Chapter 5: Gloria's Plan Was Bigger Than Anyone Imagined

I drove straight to Rachel's office.
By the time I arrived, she had printed both documents and placed them inside a folder.
She stood beside the conference table.
"Sit down, Marcus.""
I didn't sit.
"Show me everything.""
Rachel opened the folder.
The first document was the authorization request submitted under my name.
The second was the recurring transfer instruction.
It requested that $24,500 be transferred every month into an account controlled by a newly established family trust.
The listed beneficiaries were Gloria, Kevin, Melissa, and several other relatives.
I read the account details twice.
"Who owns this account?""
Rachel turned the page.
"The account is registered to an entity called Brooks Family Security Trust.""
"Who established it?""
"Gloria Brooks is listed as the primary organizer. Danielle is named as its financial administrator.""
I stared at the document.
"Can they do this without my signature?""
"Not legally with the authorization they're claiming. The bank flagged the submission because your verification didn't match. That's why the money hasn't moved.""
I exhaled.
"Then what happens now?""
"We formally dispute the documents, preserve the original submissions, and ask the bank to investigate the suspected forgery. We'll also need independent advice on the trust and any other documents that may have been circulated.""
Rachel turned her laptop toward me.
"There is something else.""
She showed me an email chain between Gloria and an attorney.
The first message was dated two months earlier.
Gloria had written:
My daughter is married to a very successful man. He has substantial assets and a profitable company. We want to create a structure that guarantees our family financial stability.
The attorney had replied:
Any arrangement involving Marcus's assets would require his informed consent and appropriate legal documentation.
Gloria's response was chilling.
Danielle can persuade him. He trusts her.
I read it again.
"He trusts her.""
Rachel nodded.
"That's the part I find most concerning.""
I sat down slowly.
The attorney had apparently advised Gloria against attempting to obtain control over assets without my consent.
But the emails didn't stop there.
A week later, Gloria had sent another message.
We don't need to transfer ownership immediately. We only need enough access to manage the monthly funds. Once everything is established, Danielle can handle the rest.
The attorney had responded that the proposal needed to be discussed directly with me.
Then Gloria wrote:
Please prepare the paperwork. We will deal with Marcus separately.
I closed the laptop.
"Has the attorney been informed that these documents were submitted using a questionable signature?""
"Not yet. I want the bank's investigation and our records properly documented first.""
I stared out the window.
"Rachel, I need to ask you something.""
"Go ahead.""
"If Danielle has been involved in this from the beginning, what does that mean for our marriage financially?""
Rachel chose her words carefully.
"It doesn't automatically determine anything. We need to review your state of residence, the ownership history of your assets, your marital agreements, and the source of the funds. Don't assume that every asset is protected simply because it's in your name.""
I nodded.
"Understood.""
"Also, don't move money to hide it. We should protect your accounts through ordinary security procedures and keep accurate records.""
I appreciated her honesty.
For the first time since the dinner, I felt I was dealing with facts instead of accusations.
That afternoon, I returned home.
Danielle was waiting in the living room.
Gloria sat beside her.
Both women looked as if they had rehearsed what they wanted to say.
Danielle stood.
"Finally. We need to talk.""
I placed my briefcase on the floor.
"About the bank documents?""
Gloria immediately interrupted.
"Yes, and I want you to stop making accusations.""
I looked at her.
"Did you submit an authorization request using my name?""
She lifted her chin.
"I was trying to help my daughter.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Gloria folded her arms.
"Danielle told me you were going to support the family. I was simply organizing the arrangement.""
"Did you submit my signature?""
She turned toward Danielle.
"Your husband is being unreasonable.""
Danielle stepped between us.
"Marcus, Mom was only trying to make things easier.""
"By requesting $24,500 every month?""
Danielle's expression tightened.
"That's what we discussed.""
"We?""
"Yes, we!""
I looked directly at her.
"When did I agree to that?""
She opened her mouth but said nothing.
Gloria stood.
"You're making this about money when it's really about family responsibility.""
