Chapter 6: The Woman Who Had Planned Everything

The trust administrator's voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Williams, we received an urgent request this afternoon to transfer administrative authority over Jordan's inheritance.””

Marcus gripped the edge of the dresser.

“Who submitted it?””

“A representative claiming to be acting on your behalf.””

“That's impossible. I never authorized anything.””

“We understand that now. However, the documents include what appears to be your signature and a notarized authorization.””

David stepped closer.

“I'm David Reynolds, Mr. Williams's attorney. I need the submission immediately suspended. We have reason to believe the documents were fraudulently obtained.””

There was a pause.

Then the administrator answered.

“We can place a temporary hold pending verification. But I need to warn you: the proposed transfer is scheduled for tomorrow morning.””

Marcus looked at David.

“Tomorrow?””

David nodded grimly.

“Who is the receiving party?”” he asked.

The administrator read the name.

“Carter Property Holdings LLC.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

She was standing at the bedroom doorway.

Her face had gone completely still.

“Daniel,” Marcus whispered.

David ended the call after arranging the emergency hold.

Then he turned to Vanessa.

“Where is the original trust agreement?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Stop lying!””

“I don't know where it is!””

“Your daughter just told us you kept it in this safe!””

Vanessa looked at Madison.

“You little traitor.””

Madison began crying.

Marcus pointed toward the hallway.

“Don't speak to her.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You're all acting like I'm some criminal. I raised your son!””

Evelyn appeared behind Marcus.

“No. You made him afraid to eat dinner in his own home.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“You have hated me from the beginning!””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I gave you every opportunity to be a good stepmother. I welcomed you into this family. I trusted you with my grandchildren.””

She looked at Jordan.

“And you used that trust to make this little boy feel like a burden.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“He was never grateful!””

Jordan stepped out from behind his father.

“I said thank you every time you gave me food.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You should have done more.””

The words hung in the air.

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

“Get out.””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“This is my home too!””

“My attorney will handle the legal arrangements. But you are not staying here tonight.””

Vanessa looked at David.

“You can't throw me out!””

David answered carefully.

“Mr. Williams is entitled to take appropriate steps to protect himself and his son. Any longer-term property or family-law issues will need to be handled through the proper legal process.””

Marcus nodded.

“Then we'll handle it properly.””

Vanessa suddenly started crying.

Not the quiet kind.

She covered her face and began sobbing.

“Marcus, please. Don't do this. Think about our marriage.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What about the child you've been hurting for over a year?””

“I was under pressure!””

“From whom?””

She didn't answer.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“He promised he could help us.””

Marcus shook his head.

“We had everything. A home. A family.

Money for the children. What else did you need?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

For a moment, her tears disappeared.

“Your father gave everything to Jordan. Everything! The properties, the trust, the money. What did my children get?””

Marcus stared at her.

“Madison and Tyler have their own savings. I paid for their education. I bought them everything they needed.””

“But it wasn't theirs!””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

“Everything you gave them came from you. Jordan had a fortune waiting for him, and he didn't even know how lucky he was!””

Evelyn shook her head.

“So that's what this was about.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“I spent years taking care of this family! I deserved something!””

Marcus looked at the woman he had married.

“You thought my son's inheritance belonged to you?””

Vanessa looked away.

Then Madison spoke from the hallway.

“Mom, you told Daniel the money would pay off his debts.””

Vanessa spun around.

“Shut up!””

Madison continued, tears streaming down her face.

“You said he owed people money. You said if you didn't get the trust transferred, he would lose everything.””

David immediately looked up.

“Debts?””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus took a step toward her.

“Is that why you needed the money?””

She said nothing.

David asked another question.

“Mrs. Williams, does Daniel Carter have outstanding financial obligations that could explain his interest in this transfer?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“He told me he had business problems.””

“What kind of problems?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus laughed once, without humor.

“You were willing to steal from a fourteen-year-old boy to pay another man's debts?””

Vanessa suddenly pointed at Jordan.

“Because of HIM! Everything started when your father found out about that stupid inheritance!””

Jordan recoiled.

Marcus moved immediately.

“Don't you ever blame my son again.””

The doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

David checked the time.

“Who is that?””

Marcus walked downstairs.

When he opened the door, two uniformed officers stood on the porch.

A woman in a dark blue coat stood beside them, holding a clipboard.

“Mr. Williams?”” she asked.

“Yes.””

