Chapter 19: The Last Person I Suspected

Nobody spoke.

The silence in that apartment was heavier than any confession.

“The person standing closest to you.””

Evelyn’s words stayed in the air.

I looked at Rachel.

She looked terrified.

I looked at Mark.

His face had gone pale.

And then I looked at myself in the reflection of the dark window.

Because suddenly, I understood.

The cruelest secrets are not the ones hidden from you.

They are the ones hidden inside the people you never thought to question.

“Who?”” I whispered.

Evelyn looked at me.

“I can’t say.””

My anger exploded.

“No.””

Everyone stepped back.

“No more.””

My voice shook.

“My daughter almost died. My family destroyed itself. My father died protecting a secret. And everyone keeps telling me there is one more thing I need to know.””

I pointed toward the door.

“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at Mark.

And that small movement was enough.

My heart stopped.

“Mark?””

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Why did she look at you?””

“Because she knows I was involved.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Mark stepped forward.

“Lily, listen to me.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“I have listened to you for years.””

My voice cracked.

“And every time I did, I lost another piece of my life.””

Mark looked devastated.

But I couldn’t let that matter.

Not anymore.

“Was it you?””

“No.””

“Were you protecting someone?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

“Who?””

Mark closed his eyes.

“My mother.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rachel looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Mark looked at me.

“My mother was Evelyn’s sister.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“This makes no sense.””

Mark’s voice was quiet.

“My family was connected to yours long before I met you.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

“My mother worked with your mother.””

The pieces started moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“My mother was part of the network.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew.””

“I knew pieces.””

“Enough to hide it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“Why?””

Mark looked at the floor.

“Because when I found out, I tried to destroy it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Like everyone else.””

“I mean it.””

“Then why did you keep secrets?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“Of losing you.””

The words almost worked.

Almost.

But then I remembered Emma.

“I lost myself because of your secrets.””

Mark nodded.

“I know.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Lily, there’s something you need to understand.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The person who changed Emma’s drink was not trying to hurt her.””

“Who was it?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Mark.””

The room exploded.

Rachel gasped.

I couldn’t move.

Mark looked down.

“No.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“No.””

Mark’s eyes filled with tears.

“Lily, listen.””

“You changed it?””

“No.””

“Then why did she say that?””

“Because I changed the drink before the birthday.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

He swallowed.

“I replaced the sedative.””

My blood ran cold.

“You replaced it?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

“A harmless substance.””

I couldn’t understand.

“Why?””

“Because I knew Rachel’s plan.””

Rachel looked at him.

“You knew?””

Mark nodded.

“I found out she was trying to expose me.””

“And you stopped her?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I tried to protect Emma.””

I shook my head.

“But she still collapsed.””

“Yes.””

“Because the sedative was already there.””

Mark nodded.

“Someone put it in after I changed it.””

Everyone became silent.

“Who?””

Mark looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Mark looked ashamed.

“Because I was guilty.””

“For what?””

“For everything before that.””

The room went quiet.

“I sold the substances.””

“I lied.””

“I stole money.””

“I hurt people.””

He looked at me.

“But I didn’t hurt Emma.””

I wanted to hate him.

But for the first time, I saw something different.

Not fear.

Not excuses.

Regret.

Detective Harris received a phone call.

He stepped aside.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He ended the call slowly.

“Mrs. Carter.””

“What?””

“We found the person who added the sedative.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Detective Harris looked toward the doorway.

“The person who has been helping your family’s secrets stay buried for years.””

The door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Calm.

Holding a small vial in her hand.

Evelyn whispered her name.

“No…”

The woman smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry, Lily.””

I stared.

Because I knew her.

Everyone knew her.

She had been at Emma’s birthday.

She had hugged my daughter.

She had brought the cake.

The person who had always been there.

My mother’s closest friend.

The woman who claimed she wanted to protect us.

And then she spoke.

“I didn’t mean for Emma to drink it.””

My voice disappeared.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because your father left one final secret.””

“What secret?””

She smiled.

“The evidence was never hidden.””

May you like

A pause.

“It was inside Emma’s birthday gift.””
