Chapter 13: The Investigator Who Disappeared

The man standing behind Stephanie looked older than I remembered.

But I knew him.

Everyone in Willowbrook knew him.

Detective Samuel Hayes.

The investigator assigned to my father’s accident.

The man who told our family twelve years ago that there was nothing suspicious.

The man who closed the case.

I stared at him.

“You’re alive.””

A strange expression crossed his face.

“Charles.””

My voice hardened.

“You disappeared.””

Stephanie stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

“I brought him because you deserve the truth.””

I almost laughed.

Stephanie talking about truth felt like a cruel joke.

“You expect me to believe anything you say?””

Her face tightened.

“I know what I did.””

“No. You know what you got caught doing.””

She looked away.

For once, she didn’t have an answer.

Detective Hayes placed a folder on the table.

“I’m not here to defend Stephanie.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked at the letter in my hand.

“Because your father was right.””

The room went still.

“About what?””

“About everything.””

Margaret stood slowly.

“Samuel…”

His eyes softened.

“Margaret, I’m sorry.””

She looked hurt.

“You told me it was an accident.””

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You weren’t wrong.””

She pointed toward the door.

“You lied.””

Hayes lowered his head.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

He didn’t make excuses.

He didn’t blame anyone else.

He simply admitted it.

“I was pressured.””

“By who?””

He looked at Stephanie.

Then away.

“Thomas Whitmore.””

My anger returned.

“Of course.””

Hayes opened the folder.

“Your father discovered evidence that Thomas and Richard were manipulating property records across several farms. Willowbrook was just the most valuable one.””

He pulled out photographs.

Documents.

Reports.

“The night your father died, he was meeting someone.””

“Who?””

Hayes hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Me.””

I stared.

“You?””

He nodded.

“Your father had proof. He wanted to hand it over.””

“What happened?””

Hayes looked at the floor.

“I arrived late.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel Mercer called me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

“He told me your father had changed his mind. That the meeting was canceled.””

I felt sick.

“Daniel lied.””

“Yes.””

Hayes looked at Margaret.

“And by the time I realized it, your father’s truck had already crashed.””

The room felt colder.

“What did you find at the scene?””

He opened another file.

“Another vehicle.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

“A black sedan.””

Richard.

“Why wasn’t that reported?””

Hayes didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Because Thomas Whitmore made sure it disappeared.””

Stephanie looked uncomfortable.

“You knew?””

I turned toward her.

She looked at Hayes.

“I knew my father was involved.””

The words hung in the air.

Margaret stared at her.

“You knew?””

Stephanie swallowed.

“Yes.””

The betrayal on my mother’s face was something I would never forget.

“You still came into our home?””

Stephanie’s eyes filled.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I looked at her.

“Fix it?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

She stepped closer.

“My father always told me the Hartwells were obstacles.””

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“I believed him until I met your mother.””

Margaret looked confused.

“Why?””

Stephanie looked down.

“Because she was nothing like what he described.””

Silence.

For a moment, I saw something human in her.

Regret.

Then I remembered the church.

The words.

The humiliation.

The lies.

“You still tried to destroy her.””

Stephanie nodded.

“I know.””

Hayes interrupted.

“There’s something else.””

He placed one final document on the table.

A police report.

My father’s accident report.

Except this one was different.

The official version said the truck lost control.

This version said:

*Collision caused by intentional vehicle impact.*

I looked at Hayes.

“Why keep this?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of them?””

He nodded.

“Thomas destroyed my career. He threatened my family.””

I studied him.

“You let us believe my father died by accident.””

His eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Hayes said:

“But there is one thing I never gave them.””

“What?””

He reached into his jacket.

A small recording device.

“Your father’s final message.””

My heart stopped.

“He recorded something before he died.””

I stepped forward.

“Play it.””

Hayes looked at me.

“I need you to understand something first.””

“What?””

“Your father didn’t just expose them.””

May you like

He pressed the device into my hand.

“He discovered who was helping them from inside your own family.””
