Chapter 5: What My Father Hid Beneath The Barn
The old barn stood silent beneath the moonlight.
I had walked through those doors thousands of times.
As a child, I had hidden between the hay bales during thunderstorms.
As a teenager, I had helped my father repair the roof.
After he died, my mother and I had kept it exactly the same.
But now I was looking at it differently.
Not as a memory.
As a hiding place.
I grabbed a flashlight and stepped inside.
The smell of old wood and hay filled the air.
“Dad,” I whispered.
The beam of light moved across the floor.
Nothing.
For almost an hour, I searched every corner.
Then I noticed something.
One section of the wooden boards looked newer than the rest.
My heart started beating faster.
I grabbed a crowbar from the wall.
The first board lifted easily.
Underneath was a small metal box.
I stared at it.
My father had hidden something here.
Something important.
I carried it back to the farmhouse.
Margaret was waiting in the kitchen.
“You didn’t sleep,” she said.
“Neither did you.””
She smiled faintly.
“What did you find?””
I placed the box on the table.
Her expression changed.
“Where did that come from?””
“The barn.””
She touched the lid gently.
“Your father’s.””
Inside were documents.
Old property records.
Financial statements.
And a letter.
The date was from six months before my father died.
I unfolded it.
*To whoever finds this,*
*If you are reading this, someone has likely tried to challenge Margaret’s ownership of Willowbrook.*
I stopped breathing.
My father knew.
*I discovered irregular activity involving several people connected to the farm’s legal records. I created a second protection agreement to ensure no one could transfer ownership without my wife and son’s approval.*
I looked at my mother.
“He knew.””
She covered her mouth.
“What?””
“He knew someone might try this.””
I kept reading.
*The original ownership documents are not the ones stored with the attorney. The official copies were changed after my accident. The true documents are hidden here.*
My hands shook.
Daniel.
He wasn’t just involved now.
He had been involved for years.
Margaret read the letter slowly.
Then tears filled her eyes.
“Your father always worried about me.””
“He loved you.””
She touched the paper.
“He never stopped protecting us.””
The next document was a legal agreement.
And at the bottom was something that made my entire body freeze.
A signature.
Daniel Mercer.
From years ago.
My father had accused him of attempting to alter property records.
But there was more.
Attached was a handwritten note.
*Daniel was not acting alone.*
Below that were two names.
Richard Vale.
And Thomas Whitmore.
Stephanie’s father.
I leaned back.
This was bigger than a fake signature.
They had planned this for years.
My phone rang.
Emma.
I answered immediately.
“Emma.””
“Charles, I found something else.””
“What?””
“My father’s emails.””
My grip tightened.
“What emails?””
“Between him and Stephanie.””
I looked at my mother.
“About the farm?””
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“Send them.””
A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.
I opened the first email.
The subject line made my blood turn cold.
*Project Willowbrook — Final Phase.*
The message was from Thomas Whitmore.
*Once Stephanie marries Charles, Margaret will have no reason to resist. The son will be distracted. The old woman will sign whatever we place in front of her.*
I felt sick.
I showed my mother.
She read the words.
Her hand covered her mouth.
“They thought I was stupid.””
“No,” I said quietly.
I looked at the screen.
“They thought you were powerless.””
The next email appeared.
From Stephanie.
*Don’t worry. Charles believes I love him. By the time he understands, the farm will already belong to us.*
My chest tightened.
For two years, I had loved someone who had been planning my family’s destruction.
Then Emma sent one more message.
*Charles, there’s something you need to know about the wedding day. Stephanie didn’t lose control. She did it on purpose.*
I stared at the words.
“What does that mean?””
Before Emma could answer, another notification appeared.
A video file.
Recorded from inside the church.
The message underneath was only five words.
*Watch what happened before the ceremony.*
I pressed play.

And the screen showed Stephanie talking to someone moments before she walked down the aisle.
Someone I never expected.
