Chapter 2: The Money His Father Never Knew About

Marcus stared at the bank statements.

He counted the transfers again.

Fourteen payments.

Fourteen months.

Fourteen times his son had apparently handed over money just to sleep in his own bedroom.

“Vanessa,” he said slowly, “explain this.””

She straightened her blouse and forced a laugh.

“Your mother is twisting everything. Jordan agreed to help with household expenses.””

“He's fourteen!””

“He's old enough to understand money!””

Marcus held up the photograph.

“Then explain this.””

Vanessa glanced at it.

“He was helping me with a community fundraiser.””

Evelyn let out a short, humorless laugh.

“A fundraiser?””

“Yes!””

“Funny. I called the grocery store manager. He told me Jordan was outside asking strangers for money because you told him he couldn't come home without four hundred and fifty dollars.””

Jordan's head snapped up.

“Grandma…”

Marcus turned toward him.

“Is that true?””

Jordan's eyes filled with tears.

He looked at Vanessa before answering.

That single glance told Marcus more than any bank statement.

“Jordan,” his father said gently, “look at me. You're not in trouble. Tell me the truth.””

Jordan swallowed.

“She said I had to earn my place here.””

Marcus crouched beside his chair.

“What does that mean, son?””

“She said you already had too many bills. She said if I loved you, I wouldn't make your life harder.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Oh, here we go. He's making himself the victim again.””

Jordan flinched.

Marcus noticed.

“Don't speak to him like that.””

Jordan continued, his voice barely audible.

“She said if I told you, you'd think I was ungrateful. She said you might send me away because you were tired of dealing with me.””

Marcus felt something cold settle in his chest.

“Who told you I was tired of you?””

Jordan looked down.

“Vanessa.””

Madison finally lifted her head.

“Mom, can we just finish eating?””

Vanessa snapped her fingers at her daughter.

“Stay out of this!””

Evelyn removed another document from the envelope.

“There's more.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“What else?””

“Your son wasn't the only one giving her money.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That's ridiculous.””

Evelyn slid a bank statement toward Marcus.

“Look at the account number.””

Marcus recognized it.

It was the account he'd created for Jordan when his son was born.

Every birthday, Marcus deposited money into it. He had intended it to help Jordan buy his first car, pay for college, or start his adult life.

He had never withdrawn a dollar.

“Why is my son's account connected to Vanessa's bank account?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa's face tightened.

“I was managing his savings.””

“You were managing his savings?””

“He's a minor! Someone has to!””

Marcus scanned the statement.

A withdrawal of $2,000.

Then another for $1,500.

Then $3,200.

He flipped the pages faster.

The total was more than he could process.

“Where did this money go?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Household expenses.””

“You told me Jordan was contributing to household expenses!””

“He was!””

“Then why were you taking money from his savings too?””

Vanessa raised her voice.

“Because you never give me enough money to run this household!””

Marcus stood.

“I transfer money into this house every month!””

“Not enough!””

“You have a credit card with no spending limit!””

“That's not the point!””

Evelyn calmly interrupted.

“Marcus, there's another account.””

She pulled out a smaller envelope.

Inside was a series of printed messages.

“I found these on the old tablet Jordan used before Vanessa took it away.””

Jordan looked frightened.

“Grandma, please…”

Evelyn reached over and squeezed his hand.

“You don't have to be afraid anymore.””

Marcus took the first printed page.

It was a text conversation between Vanessa and someone saved as Daniel.

*Vanessa:* He paid again. The boy is finally learning.

*Daniel:* How much this time?

*Vanessa:* Four fifty. And I'm getting more out of his savings next week.

*Daniel:* Does Marcus know?

*Vanessa:* Marcus doesn't know anything. He's too busy working.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

He read the next message.

*Daniel:* What happens if Jordan refuses?

*Vanessa:* I'll remind him that he's lucky Marcus kept him after his mother left.

Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.

Jordan's biological mother had passed away when he was six.

He had never been abandoned.

And Vanessa knew that.

“Mom,” Marcus whispered, “who is Daniel?””

Vanessa snatched the paper from his hand.

“That's private!””

Marcus grabbed her wrist.

“Who is Daniel?””

“Let go of me!””

Evelyn rose slowly from her chair.

“That's exactly what I wanted you to ask.””

She reached into the envelope one final time and removed a photograph.

This one showed Vanessa standing beside a man in a parking lot.

The man was holding a folder.

On the back, someone had written a date and a sentence:

*The day Vanessa tried to sell Jordan's inheritance.*

Marcus stared at the picture.

Then he looked at his wife.

“Tell me this isn't what I think it is.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with panic.

But before she could answer, Madison suddenly stood.

“Mom, you said Dad would never find out about the house.””

The entire room went silent.

Marcus slowly turned toward his stepdaughter.

“What house?””

Madison's face went white.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“Madison. Upstairs. NOW!””

But Marcus was already looking at Evelyn.

May you like

His mother nodded grimly.

“Son, sit down. You're going to need to hear everything.””
