Chapter 9: The Money They Never Wanted Me to Find

I barely slept.
At 7:00 a.m., I was already sitting at my kitchen table, examining the payment records Rachel had sent me.
Ninety-six thousand dollars.
Eighteen months.
The same period during which Danielle repeatedly told me she had no income and needed money for personal expenses.
I called Rachel.
"Where did this information come from?""
"Laura provided copies of the trust's internal payment records. She says Gloria used the company account to pay Danielle for administrative consulting.""
"Did Danielle actually perform any work?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Why would she hide the payments?""
"Possibly because the records were being used to support a claim of financial dependency. But we shouldn't assume the motive until we verify everything.""
I looked at the payment descriptions.
Every month, Danielle had received between $4,000 and $6,000.
Some payments were labeled as administrative consulting.
Others were described as project management.
I remembered Danielle telling me she was bored at home and considering taking a part-time job.
Apparently, she had already been earning money.
I sent the records to my accountant's replacement, an independent forensic accounting firm Rachel recommended.
Then I called Laura.
She answered immediately.
"Mr. Brooks?""
"Laura, I need to understand these payments.""
She sighed.
"I was hoping you would ask.""
"Did Danielle work for Gloria's company?""
"Sometimes. She helped with social media posts, arranged appointments, and reviewed invoices. But it wasn't a full-time job.""
"Was she paid ninety-six thousand dollars for that?""
"No. That's why I was uncomfortable.""
"What do you mean?""
Laura lowered her voice.
"Some months, Danielle barely came into the office. Gloria told me to record the payments as consulting expenses anyway.""
I sat straighter.
"Did Danielle know?""
"I believe so. She occasionally called to ask whether her payment had arrived.""
I closed my eyes.
"Do you have proof?""
"I have the emails.""
"Please send them to Rachel.""
"I will.""
After ending the call, I stared at the payment records.
For years, Danielle had told me she was financially dependent on me.
Meanwhile, her mother had been paying her through a company account.
And that same company was listed as the organizer of the family trust attempting to gain access to my assets.
At ten, I met Rachel and the forensic accountant, Michael Reed.
Michael was a quiet man in his forties who spoke carefully and took extensive notes.
He reviewed the documents for almost an hour.
Finally, he looked up.
"There's something interesting here.""
"What?""
"The trust account appears to have received money from several sources.""
He turned his laptop toward me.
"Some deposits came from Gloria's property management business. Others came from Kevin's company.""
"Why would Kevin transfer money into the family trust?""
Michael enlarged the transaction list.
"That's what we need to determine.""
Rachel leaned forward.
"Can you identify the purpose of the transfers?""
"Not from the bank descriptions alone. But there are several payments labeled as consulting reimbursements and family distributions.""
I pointed to one entry.
"$18,000 from Kevin's company. What is that?""
Michael checked the supporting records.
"According to the ledger, it's an administrative reimbursement.""
"For what?""
"There's no invoice attached.""
Rachel exchanged a look with me.
Michael continued.
"There are also repeated transfers from the trust into Danielle's account. Some appear to be payments for consulting work. Others are described as family support.""
I sat back.
"Could the money have been routed through the trust to hide where it came from?""
Michael answered carefully.
"It's possible, but we need more records before drawing that conclusion.""
Rachel nodded.
"We'll request the underlying account statements and preserve the originals.""
I looked at the screen.
"There's something else. Kevin's business owes almost four hundred thousand dollars.""
Michael scrolled through the transactions.
"Then these records may help establish whether the trust was being used to move funds between related parties.""
Rachel turned toward me.
"Marcus, this is no longer just a marital dispute. We need to keep your business records separate from your personal investigation and let the appropriate professionals handle the financial review.""
I agreed.
That afternoon, I received a call from Danielle.
I almost let it go to voicemail.
But I answered.
"Hello?""
"Marcus?""
Her voice was trembling.
"Can we meet?""
"Why?""
"I need to tell you something.""
I looked at the clock.
"Where?""
"The house. Please.""
I agreed to meet her at six.
When I arrived, she was sitting at the kitchen table.
There were two cups of tea in front of her.
She looked exhausted.
"Thank you for coming.""
I placed my keys on the counter.
"What do you need to tell me?""
She pushed a folder across the table.
"These are the payment records from Mom's company.""
I opened it.
There were bank transfers, invoices, and handwritten notes.
"Why are you giving me these?""
"Because I don't want you finding out from someone else.""
I looked at her.
"That's a little late.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
I flipped through the documents.
"Did you receive ninety-six thousand dollars?""
"Yes.""
"Why did you tell me you had no income?""
She stared at her hands.
"Mom said the money needed to stay separate from our household finances.""
"Why?""
"She said it was for family emergencies.""
"Your family emergencies?""
Danielle nodded.
I laughed softly.
"So you were earning money while asking me to pay your personal expenses and your family's bills.""
She began crying.
"I know how it looks.""
"It looks exactly like what it is.""
She wiped her face.
"I didn't think it was wrong at the time.""
"Why not?""
"Because Mom told me the trust was a way of protecting everyone.""
"Protecting them from what?""
She looked up.
"From you.""
I froze.
"Explain.""
Danielle took a deep breath.
"Mom believed you would eventually stop supporting everyone. She thought your business would become more important than the family. She wanted a separate fund that nobody could touch.""
I stared at her.
"And you agreed?""
"I thought it was reasonable to have savings.""
"Then why didn't you save your own money?""
She looked away.
"Because Mom said the money needed to stay under the trust.""
I leaned forward.
"Danielle, did you know the trust was being funded by Kevin's company?""
Her expression changed.
"Some of it.""
"How much?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you know about the payments being recorded as consulting expenses?""
