Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Locked Bedroom

“WHAT HOUSE?””

Marcus's voice shook the windows.

Madison stood frozen beside her chair.

Vanessa tightened her grip around her daughter's arm.

“She's confused. She's a teenager. She doesn't know what she's talking about.””

Madison pulled away.

“I'm not confused!””

“Madison!”” Vanessa barked.

“You told Daniel that the house was going to be ours!””

Marcus stared at his wife.

“Daniel again. Who is this man?””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“I'm done with this conversation.””

She headed toward the hallway.

Marcus stepped in front of her.

“No. You're not walking away.””

“Move, Marcus.””

“Not until you explain why my daughter—”

“YOUR daughter?”” Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You mean Jordan? The boy you've spoiled his entire life?””

Marcus's expression darkened.

“Careful.””

“He has everything! A bedroom, a television, clothes, school supplies! Meanwhile, my children have to share everything!””

Jordan sat motionless.

He had heard these words before.

Many times.

Vanessa continued.

“You act like he's some innocent little angel, but you have no idea how much trouble he causes.””

Marcus looked at his son.

“What trouble?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she pointed at Jordan.

“He steals!””

Jordan's head lifted.

“What?””

“He takes things from my room. Money. Jewelry. Even my medication!””

Marcus looked stunned.

“Jordan?””

“I didn't!””

Vanessa scoffed.

“Of course you're going to deny it.””

Evelyn stepped between them.

“Enough.””

She pulled another folder from her handbag.

“Marcus, do you remember the storage room upstairs?””

Marcus nodded.

“Of course.””

“Have you been inside recently?””

“No. Vanessa said she was organizing it.””

Evelyn turned toward Jordan.

“Sweetheart, would you show your father?””

Jordan looked terrified.

Vanessa moved immediately.

“Absolutely not! That room is private!””

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

“Private? In a house Marcus owns?””

“It's where I keep personal things!””

“Then you shouldn't mind him looking.””

Marcus took the keys from the small bowl near the hallway.

“Let's go.””

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

“Marcus, please. We can talk about this tomorrow.””

“No. We've been living with your secrets long enough.””

He walked upstairs.

Jordan followed, with Evelyn beside him.

Madison stayed near the dining room.

Tyler continued sitting at the table, staring at the untouched chicken.

At the end of the hallway was a narrow door Marcus barely remembered.

He inserted the key.

The lock turned.

When he opened it, the smell of cardboard and dust drifted into the hallway.

The room was packed with boxes.

Old clothes.

Plastic storage containers.

A broken desk.

And, in the far corner, a small mattress.

Marcus frowned.

“What's this?””

Jordan didn't answer.

Evelyn walked toward the mattress and lifted the thin blanket.

Underneath was a school backpack.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

It was Jordan's old backpack, the one he had bought for his son's first day of middle school.

“What is this doing here?””

Jordan's voice cracked.

“That's where I slept when Vanessa locked me out of my bedroom.””

Marcus slowly turned.

“She did what?””

Jordan rubbed his palms against his jeans.

“Sometimes she said I hadn't paid enough. So I had to sleep here until I earned the rest.””

Marcus stared at the mattress.

It was barely thick enough to cushion the floor.

“How long?””

“Sometimes one night. Sometimes a few days.””

Marcus looked at the boxes.

“Where did you keep your clothes?””

Jordan pointed to a plastic container.

“Those.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside were three shirts, two pairs of jeans, and a school sweatshirt.

Everything else was missing.

“Where are your other clothes?””

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

“I donated some of his old things. He was outgrowing them.””

Jordan shook his head.

“They weren't old.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“You threw away my son's clothes?””

“He doesn't need so much!””

“Then why do Madison and Tyler have entire wardrobes?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Because they're growing children.””

“So is Jordan!””

“Jordan has you. My children only have me!””

Marcus stared at her.

For the first time, he realized how carefully Vanessa had divided the children in his own home.

Her children received birthday parties, new electronics, expensive sneakers, and vacations.

Jordan received a monthly bill.

Evelyn opened the backpack.

Inside was a small notebook.

Its cover was bent, and the corners were stained.

Jordan reached for it.

“Grandma, please don't.””

Evelyn handed it to Marcus instead.

“Your father needs to see this.””

Marcus opened the first page.

It was a handwritten list.

*Rent owed: $450.*

*Late fee: $50.*

*Food deduction: $20.*

*Electricity: $35.*

*Bedroom fee: $75.*

*Punishment fee: $100.*

At the bottom, Jordan had written:

*Total: $730.*

Marcus looked confused.

“What is a bedroom fee?””

Jordan stared at the floor.

“She said I had to pay extra because my room was bigger than Tyler's.””

“And the punishment fee?””

Jordan's eyes filled.

“If I talked back. Or forgot to do something. Or if Tyler broke something and she said I should have been watching him.””

Marcus closed the notebook.

His hands were shaking.

“Jordan, how much money have you given her?””

The boy hesitated.

“I'm not sure.””

“Guess.””

“Maybe… six thousand dollars.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

She shook her head.

“That's not including the money taken from his savings.””

Marcus turned back to the notebook.

Then he noticed something tucked inside the back cover.

A folded piece of paper.

He carefully opened it.

It was a letter from a law office.

The heading read:

*NOTICE OF PROPOSED TRANSFER OF PROPERTY OWNERSHIP.*

Marcus read the address.

His own house.

The house he had bought years before marrying Vanessa.

The house that had been left to him by his late father.

And the proposed buyer's name was Daniel Carter.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What have you done?””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“I can explain.””

“You were trying to sell my house?””

“It was only an agreement!””

“Without my permission?””

“You never appreciated what I sacrificed for this family!””

Marcus held up the document.

“This is my property!””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You don't understand. Daniel said he could make everything easier.””

“Easier for whom?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then, unexpectedly, Madison began crying.

“Dad, Mom didn't just want to sell the house.””

Marcus turned.

“What do you mean?””

Madison wiped her cheeks.

“She told Daniel that after the sale, we would move somewhere else. She said Jordan would stay behind because he wasn't part of the plan.””

Jordan went completely still.

Marcus felt his stomach twist.

“What plan?””

Madison looked at her mother.

Vanessa's voice turned icy.

“Don't you dare say another word.””

But Madison kept going.

“She said once you signed the papers, she would tell everyone Jordan had stolen money from you. She already had documents prepared.””

Marcus looked down at the letter.

Then at the notebook.

Then at his son.

A terrible possibility began forming in his mind.

“Mom,” he whispered to Evelyn.

“Did you find out who Daniel really is?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I did.””

She took out her phone and opened a photograph.

“His full name is Daniel Carter. And, Marcus…”

She turned the screen toward him.

“He isn't just Vanessa's friend.””

Marcus stared at the picture.

It showed Daniel standing beside Vanessa at a courthouse.

Between them was a document bearing Marcus's signature.

Except Marcus had never signed it.

Evelyn's voice dropped.

“Your wife and this man have been preparing to take something much more valuable than your house.””

She looked toward Jordan.

“They've been trying to take your son's future.””

May you like

And then Marcus noticed the final line on the document.

*AUTHORIZATION FOR THE TRANSFER OF JORDAN WILLIAMS'S INHERITANCE TRUST.*
