Chapter 8: The Secret Contract Hidden Behind the Family Trust

Rachel didn't move.
Neither did I.
The sentence had come from Danielle's mouth, but everyone in the room had heard it.
"Nobody would find what document?"" Rachel asked.
Danielle covered her face.
Gloria immediately stood.
"That's enough. We're leaving.""
Rachel remained seated.
"Mrs. Brooks, nobody is forcing you to stay. But if you leave, we will continue addressing these matters through the appropriate legal process.""
Gloria glared at her.
"You people are turning a family misunderstanding into a criminal investigation.""
Rachel folded her hands.
"That decision isn't ours to make. We are documenting what happened and protecting our client's interests.""
I looked at Danielle.
"What document?""
She shook her head.
"Marcus, please.""
"Your mother said nobody would find it. What is she talking about?""
Kevin suddenly stood.
"Mom, just tell him.""
Gloria turned sharply.
"Sit down, Kevin!""
He ignored her.
"You told me the contract was already prepared.""
Gloria's face became rigid.
Arthur Mills slowly closed his briefcase.
"I think I need to understand exactly what document we're discussing.""
Rachel nodded.
"So do we.""
Danielle began crying.
"Mom wanted to transfer the commercial property into the family trust.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"My commercial property?""
She nodded.
"She said it would be temporary.""
I looked at Gloria.
"How?""
Gloria lifted her chin.
"Marcus, you have several properties. This one generates rental income. The family trust would simply manage the asset and distribute the proceeds.""
I stared at her.
"Without my permission?""
"You would eventually receive the benefits.""
"From my own property?""
She sighed impatiently.
"You keep acting like we're trying to rob you.""
I leaned forward.
"Then show me the contract.""
Gloria didn't answer.
Kevin reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.
"Here.""
Gloria lunged toward him.
"Kevin, don't!""
He placed it on the table.
Rachel opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a proposed property transfer agreement.
My commercial property was listed as the asset to be transferred.
The proposed receiving entity was the Brooks Family Security Trust.
There was also a schedule showing projected annual rental income.
I recognized the numbers.
Someone had copied them from my private investment spreadsheet.
Rachel turned to the final page.
The signature section was blank.
"Has this document been signed?"" she asked.
Kevin shook his head.
"No. Mom said they were waiting for Marcus.""
I looked at Gloria.
"Why did the bank receive an application using my property if this agreement was never signed?""
She pressed her lips together.
Kevin answered instead.
"Because Mom wanted to see whether the property could qualify as security before the transfer.""
I stared at him.
"You submitted a loan application using an asset you didn't own?""
Kevin looked uncomfortable.
"Mom said it was only a preliminary inquiry.""
Rachel immediately wrote something down.
Arthur looked increasingly alarmed.
"Mrs. Brooks, I was not aware that anyone had attempted to use the property in a financing application.""
Gloria turned toward him.
"Arthur, don't pretend you don't understand how these things work.""
He shook his head.
"Preparing a proposed trust agreement is one thing. Submitting financial applications without the owner's authorization is another.""
Gloria's expression hardened.
"You were paid to prepare documents, not lecture me.""
Arthur closed his briefcase.
"I was paid to provide legal advice. I will not represent anyone in an arrangement involving false statements or unauthorized signatures.""
For the first time, Gloria seemed genuinely shaken.
She looked toward Danielle.
"Tell them the truth.""
Danielle was trembling.
"What truth?""
"Tell them Marcus knew about the property plan.""
I looked at my wife.
"Did I?""
Danielle shook her head.
"No.""
Gloria's voice rose.
"You promised me you would convince him!""
Danielle started crying harder.
"I thought you were going to ask him!""
"I did ask him! You said he would eventually agree!""
Rachel raised one hand.
"Let's keep the discussion orderly.""
But Gloria had lost control.
She turned toward me.
"You think you're innocent in all this? You made us dependent on you!""
I stared at her.
"I never asked you to depend on me.""
"You bought Danielle expensive things. You paid our bills. You took us on vacations. You made everyone believe we would always be taken care of!""
"I did those things because I wanted to.""
"And now you're taking them away!""
I slowly shook my head.
"No, Gloria. I'm simply refusing to let you take more.""
The room fell silent.
Rachel collected copies of the documents.
"Until these issues are resolved, all parties should avoid making further financial representations involving Marcus's assets. Any disputed document should be preserved in its original form.""
Arthur nodded.
"I agree.""
The meeting ended shortly afterward.
As everyone stood, Kevin approached me.
"Marcus, can we talk outside?""
I glanced at Rachel.
She nodded.
We stepped into the hallway.
Kevin looked exhausted.
"I know you hate me right now.""
"I don't hate you, Kevin.""
"Then help me.""
I almost laughed.
"You're still asking me for money?""
He rubbed his face.
"My business is in serious trouble. I have employees. Suppliers.
