Chapter 18: The Woman Who Kept the Secret
I drove without remembering the road.
My hands gripped the steering wheel.
My mind was somewhere else.
My aunt.
The woman who made Christmas dinner.
The woman who held my hand at my wedding.
The woman who told me my mother was the kindest person she ever knew.
She was alive.
And she knew.
When I arrived at Rachel’s location, Detective Harris was already there.
Rachel stood near the entrance of an old apartment building.
She looked exhausted.
“What happened?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“I found her.””
“Where?””
“Inside.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Her name is Evelyn Carter.””
My aunt.
I felt like I was hearing someone else’s life.
“Why didn’t anyone know she was involved?””
“Because she disappeared after your mother died.””
Rachel looked at me.
“She changed her name.””
“Why?””
“Because she was running.””
We entered the apartment.
The place was empty except for one table.
On it sat a folder.
Rachel looked at me.
“She left this.””
I opened it.
Inside were letters.
My mother’s handwriting.
The first letter began:
*Evelyn, we need to finish what we started.*
I felt sick.
I kept reading.
*Daniel is becoming a problem. He believes he can expose us.*
Detective Harris leaned closer.
“Keep going.””
The next page.
*Michael knows too much. If he continues, we lose everything.*
My father.
My hands shook.
My father wasn’t just investigating.
He was a target.
I turned the page.
Then I saw it.
A date.
The day before my father died.
*Lily cannot know. If she finds the evidence, she becomes the next problem.*
I dropped the papers.
“No.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Lily…”
“My mother wanted me gone?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was written there.
My mother feared me.
Not because I was dangerous.
Because I could reveal everything.
A sound came from behind us.
A door opening.
We turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Gray hair.
But I knew her instantly.
“Aunt Evelyn.””
She looked at me.
And started crying.
“I knew this day would come.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Evelyn Carter, you need to come with us.””
She didn’t move.
Instead, she looked at me.
“Your father loved you.””
My eyes filled with anger.
“Don’t.””
“He did.””
“Then why did everyone lie?””
She lowered her head.
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
“By hiding everything?””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked at Rachel.
Then at me.
“Your mother didn’t poison Emma.””
I froze.
“I didn’t ask that.””
“But you need to know.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who changed the drink was trying to stop your mother’s plan.””
I stared.
“My mother is dead.””
Evelyn nodded.
“But her plan continued.””
The room went silent.
“What plan?””
She took a deep breath.
“To destroy the evidence your father left.””
“And Emma?””
“She was never the target.””
I heard those words again.
But this time, I understood.
Emma wasn’t chosen because she mattered.
She was chosen because I would break.
“What did my mother want?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“She wanted you to find the evidence.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“She wanted you to find it because she knew you would lead everyone to it.””
My stomach turned.
“You’re saying she used me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because your mother knew something nobody else did.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“Your father didn’t hide the final evidence from the network.””
A pause.
“He hid it from you.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Evelyn looked toward the door.
Then back at me.
“Because he discovered the final secret.””
“What secret?””
Her voice dropped.
“The network didn’t end with your mother.””
My heart pounded.
“It continued.””
“With who?””
Evelyn looked at Rachel.
Then at Mark.
Then finally at me.
“The person who has been protecting the secret all these years…”
May you like
She swallowed.
“…is the person standing closest to you right now.””
