Chapter 2: The Family Had Been Planning My Financial Funeral

I stared at Kevin's message for almost a full minute.

The photograph showed a printed document resting on what looked like Gloria's kitchen counter.

At the top were the words:

*BROOKS FAMILY FINANCIAL SUPPORT PLAN — 2027.*

I zoomed in.

There were several names, monthly amounts, and handwritten notes.

Danielle's name appeared at the top.

Gloria's name was directly underneath.

Then came Kevin, Melissa, Uncle Raymond, and several other relatives.

I scrolled through the photograph.

The document wasn't a list of holiday expenses.

It was a proposed monthly payment schedule.

Gloria: $5,000.

Kevin: $3,500.

Melissa: $2,500.

Uncle Raymond: $2,000.

And the list continued.

At the bottom was a handwritten total.

*$24,500 per month.*

My stomach tightened.

Twenty-four thousand five hundred dollars.

Every month.

I immediately called Kevin.

He answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"What is this?""

There was a long silence.

"Where did you get that document?"" I asked.

"Mom left it on the kitchen counter when I went to get my jacket.""

"Why are you sending it to me?""

"Because I think you should know what's happening.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"Explain.""

Kevin sighed.

"Look, man, I know tonight was bad. But you need to understand that Mom and Danielle have been discussing this for months.""

"Discussing what?""

"Getting you to agree to a monthly family allowance.""

I laughed once, but there was nothing funny about it.

"An allowance?""

"Yeah. They think it would be easier than asking you for money every time someone needs something.""

"How generous of them.""

"Marcus, I'm serious.""

"So am I. Did you know about this?""

Kevin hesitated.

"Mom mentioned it.""

"Did you participate?""

Another silence.

"Kevin.""

"Okay, yes. I told her what I needed.""

I looked at the document again.

"You asked for thirty-five hundred dollars a month?""

"My business isn't doing great.""

"You drive a luxury SUV.""

"It's leased.""

"And you spent nearly a thousand dollars on champagne tonight.""

"That was different.""

"How?""

Kevin couldn't answer.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I sat in my car, watching people walk through the restaurant's glass entrance.

Inside, my wife was probably still shouting.

I could imagine Gloria telling everyone how disrespectful I was.

But something else bothered me more.

The document had been prepared months earlier.

That meant tonight wasn't an isolated incident.

It was part of a plan.

I drove home.

Our house was dark when I arrived.

Danielle's car wasn't there.

I went straight to my office, turned on the desk lamp, and opened my laptop.

For years, I had managed almost every financial responsibility in our marriage.

Mortgage payments.

Insurance.

Utilities.

Credit cards.

Family transfers.

Even the expensive vacations Danielle arranged for her relatives.

I had never kept track of every dollar because I trusted my wife.

Now I wanted answers.

I opened our joint account.

The first transfer caught my attention.

$8,000 to Gloria.

Then another.

$4,500 to Kevin.

$3,000 to Melissa.

I opened the transaction history.

The amounts continued.

Some were labeled as gifts.

Others were listed as household assistance.

A few had no descriptions at all.

I downloaded the statements from the previous twelve months.

The total was shocking.

I had transferred more than $118,000 to Danielle's relatives over the past year alone.

And that didn't include the dinners, vacations, gifts, or purchases made on my credit cards.

I rubbed my forehead.

Then I heard the front door slam.

Danielle stormed into the office wearing the same red dress from the restaurant.

Her makeup was smudged.

"Are you happy now?""

I didn't look up.

"Good evening to you too.""

"Do you have any idea what you did tonight?""

"Yes. I paid for my own meal.""

She threw her purse onto the sofa.

"You humiliated me in front of my entire family!""

I turned my laptop toward her.

"What's this?""

She glanced at the screen.

Her face changed.

"Why are you looking through our accounts?""

"Because I received an interesting photograph.""

She froze.

"From who?""

"Kevin.""

Danielle's jaw tightened.

"That idiot.""

I leaned back.

"Twenty-four thousand five hundred dollars a month. Is that what you've been planning?""

She didn't answer.

"Danielle, I asked you a question.""

She folded her arms.

"Mom has been under a lot of pressure. Kevin's business is struggling. Melissa has children. You know how expensive everything is.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

"Yes, we discussed it.""

"You discussed giving your family almost three hundred thousand dollars a year without asking me?""

She threw her hands into the air.

"We're married! What's yours is mine!""

I stared at her.

"Does that mean what's mine is also your mother's?""

"Don't twist my words.""

"I'm not twisting anything. I'm reading your plan.""

She walked toward my desk and pointed at the screen.

"You're acting like we stole something. We haven't even asked you to sign anything.""

"Yet.""

Danielle's eyes narrowed.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

I clicked on another file.

It was a spreadsheet showing the transfers I'd made to her relatives.

"I've given your family more than a hundred thousand dollars this year.""

She glanced at the total.

Then she shrugged.

"So?""

The word landed harder than any insult.

"So?""

"Marcus, you're successful. You have a business, investments, properties. That money doesn't mean the same thing to you as it does to them.""

I closed the laptop.

"You're right. It doesn't mean the same thing. I worked for it.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Here we go. The hardworking husband speech.""

I stood.

"Danielle, when was the last time you asked me how much pressure I was under?""

She rolled her eyes.

"You're always working. That's your choice.""

"When was the last time you thanked me for supporting your family?""

"Do you want a medal?""

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since Kevin sent the photograph.

"Who prepared that financial support plan?""

Danielle looked away.

"Mom.""

"Who told her my income?""

"You did. You tell me everything.""

"Who told her about my investment properties?""

She hesitated.

"Why does that matter?""

"Because the document includes estimated rental income and the value of my business.""

Her expression changed.

I opened the photograph again.

One line near the bottom contained a handwritten note:

Marcus should agree before the January financial review. Danielle can handle the paperwork.

I pointed at it.

"What paperwork?""

Danielle reached for the laptop.

"Give me that.""

I pulled it away.

"What paperwork, Danielle?""

She took a breath.

"Mom was just trying to organize things.""

"Organize what?""

"Your money!""

The words came out before she could stop them.

We stared at each other.

Then she quickly corrected herself.

"Our family finances.""

I shook my head.

"Those aren't the same thing.""

She picked up her purse.

"You're impossible. I'm going to Mom's.""

"Fine.""

She stopped at the doorway.

"You'll regret treating my family this way.""

I didn't respond.

She slammed the door.

A few minutes later, my phone rang.

It was Kevin again.

I answered.

"Marcus, listen. I need to tell you something else.""

"What now?""

"Mom isn't just planning the monthly payments.""

My grip tightened.

"What do you mean?""

"She's been talking to a lawyer.""

"About what?""

Kevin lowered his voice.

"About making sure Danielle gets control of the money if something happens to your marriage.""

I stood completely still.

"Kevin, what exactly did she tell the lawyer?""

He swallowed.

"She said your marriage was the perfect opportunity to secure the family's future.""

May you like

Then he added something that made my blood run cold.

"Marcus, I think they've already prepared the documents for you to sign.""
