Chapter 11: The Notebook of Names

The storage unit smelled like dust and old memories.

Six years of my father’s life packed into a metal room.

Boxes.

Old photographs.

Books he never finished reading.

Things my mother couldn’t throw away.

Things I couldn’t bring myself to open.

Detective Harris stood beside me as workers removed the lock.

“You’re sure this is the place?””

He nodded.

“Your father rented it two months before his death.””

I stared at the door.

“He never told me.””

“He probably didn’t want anyone to know.””

The lock snapped.

The door rolled upward.

And there it was.

Everything he left behind.

I stepped inside.

My father’s handwriting was everywhere.

Labels on boxes.

Notes on folders.

Dates.

Names.

My chest tightened.

“He was preparing.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“For what?””

I touched a box marked:

*IF SOMETHING HAPPENS*

My hands shook.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

A small flash drive.

And a blue notebook.

The notebook.

The one Rachel had hidden.

The one everyone wanted.

I reached for it.

But Detective Harris stopped me.

“Gloves.””

I nodded.

The evidence team examined it first.

Then finally handed it to me.

The cover was worn.

The edges damaged.

But it was real.

My father’s handwriting.

The first page contained only one sentence.

*If you are reading this, they already know I failed.*

I felt tears forming.

My father.

Still trying to protect me.

Even after death.

I turned the page.

Names.

Hundreds of names.

Dates.

Locations.

Transactions.

And near the middle…

Mark Carter.

My husband’s name.

My heart sank.

Next to it:

*Recruitment attempt: successful.*

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

Detective Harris looked at the page.

“What?””

I closed the notebook.

“Nothing.””

He knew I was lying.

But he didn’t push.

On the next page, I found something worse.

A handwritten note.

*Rachel knows more than she admits.*

I closed my eyes.

Everyone was connected.

Everyone.

Except Emma.

My innocent little girl.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I looked up.

Detective Harris was holding the flash drive.

“We need to see what’s on this.””

Back at the station, the files opened.

Videos.

Audio recordings.

Documents.

Then one video appeared.

The date was three years earlier.

I watched my father sitting at a desk.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My hands covered my mouth.

“Hello, Lily.””

His voice filled the room.

“If you’re watching this, I’m gone.””

I started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“I wanted to tell you everything.””

The video shook slightly.

“Mark is involved.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He stared at the screen.

“He was approached because he had access.””

My father continued.

“At first, he refused.””

A pause.

“Then they found his weakness.””

Gambling.

Money.

Desperation.

“He thought he could control them.””

My father sighed.

“He was wrong.””

The video changed.

Another file opened automatically.

A recording.

A conversation.

Mark’s voice.

And Rachel’s.

Three years earlier.

“I can’t do this anymore,” Mark said.

“You have to,” Rachel replied.

“They’ll kill me.””

“Then do what they asked.””

“What about Lily?””

A long silence.

Then Rachel said:

“She can never know.””

The recording ended.

I sat frozen.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“They were involved long before Emma’s birthday.””

I nodded slowly.

Then another file opened.

One last message from my father.

May you like

This time, only five words.

*The real target was never Emma.*