She shook her head.
"Not all of them.""
I closed the folder.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
She looked directly at me.
"Because Mom has started threatening me.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"She says if I don't support her, she'll tell everyone I was the one who arranged the financial documents.""
I stared at her.
"Did you arrange them?""
She lowered her head.
"I helped.""
"How?""
"I sent her your financial information. I gave her copies of some old business documents. I told her which accounts you used for household expenses.""
My chest tightened.
"And the divorce plan?""
She nodded slowly.
"I knew she was discussing it.""
"Did you intend to leave me?""
She hesitated.
"I thought about it.""
The answer hurt more than I expected.
I looked down at the folder.
"Danielle, did you ever love me?""
She began sobbing.
"Yes.""
"Then how did you let this happen?""
She reached across the table.
"I was afraid. Mom kept telling me that I would be left with nothing if you ever decided to walk away.""
I pulled my hand back.
"Instead, you helped her prepare to take something from me before I could leave.""
She covered her face.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the refrigerator humming.
Then she whispered:
"There's something else.""
I looked at her.
"What now?""
She opened her handbag and removed a small USB drive.
"Mom gave me this two weeks ago.""
"What is it?""
"Copies of the trust records. She told me to keep them somewhere safe.""
"Why are you giving them to me?""
"Because I think she has been lying to everyone.""
I took the drive but didn't open it.
"About what?""
Danielle swallowed.
"Kevin's debt.""
I stared at her.
"What about it?""
She lowered her voice.
"Mom told me Kevin owed four hundred thousand dollars. But I found a statement showing the original loan was much smaller.""
"How much?""
"One hundred and twenty thousand.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Where did the rest come from?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know. But Mom said the trust had been paying some of his expenses, and the money needed to be replaced before anyone noticed.""
I looked at the USB drive.
"Who was responsible for managing the trust?""
Danielle hesitated.
"Mom.""
"And you?""
"I was listed as the financial administrator.""
I closed my eyes.
This was becoming more complicated by the hour.
I stood.
"I'm taking this to Rachel.""
Danielle nodded.
"Marcus?""
I stopped.
"Yes?""
"Mom doesn't know I gave you that drive.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Because she told me if anyone ever investigated the trust, she would make sure I took the blame.""
I left without answering.
At Rachel's office, we opened the files with the forensic accountant present.
There were bank statements, internal spreadsheets, payment instructions, and several emails.
Michael spent nearly two hours reviewing the information.
Then he stopped at one spreadsheet.
"Rachel, Marcus, you need to see this.""
He turned the laptop around.
The spreadsheet contained a list of deposits and withdrawals from the family trust.
Michael pointed to a column labeled Outstanding Family Obligations.
The total was $396,000.
But the supporting transactions showed that a substantial portion of that amount had been transferred into accounts controlled by Gloria.
Not Kevin.
Not Melissa.
Gloria.
Rachel leaned closer.
"Can you trace the transfers?""
"Some of them. There are payments to a property company, a personal investment account, and a separate savings account.""
I stared at the screen.
"Who owns the savings account?""
Michael opened the account details.
Then he went completely still.
"Marcus, this is interesting.""
"What?""
He enlarged the name.
The account was registered to Gloria Brooks.
But the beneficiary designation listed another person.
Someone who had nothing to do with Danielle's family support plan.
Someone whose name had appeared on the proposed divorce settlement.
I leaned forward.
"Who is that?""
Michael pointed to the screen.
*Peter Lawson.*
My former accountant.
Rachel immediately called her investigator.
And just as she began explaining what we'd found, my phone rang.
It was Danielle.
I answered.
Her voice was barely audible.
"Marcus, Mom knows about the USB drive.""
I stood.
"How?""
"She checked the office security camera. She saw me leaving with the folder.""
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"Are you safe?""
She started crying.
"Marcus, she's coming here.""
I looked at Rachel.
"Call the authorities if she threatens you," I told Danielle.
"Don't confront her.""
Then I heard another voice in the background.
Gloria.
"WHERE IS THE DRIVE, DANIELLE?""
My wife screamed.
The call went dead.
I grabbed my keys.
But before I could leave, Rachel's phone rang.
She listened for a few seconds.
Then her expression changed.
She slowly lowered the phone.
"Marcus, we have a serious problem.""
"What?""
"Peter Lawson just contacted the investigator. He says Gloria paid him to prepare a financial report.""
I stared at her.
"What report?""
Rachel looked at the computer screen.
"The report that was supposed to support Danielle's divorce settlement.""
She paused.
"And he claims Gloria promised him something in return.""
"What?""
Rachel's voice dropped.
"Ten percent of whatever money Danielle received.""
I felt sick.
But the next sentence was worse.
"Peter also says he has the original instructions showing that Gloria intended to make Danielle appear financially dependent on you, even though she was secretly receiving payments from the trust.""
I stared at the screen.
The entire family support arrangement.
The fake financial dependency.
The attempted property transfer.
The divorce settlement.
It was all connected.
And now we finally had evidence of who had designed the plan.
Rachel grabbed her coat.
"Marcus, we're going to Danielle's house. But before we go, I want you to understand something.""
"What?""
She looked directly at me.
"Your wife may have helped create this plan, but your mother-in-law appears to have been controlling the money from the beginning.""
I looked at my phone.
No new messages.
No answer when I called Danielle again.
Then a notification appeared.
It was a photograph from her.
The image showed Gloria standing in our kitchen, holding the USB drive's empty case.
Beneath it were five words:
*MOM FOUND THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
And in the corner of the photograph, I could see a second document lying on the table.
It carried my signature.
May you like
This time, it wasn't a bank authorization.
It was a document transferring ownership of my commercial property.
