Chapter 10: The Name He Buried
I stared at the photograph on my phone until my eyes burned.
A picture of me walking into Rachel’s house.
A picture taken by someone who was close enough to know where I was.
Close enough to follow me.
My first instinct was fear.
My second was anger.
But the third feeling surprised me.
Clarity.
For weeks, I had been reacting.
To Damon’s lies.
To Claire’s betrayal.
To Victoria’s manipulation.
But now I understood something.
Fear was exactly what they wanted.
Fear made people hide.
Fear made people surrender.
Fear made people sign papers without reading them.
I locked my phone and placed it face down on the table.
Then I did something Damon never expected.
I smiled.
Because whoever sent that message had just made their biggest mistake.
They had admitted they were watching me.
And people who watch closely always leave something behind.
The next morning, I met Rachel at a private office she used when working on sensitive cases.
She looked exhausted.
“You slept?””
“A little.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“Emily.””
I looked at her.
“Okay. No.””
She sighed.
“I figured.””
I placed my phone on the desk.
“Someone followed me yesterday.””
She read the message.
Her face hardened.
“This is a threat.””
“Yes.””
“We should go to the police.””
I looked down.
“Not yet.””
Rachel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because if they know I’m scared, they’ll change everything.””
She understood immediately.
“You want them to think they still have control.””
“Exactly.””
Rachel leaned back.
“You’re starting to think like them.””
The words bothered me.
Not because they were wrong.
Because they were true.
I had spent my whole life believing kindness meant trusting people.
Now I was learning something different.
Kindness without awareness was just an invitation to be hurt.
Rachel opened a file on her computer.
“I kept digging into Damon’s records.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you find?””
She turned the screen toward me.
“Daniel Carter.””
The name still felt strange.
Like it belonged to someone else.
“Damon’s real identity was sealed after a court case when he was twenty-four.””
“What court case?””
Rachel clicked.
“Fraud.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He was involved in a financial scheme.””
“By himself?””
Rachel looked at me.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“Victoria.””
Of course.
Everything led back to her.
Rachel continued.
“According to these records, Damon was used as the public face of several transactions. He signed documents. He opened accounts. But Victoria controlled everything behind the scenes.””
“So he was protecting her.””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
The man I married wasn’t just hiding an affair.
He had spent years helping his mother manipulate people.
Then Rachel found something else.
A marriage record.
My breath stopped.
“Emily…”
I looked at the screen.
Damon had been married before.
Not officially.
Not legally.
But there was a woman listed in old documents.
A woman named Lauren Wells.
“Who is she?””
Rachel searched.
Then her expression changed.
“She disappeared.””
My skin went cold.
“Disappeared?””
“Six years ago.””
The same year my mother died.
The same year I met Damon.
A horrible thought entered my mind.
“What happened to her?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“I think you need to talk to someone.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Lauren’s sister.””
Two hours later, we sat across from a woman named Megan Wells.
She looked at me with suspicion.
“You’re married to Daniel?””
I nodded.
Her face tightened.
“He told me he was done with that life.””
“What life?””
Megan laughed bitterly.
“The life where everyone around him becomes disposable.””
My heart sank.
“Tell me about Lauren.””
Megan looked down.
“My sister loved him.””
I knew that pain.
“She thought he loved her too.””
“What happened?””
Megan swallowed.
“She found out about Victoria.””
I leaned forward.
“What did she find?””
“That Daniel wasn’t trying to build a future with her.””
Megan’s voice lowered.
“He was trying to use her.””
The room became silent.
“Use her for what?””
Megan looked at me.
“For access.””
My stomach tightened.
“Access to what?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
I already knew.
Money.
Inheritance.
Control.
The same thing he wanted from me.
Megan reached into her bag.
“I kept this because I thought someone would need it someday.””
She handed me an envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Damon.
Victoria.
Lauren.
And another person.
My mother.
I stared.
The four of them were standing outside a courthouse.
The date was written on the back.
Six years ago.
Three weeks before my mother died.
My hands started shaking.
“My mother knew him.””
Megan nodded.
“She knew exactly who he was.””
I looked at her.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Megan’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because she tried.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Megan reached into the envelope again.
She pulled out a small piece of paper.
A message.
My mother’s handwriting.
But this one was different.
This one was dated the day before she died.
It contained only one sentence.
*I found proof. Damon knows. I have to protect Emily before it’s too late.*
I stared at the words.
Then my phone rang.
Damon.
I looked at his name.
For the first time, I didn’t see my husband.
I saw the person my mother was trying to save me from.
I answered.
“Hello?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Emily.””
“Yes?””
“I know where you’ve been.””
My blood ran cold.
May you like
He continued.
“And I think it’s time we finally talked about the truth.””
