Emma’s Birthday Secret / Chapter 4 / 20

Chapter 4: The Lie Behind the Door

I didn’t leave Rachel’s house immediately.

That was the first mistake I made.

The second was believing that fear always looks like guilt.

Sometimes fear looks like a person who has been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

Rachel stood in her living room, staring at Mark’s message on my phone.

“Don’t trust Rachel. She knows.””

The words sat between us like a weapon.

“Lily,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“How long?””

Her eyebrows pulled together.

“How long what?””

“How long have you known?””

Rachel’s lips parted.

“I knew Mark was in trouble.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked away.

“How long have you known something was wrong with him?””

The silence answered before she did.

“Almost a year.””

A year.

I felt something inside me crack.

“A year?””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“He came to me because he was desperate.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“He said you would leave him.””

I stared at her.

“Maybe I should have.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

That response hurt more than an excuse would have.

Because she wasn’t fighting.

She wasn’t pretending.

She knew.

“You helped him hide this from me,” I said.

“Yes.””

“You let me live with him.””

“Yes.””

“You came to my daughter’s birthday party knowing my husband was drowning in debt.””

Rachel covered her face.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

My sister.

The person who held me after my mother died.

The person who helped me pick out Emma’s first birthday dress.

The person who promised me she would always protect my family.

She had been protecting a secret instead.

“Why did you lend him money?”” I asked.

Rachel looked at the floor.

“Because he said he would lose everything.””

“What everything?””

“His house.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Our house?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked toward the door.

“Lily, wait.””

I stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t turn around.

“Sorry doesn’t give me back the year you stole.””

I left.

But I didn’t go home.

I couldn’t.

Home didn’t feel like home anymore.

Instead, I drove to the hospital.

Emma was sleeping when I arrived.

Her small body looked even smaller under the white blanket.

I sat beside her and watched her breathe.

A few minutes later, Mark walked in.

I knew it was him before I looked up.

I knew his footsteps.

I hated that I still knew them.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I said.

His face tightened.

“She’s my daughter.””

“Then start acting like it.””

He stood beside the bed.

“Lily…”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to explain yet.””

“I never hurt Emma.””

I studied his face.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I’m her father.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not an answer.””

His eyes became wet.

“Because I love her.””

I looked at Emma.

“Then why did you put her in danger?””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t.””

“Your vial was found in your car.””

“I don’t know how it got there.””

“The same sedative you recognized immediately?””

He looked away.

“I work with medical supplies.””

“Exactly.””

The room went quiet.

Then Mark whispered:

“Someone is setting me up.””

I almost believed him.

That scared me.

Because a part of me still wanted him to be innocent.

A part of me wanted this to be a nightmare.

But nightmares ended.

This was my life.

“Who?”” I asked.

Mark looked at me.

“Rachel.””

My chest tightened.

“You’re blaming her?””

“She hates me.””

“She saved you.””

“No.””

His voice became sharp.

“She trapped me.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, Detective Harris entered the room.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I turned.

“Detective.””

His expression was serious.

“Can I speak with you privately?””

Mark stood.

“I’m staying.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Actually, Mr. Carter, I need you to wait outside.””

Mark’s face hardened.

“Why?””

“Because I’m about to discuss evidence.””

Mark stared at him.

Then he walked out.

The moment the door closed, Detective Harris lowered his voice.

“We found fingerprints on the vial.””

My heart raced.

“Whose?””

He hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“What problem?””

“The vial had multiple fingerprints.””

“Whose?””

He looked directly at me.

“Your husband’s.””

I closed my eyes.

“But also Rachel’s.””

The room spun.

Both of them.

Both touched it.

Both were connected.

“Detective, what are you saying?””

“I’m saying this was not a random accident.””

He placed a folder on the table.

“We also found financial records.””

I opened it.

Transfers.

Payments.

Names.

Then I saw one that made my blood run cold.

A payment from Mark’s account.

To Rachel.

$50,000.

But underneath it was a note.

A note that changed everything.

*For the product.*

I looked up.

“What product?””

Detective Harris didn’t answer.

Because my phone started ringing.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

A man’s voice whispered:

“Lily Carter?””

“Yes.””

“You need to know the truth about your husband.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“I’m the reason Mark is still alive.””
