Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.

Then I turned it back on.

As if somehow the image would change.

As if Rachel would disappear.

As if Mark would suddenly become the man I married.

But the picture stayed.

My husband.

My sister.

A casino parking lot.

Together.

“Lily?””

Mark’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

“How long have you been gambling?””

His expression changed immediately.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“Who told you that?””

That answer hurt more than the lie.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Fear.

I placed the phone on the table.

“Who told me isn’t the question.””

Mark stared at the picture.

His silence said everything.

“You and Rachel?””

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s what everyone says when it is exactly what I think.””

He walked toward me.

“Lily, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice surprised both of us.

“No more explaining things away. No more telling me I’m overreacting.””

I pointed toward the hospital bag sitting near the door.

“Our daughter almost died.””

Mark’s face fell.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He looked away.

That tiny movement destroyed something inside me.

The next morning, I went to Rachel’s house.

I didn’t call first.

I didn’t warn her.

I needed to see her face when she realized I knew.

She opened the door wearing a gray sweater, her hair pulled back neatly.

“Lily?””

I pushed past her.

“We need to talk.””

Her expression tightened.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

“Explain this.””

She looked at the photo.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she sighed.

“I knew this would happen.””

My stomach dropped.

“What would happen?””

She closed the door.

“Mark would ruin everything.””

I stared at her.

“You’re admitting you knew?””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“I knew he had problems.””

“Problems?””

“He owed money.””

“How much?””

She looked away.

“Too much.””

My hands started shaking.

“And you helped him?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Why?””

Her eyes became wet.

“Because I thought I was saving him.””

I stepped back.

“You helped my husband hide gambling debts.””

“Yes.””

“You were involved with our money.””

“Yes.””

“And then you made my daughter a drink.””

Her face changed.

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

Too instantly.

“I would never hurt Emma.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Rachel looked down at her hands.

“The night before the party, Mark came to me.””

“What did he want?””

“Money.””

“How much?””

She swallowed.

“Fifty thousand dollars.””

I felt sick.

“For what?””

“He said he had one last debt.””

“One last?””

Rachel nodded.

“He promised if I helped him, everything would end.””

I walked closer.

“And did it?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

The room became silent.

“Why did you say you were next to him when you made the lemonade?””

Rachel froze.

I watched her carefully.

“I never told you that.””

My blood went cold.

“You told police.””

She looked confused.

“No, I didn’t.””

“Rachel…”

“I told them I made the lemonade alone.””

The air left my lungs.

Someone was lying.

Someone had changed the story.

“Who said you were with him?””

Rachel stood up.

“Lily, you need to leave.””

“What?””

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“Then explain it.””

She walked to the window and looked outside.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“Mark is not just in debt.””

I waited.

“He borrowed money from people who don’t forgive.””

A car passed outside.

Neither of us moved.

“Who?””

Rachel whispered:

“People who wanted him gone.””

My phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Mrs. Carter, where are you?””

“At my sister’s house.””

There was a pause.

“Are you with Rachel?””

“Yes. Why?””

His voice became serious.

“You need to leave that house.””

My heart started racing.

“Why?””

“We found something under your husband’s driver seat.””

I looked at Rachel.

“What?””

“A vial.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What kind of vial?””

The detective hesitated.

“The same sedative found in Emma’s blood.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

I couldn’t move.

Then Detective Harris said the words that changed everything.

“Mrs. Carter, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“We also found evidence that someone has been selling that substance.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who?””

The detective took a breath.

“We’re still investigating.””

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

Not from the detective.

Not from the unknown caller.

From Mark.

Only five words.

*Don’t trust Rachel. She knows.*

I looked at my sister.

May you like

She looked back at me.

And for the first time in my life, I wondered if the person standing closest to me was the person I should fear the most.
