Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Protect My Money

I stared at the fourth name on Rachel's screen.

*Peter Lawson — Certified Public Accountant.*

Peter had been my accountant for almost nine years.

He handled my personal taxes, reviewed my business financial statements, and advised me whenever I considered purchasing another property.

I had trusted him with information I wouldn't have shared with most members of my own family.

And now his name appeared on a proposed divorce settlement as a supporting witness.

"Rachel, what exactly is Peter supposed to witness?""

She enlarged the document.

"According to this draft, he's expected to provide a financial assessment supporting Danielle's proposed settlement.""

"Did he agree to that?""

"I don't know yet.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, traffic moved through the downtown streets as if nothing had happened.

My marriage was collapsing.

My brother-in-law had attempted to use my property as collateral.

My mother-in-law had submitted financial documents using my name.

And now my accountant was potentially involved in a plan to take part of my assets.

"Call him," I said.

Rachel shook her head.

"Not yet. We need to approach this carefully. First, I'll send a formal request for information through the appropriate channels. We also need to preserve the original document and verify its source.""

I nodded.

"Do whatever you need to do.""

At 4:30 p.m., I returned to my office.

Peter was already there.

He stood beside my desk holding a thick folder.

"Marcus, we need to talk.""

I looked at him.

"About the divorce settlement?""

His face changed.

"So you've seen it.""

I slowly closed my office door.

"Sit down, Peter.""

He remained standing.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

Peter placed the folder on my desk.

"Danielle contacted me about two months ago. She said you were considering restructuring your assets and wanted an independent financial assessment.""

"That isn't true.""

"I know that now.""

"Did you prepare a financial statement for her?""

He hesitated.

"Yes.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Without telling me?""

"She said you had authorized her to coordinate the process.""

"Did you verify that?""

Peter looked down.

"No.""

I stared at him.

Nine years.

Nine years of trust, professional fees, and confidential conversations.

All of it apparently meant less than a phone call from my wife.

"What information did you give her?""

"Your business valuation, rental income estimates, and the general breakdown of your investment portfolio.""

"Did you give her my account numbers?""

"No. I didn't provide bank credentials or access information.""

"Did you sign anything?""

Peter took a breath.

"I signed a preliminary financial assessment.""

I sat down.

"Peter, do you understand how serious this is?""

"Yes.""

"Your assessment appears in a proposed divorce settlement.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"I didn't know she intended to use it that way.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed financial summaries, property valuations, and a document titled:

*Marital Asset Overview — Confidential.*

The estimated value of my assets was listed at $4.8 million.

I looked at Peter.

"Where did this number come from?""

"Your records from the last annual review.""

"That's outdated.""

"I know.""

"Some of those properties have been refinanced. My company has acquired new contracts. The numbers are wrong.""

Peter nodded.

"Danielle asked for a preliminary estimate.""

"Why?""

He remained silent.

Then he said, "She wanted to know what her financial position might look like if you separated.""

I laughed bitterly.

"She was calculating the price of leaving me.""

Peter looked uncomfortable.

"Marcus, I made a mistake. I should have contacted you directly.""

"Yes, you should have.""

He pushed another document toward me.

"This is something else you need to see.""

It was an email from Gloria.

Peter, we need the valuation to show that Danielle would face significant financial hardship if the marriage ended. Please include the household expenses and the standard of living she's accustomed to.

Peter had replied:

I can provide historical figures, but I cannot manufacture financial conclusions or guarantee any particular legal outcome.

Gloria's next message was even more disturbing.

Then give us the highest reasonable household expense estimate. Danielle needs enough support to maintain the lifestyle she's been living.

I looked at Peter.

"Did you do it?""

He lowered his eyes.

"I included the actual household expenses from the previous year.""

"Did you know most of those expenses included payments to her relatives?""

"No.""

I pulled up the spreadsheet Rachel had prepared.

Then I showed him the transfers to Gloria, Kevin, and Melissa.

Peter stared at the screen.

"Oh, my God.""

"Exactly.""

I pointed to the monthly expense section in his report.

"They used my generosity as evidence that my wife requires that much money to maintain her lifestyle.""

Peter slowly sat down.

"I didn't realize.""

I closed the folder.

"You're no longer handling my finances.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

"And I want every document, email, and communication relating to Danielle or Gloria preserved.""

"Of course.""

As Peter left, I felt a strange mixture of anger and exhaustion.

I had spent years believing that success meant being able to provide security for everyone around me.

Now I understood that some people saw security as something they could take.

That evening, Rachel called.

"Marcus, I've verified the attorney's involvement.""

"What did you find?""

"The attorney confirms that Gloria and Danielle discussed a possible divorce settlement. However, the attorney says no final agreement was signed and no court filing has been made.""

"Did Peter provide the valuation?""

"Yes. The attorney received it as preliminary financial information.""

"Can we use that?""

"Potentially, but we need the underlying records and proper authentication.""

I sat at my desk.

"What's next?""

"Tomorrow, I want you to attend a meeting with me. The attorney representing Gloria and Danielle has agreed to clarify the documents and explain the financial arrangement they were proposing.""

"Will Danielle be there?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the wedding photograph beside my computer.

"Good.""

The next morning, I arrived at Rachel's office at nine.

Danielle was already sitting in the conference room.

She looked pale.

Gloria sat beside her, wearing a cream-colored suit and carrying a designer handbag.

Kevin was there too.

He avoided my eyes.

Across the table sat a man in his fifties with a leather briefcase.

He introduced himself as Arthur Mills, the attorney who had been advising Gloria.

Rachel opened the meeting.

"Mr. Mills, we have several concerns regarding the documents your client provided to financial institutions.""

Arthur adjusted his glasses.

"My client has informed me that there may have been a misunderstanding.""

Rachel slid the disputed authorization across the table.

"Is this your office's document?""

Arthur examined it.

"Yes. We prepared the draft at Gloria's request.""

"Did Marcus Brooks authorize its submission?""

Arthur looked toward Gloria.

"I was informed that Danielle had permission to coordinate the household arrangements.""

Rachel remained calm.

"That wasn't my question.""

Arthur closed the folder.

"Then I cannot confirm that.""

I looked at Gloria.

"Did you tell him I agreed?""

She crossed her arms.

"Danielle told me you would eventually agree.""

"That's not the same thing.""

Kevin suddenly leaned forward.

"Marcus, can we please stop arguing about technicalities?""

I turned toward him.

"Technicalities? You tried to borrow money against my property.""

He looked down.

Arthur cleared his throat.

"Perhaps we should focus on resolving the family dispute.""

Rachel placed another document on the table.

The draft divorce settlement.

Danielle began crying.

Gloria immediately reached for her hand.

Rachel pointed to a paragraph.

"This proposal requests monthly financial support and a transfer of certain property interests. Who instructed your office to prepare these terms?""

Arthur answered carefully.

"Danielle and Gloria discussed their concerns about Danielle's financial security.""

I looked at my wife.

"Six weeks before the dinner?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

She finally looked at me.

"That you would stop supporting everyone.""

The room went silent.

Then Rachel asked a question that nobody seemed prepared for.

"Mr. Mills, did your office receive any documents suggesting that Marcus had already agreed to transfer his commercial property into the proposed family trust?""

Arthur hesitated.

Gloria's face turned pale.

Kevin suddenly sat upright.

May you like

And Danielle whispered:

"Mom, you said nobody would find that document.""
