Chapter 12: The Target They Never Named
I replayed my father’s final message seven times.
Five words.
That was all.
*The real target was never Emma.*
But somehow, those five words changed everything.
Because if Emma wasn’t the target…
Then what was she?
A mistake?
A warning?
A distraction?
I needed to know.
Detective Harris sat across from me.
“You should go home.””
I looked at him.
“Home?””
“Yes.””
“My daughter almost died.””
“I know.””
“My husband lied to me.””
“I know.””
“My sister hid evidence.””
“I know.””
I leaned forward.
“Then don’t tell me to go home.””
He was quiet.
Then he nodded.
“You’re right.””
He opened the notebook again.
“We need to understand the timeline.””
“Okay.””
“Your father investigates this network.””
“Yes.””
“Mark gets involved.””
“Yes.””
“Rachel helps him.””
“Yes.””
“Then three years later, Emma’s birthday happens.””
I looked down.
“The plan changes.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“Exactly.””
“What was the original plan?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I looked at the notebook.
There was one page folded in the middle.
I opened it.
A name was written there.
Not Mark.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
*Daniel Whitmore.*
“Who is that?””
Detective Harris looked surprised.
“Where did you see that name?””
“Here.””
He leaned closer.
“That’s interesting.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel Whitmore died three years ago.””
Another dead person.
Another impossible name.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Detective Harris searched through records.
“Daniel was connected to several medical companies.””
“Like my father?””
“Yes.””
“And Mark?””
“Yes.””
I felt exhausted.
Everyone led back to the same place.
A world I never knew existed.
That evening, I went back to the hospital.
Emma was awake.
She smiled when she saw me.
“Mommy.””
I sat beside her.
“Hey, baby.””
She looked at my face.
“Are you sad?””
I forced a smile.
“No.””
She studied me.
Kids always know.
“You’re lying.””
I laughed softly.
“You sound like your father.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Is Daddy bad?””
The question broke me.
I took her hand.
“I don’t know.””
It was the most honest answer I had given all week.
She looked down.
“I heard Daddy and Aunt Rachel fighting.””
“When?””
“Before my party.””
“What did they say?””
Emma thought carefully.
“Daddy said, ‘We only have one chance.’”
My heart stopped.
“One chance for what?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then she looked at me.
“But Aunt Rachel said something.””
“What?””
“She said…”
Emma frowned.
“She said, ‘What about Lily?’”
I went still.
“What did Daddy say?””
Emma whispered:
“He said, ‘Lily will finally see the truth.’”
I couldn’t move.
The words from the hidden phone returned.
*Ask your husband what happened three years ago.*
Not:
Ask your husband what he did.
Ask your husband what happened.
Maybe Mark wasn’t only hiding a crime.
Maybe he was hiding a plan.
My phone rang.
Mark.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“Where are you?””
His voice sounded urgent.
“Lily, listen to me.””
“No.””
“You need to leave the hospital.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
“Because they know you found the notebook.””
I looked around.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then Mark whispered:
“The people who killed your father.””
The line went silent for a second.
Then he said:
“And Lily…”
“What?””
“I know who ordered Emma’s birthday surprise.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
May you like
His voice cracked.
“The person you trust the most.””