I let out a slow breath.
"Then explain why your family trust needs access to my bank account.""
Gloria pointed a finger at me.
"Because you've made it impossible for us to plan anything! Every time someone needs help, you make them feel guilty.""
I laughed without humor.
"Your daughter didn't work for two years. I supported her. You needed a kitchen renovation. I paid for it.
Kevin needed money. I paid his bills. Melissa needed school tuition. I helped her.""
I looked around the room.
"What exactly have I refused to do?""
Gloria's face turned red.
"You're supposed to do these things because you're family!""
"No. I'm supposed to decide what I can afford and what I want to give.""
Danielle began crying.
"You're making Mom feel like a criminal.""
I looked at her.
"Did she submit my signature?""
Danielle wiped her cheeks.
"She said the bank needed the paperwork.""
"That wasn't my question.""
She looked toward her mother.
Gloria stepped forward.
"Marcus, listen carefully. We are not going to let you destroy seven years of marriage over a misunderstanding.""
I stared at her.
"Then why did you create a trust without my consent?""
Gloria's voice dropped.
"Because someone has to think about the future.""
"Whose future?""
"The family's!""
"At my expense?""
She slammed her purse onto the coffee table.
"You think you're better than us because you make more money?""
I shook my head.
"No. I think I'm entitled to decide what happens to my own money.""
Gloria turned to Danielle.
"See? I told you he would never understand.""
Danielle walked toward me.
"Marcus, please. We can fix this. Just tell Rachel to withdraw the complaint and let Mom explain everything to the bank.""
I stared at her.
"Why should I withdraw anything?""
"Because this is getting out of control.""
"Your mother submitted a document carrying my signature.""
"She didn't steal anything!""
"She requested access to my account.""
Danielle's voice rose.
"She was doing it for us!""
I took a step back.
"Danielle, I need you to answer one question honestly.""
She looked at me.
"Did you know about the recurring transfer?""
Her eyes shifted toward Gloria.
That was enough.
"How long?"" I asked.
She started crying harder.
"Marcus, please.""
"How long have you known?""
Gloria interrupted.
"Don't answer him. He's trying to trap you.""
I turned toward her.
"You're not helping.""
She grabbed Danielle's arm.
"We're leaving.""
But before they reached the door, my phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered.
"Marcus, we have confirmation from the bank. The recurring transfer was not processed, and the authorization request has been formally disputed.""
"Good.""
"There's another issue. The bank's fraud team found an additional application linked to the same trust.""
"What application?""
"A credit facility.""
I frowned.
"Using what as collateral?""
Rachel paused.
"Your commercial property.""
My blood ran cold.
"That's impossible. I never authorized that.""
"I know. The application includes an ownership document and a financial statement that appear to have been submitted without your approval.""
I looked at Danielle.
She had stopped moving.
Gloria's face had become completely expressionless.
Rachel continued.
"Marcus, I need you to come back to my office. There's a name on the application that you should see.""
"Whose name?""
"Kevin Brooks.""
I ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I looked at my wife.
"Did your brother try to borrow money against my property?""
Danielle covered her mouth.
Gloria immediately stepped forward.
"Kevin was desperate. He needed a business loan.""
"Using my property?""
"Your property is valuable. The bank wouldn't have approved anything without proper verification.""
"That's exactly the problem.""
Danielle started shaking her head.
"Marcus, I swear I didn't know about that.""
I studied her face.
"Then why does your name appear as the financial contact?""
She looked at her mother.
Gloria said nothing.
I picked up my briefcase.
"This conversation is over.""
Danielle grabbed my sleeve.
"Where are you going?""
"To find out how far your family has gone.""
As I reached the door, Gloria shouted behind me.
"Marcus! You'd better think carefully before you destroy everything. Kevin isn't the only person who could be hurt!""
I stopped.
"What does that mean?""
She stared at me.
Then she smiled coldly.
"Ask your wife what she signed last month.""
I turned around.
May you like
Danielle was crying.
And for the first time, I realized there was another document I hadn't seen.
