Chapter 5: The Report That Could Destroy a Father
The doorbell rang at 8:17 p.m.
Marcus glanced toward the entrance.
“Who is that?””
Evelyn looked through the window.
“David is here.””
Marcus opened the door.
His attorney, David Reynolds, stepped inside carrying a leather briefcase. He was in his early fifties, with silver hair and the calm expression of someone who had handled too many family disasters.
“Marcus,” David said, shaking his hand.
“You sounded serious on the phone.””
“I am.””
Marcus led him into the living room.
Jordan sat beside Evelyn on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket. He had finally eaten something after his grandmother brought him a sandwich from the kitchen.
Vanessa stood near the fireplace.
Her arms were crossed.
“I don't appreciate strangers being brought into our private family matters.””
David placed his briefcase on the coffee table.
“Mrs. Williams, I'm here because Mr. Williams contacted me about possible financial fraud involving a minor's trust.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“There's no fraud.””
David opened the folder.
“Then this should be a very short meeting.””
He examined the proposed property transfer, the questionable signature, and the emails Evelyn had printed.
His expression grew increasingly serious.
“Marcus, who has access to your financial records?””
“Me, Vanessa, and my accountant.””
“Has your wife ever had access to your father's estate documents?””
“I believe so.””
David nodded.
“And who is Daniel Carter?””
Vanessa interrupted.
“A family friend.””
David looked up.
“Does this family friend have any professional relationship with your wife?””
“No,” Vanessa answered quickly.
Madison, sitting on the bottom stair, whispered, “He's her boyfriend.””
Vanessa spun around.
“Madison!””
David closed the folder.
“That's an important distinction.””
Marcus stared at his wife.
“Your boyfriend?””
Vanessa shook her head furiously.
“She doesn't know what she's saying!””
Madison stood.
“I saw you kissing him in the car outside the hotel!””
“Go upstairs!””
“You told him you were going to leave Dad after you got the money!””
Vanessa stepped toward her daughter.
Marcus moved between them.
“Don't you dare threaten her.””
Madison began crying.
“I didn't want to say anything. Mom said if I told Dad, she'd send me to live with my biological father.””
The room fell silent.
Vanessa's expression changed.
For the first time, her daughter was no longer protecting her.
David quietly asked Marcus to sit down.
“There's something else we need to discuss.””
He took out his laptop and reviewed the email from Daniel.
“This appears to show an attempt to obtain control of a minor's trust through fraudulent authorization. We need to preserve every document and avoid confronting the other individual until the relevant records are secured.””
Marcus nodded.
“Do whatever needs to be done.””
David looked at Jordan.
“Jordan, I have one question. Has anyone ever asked you to sign documents about your grandfather's properties?””
Jordan shook his head.
“No, sir.””
“Has anyone asked you to tell people that your father was hurting you or not taking care of you?””
Jordan hesitated.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
She stared back at him.
“Jordan,” Marcus said gently, “you can tell the truth.””
The boy took a breath.
“She made me practice saying that Dad left me alone at night.””
Marcus's face went white.
“Why?””
Jordan's voice trembled.
“She said if I told someone Dad was neglecting me, I might get to live somewhere else. She said it would make things easier for everybody.””
David leaned forward.
“Did she explain where you would go?””
“No.””
“Did she ever ask you to write anything?””
Jordan nodded.
“She made me write a letter saying I didn't want to live with Dad anymore.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Evelyn took his hand.
David looked toward Vanessa.
“Do you still have that letter?””
Vanessa remained silent.
Madison suddenly spoke.
“It's in Mom's bedroom. Inside the blue folder.””
Vanessa's head snapped around.
“HOW DARE YOU!””
David stood.
“Mr. Williams, I strongly recommend that you don't allow any documents or electronic records to be destroyed.””
Marcus immediately called his attorney's office and asked for instructions.
David explained that the family needed to preserve evidence and arrange appropriate legal steps to protect Jordan.
Then Marcus remembered something.
“Madison said Vanessa has an appointment tomorrow morning.””
David looked up.
“With whom?””
“Child services.””
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“I was going to ask for help! There's nothing illegal about wanting support for a troubled child.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Troubled?””
“He's disobedient. He steals. He lies.””
Jordan shook his head.
“I never stole anything.””
“You stole money from my purse!””
“I didn't!””
Vanessa turned toward David.
“See? This is exactly what I mean.””
David calmly removed another document from his briefcase.
“Mrs. Williams, accusations of this kind should be supported by evidence.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“I have evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Bank records.””
Marcus frowned.
“What bank records?””
Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a small stack of papers.
“These show money disappearing from the house.””
David examined them.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Do you recognize these transactions?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
David checked the dates.
He noticed something.
Every withdrawal occurred on a day Jordan had been at school.
Every transaction was made using an ATM card linked to an account Vanessa controlled.
He turned one page over.
A handwritten note was attached.
*Jordan — $300.*
Then another.
*Jordan — $500.*
Then another.
*Jordan — $250.*
David looked at Vanessa.
“Where did these notes come from?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Jordan took the money.””
Jordan stood up.
“I didn't!””
Marcus pulled his son close.
“Sit down, buddy.””
David continued examining the documents.
Suddenly, he stopped.
“Marcus, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Did you authorize your wife to use Jordan's name on financial records?””
“No.””
David turned the page around.
At the bottom was a signature.
*Jordan Williams.*
But Jordan was only fourteen.
And the signature was written in handwriting much older than his.
David looked at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Williams, this is not simply a family disagreement anymore.””
Vanessa's hands began trembling.
Then her phone rang.
The screen displayed Daniel Carter.
She quickly declined the call.
But another message appeared.
David saw the preview.
*Daniel: THEY KNOW ABOUT THE TRUST. GET THE ORIGINAL PAPERS BEFORE MARCUS FINDS THEM.*
Marcus read it over David's shoulder.
He looked at his wife.
“Where are the original papers?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Madison suddenly covered her mouth.
Then she whispered:
“Mom keeps them in the safe behind her bedroom mirror.””
Marcus turned toward the stairs.
“David, come with me.””
Vanessa rushed forward.
“NO! YOU CAN'T GO IN THERE!””
But Marcus was already moving.
And when he reached the bedroom, he discovered that the safe door was standing slightly open.
Inside was an empty folder.
The original trust agreement was gone.
So was Jordan's birth certificate.
And on the empty shelf lay a small envelope addressed to Marcus.
Inside was a handwritten message.
*If you want to see your son again, stop looking into the inheritance.*
Marcus read it twice.
Then he looked at David.
“Who took these papers?””
David's phone began ringing.
It was the trust administrator.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed.
“Marcus,” he said quietly.
“What's wrong?””
May you like
David covered the phone.
“Someone has already submitted the original documents.””