Rent. If the lender pulls out, everything collapses.""
"Then speak to your lender.""
"They want additional security.""
"Find legitimate security.""
He lowered his voice.
"Mom said Danielle could get the money through the divorce settlement.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"She said if you separated, Danielle would have enough financial leverage to help the family.""
I felt cold.
"So the divorce plan was connected to your loan?""
Kevin nodded reluctantly.
"Mom thought it would be easier to secure the money once Danielle had access to the settlement.""
I took a step closer.
"Did Danielle know?""
"She knew we needed money. I don't know what she agreed to.""
I looked at him for a long moment.
"Kevin, you have a business. You have employees. You have responsibilities. But none of those things give you the right to use my property.""
He looked down.
"I know.""
"Do you?""
He didn't answer.
I returned to Rachel's office.
Danielle was still inside.
Gloria had already left.
My wife stood when she saw me.
"Marcus, please. I need to talk to you alone.""
Rachel gathered her papers.
"I'll give you ten minutes. But don't sign or agree to anything.""
She left the room.
Danielle sat across from me.
"I never wanted things to go this far.""
I looked at her.
"Then why didn't you stop them?""
She wiped her eyes.
"Mom kept telling me that you were going to abandon us. She said you were becoming selfish because your business was growing and you didn't need the family anymore.""
"Did you believe her?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you want a divorce?""
She stared at the table.
"I wanted financial security.""
"That's not an answer.""
She finally looked up.
"I was afraid that if you ever left, I'd have nothing.""
I felt a dull ache in my chest.
"Danielle, we were married. You had a home. You had a life. You had every opportunity to build something of your own.""
"You don't understand. Everyone depended on me.""
I shook my head.
"No. Everyone depended on my money.""
She began crying again.
Then she said something unexpected.
"There's another reason Mom wanted the trust.""
I waited.
"She was afraid Kevin would lose everything. He owes more money than he told us.""
"How much?""
Danielle hesitated.
"Almost four hundred thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"And the loan guarantee?""
"That was only part of it.""
"How much more?""
She whispered, "I don't know.""
I stood.
"Then you need to find out.""
She grabbed my hand.
"Marcus, please. We can start over.""
I gently pulled away.
"I don't know if there's anything left to start over with.""
I walked out.
That evening, Rachel sent me an update.
The bank had officially rejected the unauthorized authorization request and referred the disputed documents for further review.
The lender connected to Kevin's proposed commercial financing had also suspended its application pending verification of the property ownership information.
But the most important discovery came from an email attachment Arthur had provided after the meeting.
It was a message Gloria had sent Danielle three weeks before our year-end dinner.
Once Marcus refuses to cooperate, we will have everything we need to show that he has abandoned his family responsibilities. Danielle can then proceed with the separation. The dinner will help establish that he has always supported the family and that stopping now would create financial hardship.
I read the message twice.
The dinner.
The public humiliation.
The $7,846 bill.
It hadn't been spontaneous.
Gloria had planned to use my refusal to pay as evidence that I was suddenly abandoning a family I had supported for years.
I forwarded the email to Rachel.
Then I received a call from an unknown number.
A woman introduced herself as Laura Chen, a former office manager at Gloria's small property management company.
"Mr. Brooks, I'm sorry to contact you like this.""
"How can I help you?""
"I heard about the documents involving your property.""
I sat down.
"What do you know?""
Laura lowered her voice.
"Gloria asked me to prepare some records several weeks ago. She wanted a list of every payment you had made to the family.""
"Why?""
"She said she needed to prove that your financial support was an established arrangement.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you prepare it?""
"Yes. But there was something else.""
"What?""
"She asked me to change the dates on some of the records so they would look like regular monthly payments rather than occasional gifts.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Did you do it?""
"No. I refused.""
I sat completely still.
Then Laura said:
"Mr. Brooks, I kept the original spreadsheet and the email instructions.""
"Why are you telling me this now?""
"Because Gloria fired me yesterday. And before she did, she told someone that once the divorce was finalized, your wife would receive enough money to keep the entire family comfortable.""
I thanked Laura and asked her to preserve everything.
Then I called Rachel.
She listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she said:
"Marcus, that evidence could be important. But there's one more thing we need to investigate.""
"What?""
"The proposed divorce settlement relies heavily on the claim that Danielle has been financially dependent on you for years.""
I nodded.
"That's true.""
"Not entirely. I just found evidence that Danielle has been receiving money from another source.""
I frowned.
"What source?""
Rachel paused.
"Her mother's company has been paying her a monthly consulting fee.""
I stared at the phone.
"Danielle hasn't worked in years.""
"Apparently, someone has been paying her.""
"How much?""
Rachel sent me a screenshot.
The payments totaled nearly $96,000 over the previous eighteen months.
And the account receiving the money wasn't Danielle's personal account.
May you like
It belonged to a company registered under a name I recognized.
*Brooks Family Security Trust.*