“My name is Karen Mitchell. I'm with Child Protective Services. We received a report concerning possible neglect and financial exploitation involving your son.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Thank goodness,” she said loudly.

“I've been trying to get someone to listen to me for months.””

Karen looked toward the stairs.

“Are you Vanessa Williams?””

“Yes. I'm Jordan's stepmother.””

Karen turned toward Marcus.

“We need to speak with Jordan privately, and we'll also need to understand the allegations.””

Marcus nodded.

“Of course.””

He looked at David.

“Stay with us.””

Karen entered and introduced herself to Jordan.

“Hi, Jordan. I'm not here to punish you. I just want to understand what's been happening.””

Jordan looked at his father.

Marcus knelt beside him.

“You can tell her everything, buddy. Nobody is going to hurt you for telling the truth.””

Jordan nodded.

Karen sat with him in the living room while the officers spoke with Marcus and David.

Vanessa repeatedly interrupted.

“He lies!””

“Mrs. Williams,” Karen said firmly, “please allow us to speak with the child without interruption.””

“But he's manipulative!””

Karen wrote something on her clipboard.

“Thank you. We'll discuss your concerns separately.””

For nearly forty minutes, Jordan explained the rent payments, the food restrictions, the storage room, and the money taken from his savings.

He also told Karen about the letter Vanessa had made him write.

When the interview ended, Karen requested that the family preserve the relevant financial and electronic records while the allegations were assessed.

She then spoke privately with Marcus.

“Mr. Williams, we're concerned about the information your son provided. We need to verify several details, but I strongly recommend that you keep him in a safe environment and ensure he has no unsupervised contact with anyone he says has threatened him.””

Marcus nodded.

“Absolutely.””

Then Karen looked toward Vanessa.

“Mrs. Williams, we'll also need to discuss the report you submitted about Jordan.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I have proof that he's dangerous.””

Karen opened her folder.

“Actually, we have a copy of the report you filed this morning.””

She removed a page.

It contained several allegations.

Jordan had supposedly stolen money, threatened his stepbrother, damaged property, and repeatedly refused to follow household rules.

Marcus read it.

Every accusation was false.

But one statement made him stop.

*The father is aware of the child's behavioral issues and has repeatedly refused to provide appropriate supervision.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You told them I knew?””

Vanessa remained silent.

Karen continued.

“We also received an attachment with the report.””

She placed a printed photograph on the coffee table.

It showed Jordan standing outside the grocery store with his cardboard sign.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

But this time, there was something different.

The photograph had been cropped.

The original image, which Evelyn had shown him earlier, included Vanessa standing several feet away, holding her phone.

The new version made Jordan look as though he had been abandoned.

Karen studied the two photographs.

“Do you know why these images are different?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

David examined the timestamp.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Williams, did you edit this photograph before submitting it?””

Vanessa's face turned white.

“No.””

Madison suddenly stepped forward.

“I know who did.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She was holding her mother's old tablet.

“Mom didn't just take the picture,” Madison whispered.

“She sent it to Daniel. He edited it.””

Marcus looked at the tablet.

“Can you show us?””

Madison unlocked the screen.

Her fingers trembled as she opened a folder.

There were dozens of photographs, documents, and messages.

Then she tapped a video.

The screen showed Vanessa sitting in a hotel room with Daniel.

Daniel was speaking.

“Once Marcus believes Jordan is a problem, he'll sign anything to get him out of the house.””

Vanessa laughed.

“And if he doesn't?””

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“Then we make sure he has no choice.””

Vanessa lunged toward the tablet.

“TURN THAT OFF!””

One of the officers stepped between them.

Madison backed away.

The video continued playing.

Daniel reached across the table and placed a document in front of Vanessa.

“After tomorrow, the trust is ours.””

Then Vanessa's voice came through the speakers.

“And Marcus?””

Daniel smiled.

“By the time he discovers the transfer, he'll have lost something much more important.””

The video ended.

Marcus stared at the black screen.

“What did he mean?””

Madison looked at her mother.

Then she whispered something that made the entire room go silent.

“Mom told Daniel that Dad would be arrested before the transfer was completed.””

David immediately stood.

“Arrested for what?””

Madison opened another message.

The first line was dated three days earlier.

*Daniel: The forged documents are ready. All we need now is the final piece of evidence.*

Below it was a photograph of Marcus's bedroom.

And on his bedside table sat a small black box.

Marcus recognized it.

It was the box where he kept his late father's antique gold watch.

May you like

The watch was missing.

And Vanessa had reported it stolen that morning.
