Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I didn’t sleep that night.
Damon slept like a man who believed tomorrow would look exactly like yesterday.
His breathing was slow.
Peaceful.
One hand rested near my stomach like he was playing the role of loving husband even in his dreams.
I stared at the ceiling.
I thought about every moment I had ignored.
Every late meeting.
Every sudden password change.
Every time Claire defended him too quickly.
I used to think betrayal arrived loudly.
A confession.
A fight.
A dramatic goodbye.
I never imagined it would arrive quietly.
In my own bedroom.
Wearing my best friend’s perfume.
At 3:17 in the morning, I carefully climbed out of bed.
The nursery was across the hallway.
The room we had spent months preparing.
The pale yellow walls.
The wooden crib.
The stuffed rabbit Damon bought after our first ultrasound.
I sat in the rocking chair and opened the picture I had taken.
The notebook was barely visible.
But it was enough.
I needed it.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed the truth.
The next morning, Damon acted normal.
That was the part that hurt the most.
He made coffee.
He kissed my forehead.
He asked if I wanted pancakes.
“Did you sleep okay?”” he asked.
I watched him flip a pancake like he wasn’t a stranger.
“Not really,” I said.
His hand paused.
“Because of the baby?””
“Yes.””
A tiny lie.
The first lie I told him.
He smiled sympathetically.
“You know I’m here for you, right?””
I almost laughed.
Instead, I smiled.
“I know.””
After he left for work, I waited ten minutes.
Then I called someone.
Not Claire.
Not Damon.
Someone who had no reason to protect them.
My sister-in-law, Rachel.
She worked in digital security and had always been the person in my family who noticed things everyone else missed.
When she arrived, she took one look at my face.
“What happened?”” she asked.
I handed her my phone.
She looked through the pictures.
Her expression changed.
“Emily…”
“I need you to help me find out what’s on that notebook.””
Rachel looked at me carefully.
“You’re not confronting them?””
“No.””
“Why?””
I looked toward the nursery.
“Because right now, they think I’m broken.””
I picked up my ultrasound picture.
“And broken people are easy to underestimate.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
For the next hour, we searched.
Not illegally.
Not recklessly.
Just putting together the pieces that were already in front of me.
Bank records.
Shared accounts.
Public wedding posts.
Social media.
Then Rachel stopped scrolling.
“Emily.””
I looked up.
She turned the laptop around.
There was a photo.
Claire and Damon.
At a charity event.
Six months ago.
Standing too close.
Too comfortable.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
The caption was from Claire.
*“Some connections are impossible to explain.””*
My hands went cold.
Six months.
They had been careful.
They had been planning.
Then Rachel found something else.
A calendar entry.
Damon’s email had synced with an old family tablet.
The event name was simple.
“Future.””
The date was three weeks away.
The same week my daughter was due.
“What is this?”” I whispered.
Rachel clicked.
The file opened.
There was no message.
Only a document.
A draft.
My name was at the top.
*Emily Carter Separation Agreement.*
My breathing stopped.
They weren’t just having an affair.
They were preparing for my exit.
They had already decided my future.
Then I saw the final line.
“After Emily gives birth, Damon will announce the separation and move forward with Claire.””
My vision blurred.
They weren’t waiting to leave me.
They were waiting until I was vulnerable.
Until I was holding our daughter.
Until I had no strength left.
That evening, Damon came home carrying flowers.
Flowers.
I almost admired the confidence.
“Just wanted to surprise you,” he said.
I looked at the bouquet.
White roses.
The same flowers Claire had chosen for her wedding.
“Why those?”” I asked.
He blinked.
“What?””
“Nothing.””
He smiled.
“You’ve seemed stressed lately. I thought this would help.””
I looked at him.
The man I married.
The father of my child.
The person who promised to protect me.
“I appreciate it.””
He kissed me.
And I let him.
Because now I knew something he didn’t.
The truth was my weapon.
That night, I went back upstairs.
The notebook was still there.
I had found a way to retrieve it without Damon knowing.
My hands shook as I opened the cover.
The first page contained dates.
The second contained money amounts.
The third contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.
*“Once Emily signs, everything becomes ours.””*
But underneath that sentence was a name.
A name I never expected to see.
May you like
A name that changed everything.
Because Claire and Damon weren’t the only people involved.
