Chapter 7: The Missing Watch and the Final Trap
“She's trying to frame me.””
Marcus stood in the middle of his living room, staring at the photograph on Madison's tablet.
His father's antique gold watch had disappeared from his bedroom three days earlier.
Now he understood why.
Vanessa hadn't simply stolen money from Jordan. She had been building a case against Marcus, piece by piece, while secretly working with Daniel to take control of his son's inheritance.
David Reynolds took the tablet from Madison and examined the messages.
“Madison, can you show me the original conversation?””
She nodded.
“It's all here. Mom told me never to open this folder.””
David scrolled carefully.
One message caught his attention.
*Daniel:* Once the police find the watch in Marcus's car, they'll have a reason to investigate him.
*Vanessa:* What if they ask where I got it?
*Daniel:* Tell them you saw him put it there.
*Vanessa:* And the money?
*Daniel:* We'll make sure the financial records point toward Jordan. That way, Marcus will be too busy defending himself to question the trust transfer.
Marcus clenched his fists.
“They were going to put that watch in my car?””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“Your father's watch?””
Marcus nodded.
“My father gave it to me the day I graduated college. I kept it in that box because I was going to give it to Jordan when he turned eighteen.””
Jordan looked at his father.
“Is that the gold watch you showed me last Christmas?””
“Yes, buddy.””
“Why would Vanessa take it?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because she thought she could use it against me.””
The boy lowered his head.
“I should have told you sooner.””
Marcus immediately knelt.
“No. Listen to me. You were a child trying to survive something you didn't understand. You don't owe anyone an apology.””
Karen Mitchell, the child protective services investigator, approached the coffee table.
“Mr. Williams, this recording is important, but we need to preserve the original device and document how it was obtained.””
David nodded.
“I'll make sure the evidence is handled properly.””
One of the officers asked Vanessa to remain in the living room.
She looked furious.
“This is absurd! My daughter stole my tablet!””
Madison shook her head.
“You gave it to me when you bought a new one.””
“Because you were supposed to erase everything!””
The room went silent.
David slowly raised his eyes.
“Mrs. Williams, did you just acknowledge that you knew these messages existed?””
Vanessa realized what she had said.
“No. That's not what I meant.””
Madison began crying.
“Mom, why are you doing this? You told me we were going to have a better life.””
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
“We were!””
“By stealing Jordan's money?””
“Don't you understand? Your brother and you deserve something too!””
Madison shook her head.
“Jordan is my brother.””
Vanessa stared at her.
For a moment, the anger on her face looked almost like disbelief.
Then she turned toward Marcus.
“You've poisoned my children against me.””
Marcus didn't answer.
He was watching David examine another message.
This one had been sent that morning.
*Daniel:* Did you get the original trust agreement?
*Vanessa:* Yes.
*Daniel:* Good. Bring it tomorrow. We need the original signature pages.
*Vanessa:* What about the boy?
*Daniel:* Leave him out of it. He's already caused enough trouble.
Marcus read the message twice.
“Where is the original agreement?””
Vanessa remained silent.
David looked up.
“Mrs. Williams, I strongly advise you to tell us where those documents are.””
“I don't have them.””
Madison suddenly remembered something.
“Mom.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“What?””
“You told Daniel you were keeping the papers at the storage unit.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
Marcus stared at her.
“What storage unit?””
Madison swallowed.
“The one near the old highway. You said nobody would look there.””
David immediately wrote down the information.
The officers asked Vanessa whether she would identify the location.
She refused.
Then her phone vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
A third time.
She looked at the screen and quickly turned it facedown.
Marcus noticed.
“Is that Daniel?””
“No.””
“Then answer it.””
“I don't have to do anything you say.””
David spoke calmly.
“Mrs. Williams, nobody is asking you to discuss private communications without proper legal guidance. But you should understand that deleting or destroying relevant records could create additional problems.””
Vanessa picked up her purse.
“I need a lawyer.””
“That would be sensible,” David replied.
For the next hour, the officers documented the statements and collected information about the missing watch, the financial records, and the trust documents. David arranged for copies of the relevant materials to be preserved.
Vanessa was informed that the allegations would be investigated separately from the financial fraud concerns.
Before leaving, Karen spoke privately with Jordan.
“Jordan, you did something very brave tonight. You told the truth even though it was difficult.””
Jordan nodded.
“Will I have to leave Dad?””
Karen looked at him kindly.
“Our priority is making sure you're safe. Your father is cooperating fully, and we'll continue assessing the situation.””
Jordan glanced toward Marcus.
His father was standing beside Evelyn, looking older than he had that morning.
“Dad?””
Marcus immediately walked over.
“Yeah?””
“Can we go somewhere else tonight?””
Marcus looked at the storage-room door upstairs.
He understood.
“Absolutely. We'll stay at Grandma's until everything is settled.””
Evelyn smiled.
“My guest room is already made up.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course. You've always wanted him to yourself.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“No, Vanessa. I wanted him to have a childhood.””
Vanessa's phone rang again.
This time, she answered.
“Daniel, I told you not to call!””
Marcus couldn't hear the other side, but he watched her expression change.
“What do you mean they found out?””
She stepped into the hallway.
Then her voice dropped.
“No. The documents are safe.””
A pause.
“What?””
Her face drained of color.
“Daniel, you promised me!””
Marcus looked at David.
Something had happened.
Vanessa ended the call and slowly turned around.
“What's wrong?”” Marcus asked.
She didn't answer.
Then she looked directly at Madison.
“You told them about the storage unit.””
Madison nodded.
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Then Daniel is going to know where to find you.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Don't you threaten my daughter.””
Vanessa looked at him with an expression he had never seen before.
“I'm not the one you should be worried about.””
David immediately asked what Daniel had said.
Vanessa swallowed.
“He knows the trust administrator has placed a hold on the transfer.””
“And?””
“He said if the transfer doesn't happen tomorrow, he'll make sure nobody gets anything.””
David frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked down.
Then she whispered:
“He's already sold the properties.””
Marcus went completely still.
“That's impossible. He doesn't own them.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He doesn't need to. He has the original documents, and someone has already paid him a deposit.””
David immediately called the trust administrator.
And within minutes, he learned something even worse.
