Chapter 17: The Evidence They Couldn’t Destroy

We didn’t go home.

That was the first rule Rachel made.

“No house.””

“No hotel.””

“No place Damon expects.””

We drove without speaking.

My mind was full.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every moment I thought I understood.

Now I questioned everything.

Rachel finally stopped at an old office building downtown.

“Where are we?””

“Somewhere Victoria doesn’t know exists.””

I looked at her.

“You have a secret office?””

“My mother helped me create it.””

I froze.

“Your mother?””

Rachel nodded.

“My family has been collecting evidence against Victoria for years.””

Inside the office were shelves.

Boxes.

Files.

Photos.

A lifetime of secrets.

Rachel opened one box.

“This is everything your mother collected.””

I touched the folder.

“Why didn’t you give this to me before?””

“Because she told me not to.””

I looked at her.

“She said?””

Rachel swallowed.

“She said if you knew too early, you would run toward the danger.””

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like her.””

Rachel smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

For the first time, I saw how much Rachel missed my mother too.

She wasn’t just protecting me.

She was protecting a promise.

Rachel placed a recorder on the table.

“This is the last conversation your mother ever recorded.””

My breath stopped.

“You have her voice?””

“Yes.””

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother spoke.

“If someone is hearing this, it means I failed.””

My eyes filled immediately.

“Emily, if this is you…”

I covered my mouth.

Her voice.

After all these years.

“Please understand something. I never wanted you to fight this battle.””

A pause.

“I wanted you to have a normal life.””

I closed my eyes.

“But Victoria doesn’t stop when people walk away.””

The recording continued.

“She has someone inside the family.””

Rachel looked at me.

I listened carefully.

“Someone who will inherit everything if Emily loses control.””

My heart raced.

Inheritance.

My daughter.

My family.

Then my mother said something that changed everything.

“Damon is not the final threat.””

Silence.

“He is only the person Victoria sent.””

I stared at Rachel.

“What does that mean?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

The recording continued.

“The real person behind this has been hidden from everyone.””

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“Emily, if you trust anyone, trust the person who shows you proof instead of asking for forgiveness.””

Then the recording ended.

I sat there.

Trying to understand.

Damon wasn’t the mastermind.

Victoria wasn’t the final person.

Someone else was above them.

Rachel opened another file.

“This is why we need to move quickly.””

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Names.

One name appeared repeatedly.

A company.

A foundation.

A person connected to my father.

I looked closer.

Then I stopped.

“No.””

Rachel watched me.

“What?””

I pointed.

“This person…”

The name belonged to someone who had been at my wedding.

Someone who gave a speech.

Someone who hugged me and said my parents would be proud.

My uncle.

My father’s brother.

The man who managed the family estate after my parents died.

“He was involved.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

“Everyone.””

Not everyone.

But enough.

Enough to make me wonder if my entire life had been built on lies.

Then the office door opened.

We both froze.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm.

I recognized him immediately.

My uncle.

Richard Carter.

He looked at me.

Then at Rachel.

“I was hoping you would find this before Damon did.””

Rachel stepped between us.

“How did you get here?””

Richard sighed.

“Because I’ve been protecting Emily longer than either of you know.””

I stared.

“Protecting me?””

He looked at me sadly.

“No.””

May you like

A pause.

“Protecting the truth.””
