Chapter 4: The Inheritance They Tried to Steal
Marcus read the document three times.
Each time, the words became harder to believe.
*AUTHORIZATION FOR THE TRANSFER OF JORDAN WILLIAMS'S INHERITANCE TRUST.*
His son had an inheritance?
He looked at Evelyn.
“Mom, what is this?””
Evelyn pulled a chair into the hallway and sat down.
“Your father established a trust for Jordan before he passed away. He wanted his grandson to have something that could never be taken away from him.””
Marcus frowned.
“I know Dad left something for Jordan. But I thought the money was being held until he turned eighteen.””
“It is. But there's more than money involved.””
Evelyn opened her handbag and removed a second folder.
“Your father owned three commercial properties downtown. Before his death, he transferred ownership of two of them into a trust for Jordan. The rental income was supposed to support his education and future.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Two properties?””
“Your father believed property was more secure than cash. The trust has been generating income for years.””
Marcus sat down heavily.
“How much?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Approximately $680,000 in accumulated assets, including the properties' current value and investment income.””
Marcus covered his mouth.
He had no idea.
His father had kept the arrangement quiet because he wanted Jordan to grow up without feeling entitled.
And now Vanessa had apparently discovered it.
“How did she get access to these documents?””
Evelyn looked toward Vanessa.
“Your wife went through your father's old files shortly after moving into this house. She found a copy of the trust agreement.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's a lie.””
Evelyn didn't blink.
“Then explain why Daniel Carter contacted the trust administrator three months ago, claiming to represent Jordan's legal interests.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“What?””
“He submitted documents requesting a change of trustee and authorization to transfer the properties into a private holding company.””
Marcus looked at the signature page again.
The signature looked almost identical to his.
Almost.
But the final letter of his last name was wrong.
“That's not my signature.””
“I know,” Evelyn said.
“I had a handwriting specialist examine it.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“This is getting ridiculous. Marcus, your mother is trying to destroy our marriage.””
Marcus held up the document.
“Then why is my signature on something I never signed?””
“I don't know!””
“Why is Daniel involved?””
“He was helping me understand the paperwork!””
“Why does the paperwork transfer my son's inheritance to a company he controls?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then she changed tactics.
“You're acting like I wanted to steal from Jordan. I was trying to protect this family. Your father should have thought about all the children, not just one.””
Marcus stood.
“Your children have never been denied anything in this house.””
“That's not true!””
“Madison has a car fund. Tyler has a gaming computer that cost nearly three thousand dollars. You took them on vacation twice last year!””
“And Jordan?””
Marcus's voice broke.
“Jordan was sleeping on a mattress in a storage room because he couldn't afford his rent.””
Vanessa looked away.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Jordan quietly asked a question.
“Dad?””
Marcus immediately turned.
“Yeah, buddy?””
“Did Grandpa leave that money because he thought I needed it?””
Marcus knelt in front of him.
“No. He left it because he loved you. Because he wanted you to have opportunities when you grew up.””
Jordan's eyes filled.
“Then why did Vanessa say I was taking money away from everyone?””
Marcus pulled him into his arms.
“Because she was wrong, son. None of this was your fault.””
Behind them, Vanessa muttered, “This is unbelievable.””
Evelyn rose.
“No, Vanessa. What's unbelievable is that you looked a child in the eye and convinced him he had to pay to deserve a place in his father's home.””
Marcus wiped Jordan's tears.
Then he took out his phone.
“I'm calling my attorney.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“Marcus, don't be dramatic.””
He dialed.
When the call connected, he spoke firmly.
“David, I need you at my house tonight. There's been an attempted fraudulent transfer involving my son's inheritance trust.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You can't do that!””
Marcus turned away from her.
“I also need someone to review every financial transaction connected to Vanessa since we got married.””
“Marcus!””
“And I want the trust administrator contacted immediately. Nobody touches those properties.””
He ended the call.
For the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
But Evelyn wasn't finished.
She reached into her folder and removed a printed email.
“Marcus, there's one more thing.””
He looked exhausted.
“What now?””
Evelyn handed him the email.
It was from Daniel to Vanessa.
The subject line read:
*AFTER THE TRANSFER — OUR NEXT STEP.*
Marcus read it silently.
Then his face hardened.
The email contained a detailed plan.
First, they would transfer Jordan's inheritance.
Then Vanessa would file for divorce.
Daniel would help her claim a portion of Marcus's assets.
But the final paragraph made Marcus's blood run cold.
Once the boy is placed with another guardian, nobody will question the transfer. Vanessa, make sure Marcus believes Jordan has behavioral problems. We need him to think sending the boy away was his own idea.
Marcus slowly lowered the paper.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You were planning to get rid of my son?””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the stairs.
“That's not what it means.””
“Then tell me what it means!””
She backed away.
And Madison, who had been standing silently in the doorway, suddenly whispered:
“Dad, there's something else you need to know.””
Marcus turned.
Madison was crying.
“Mom already talked to someone about sending Jordan away. She said she had an appointment with them tomorrow morning.””
Marcus froze.
“Who?””
May you like
Madison swallowed.
“Child services.””
