart sank.
“How?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“Because Damon was never working for her.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was working for someone else.””
