Chapter 16: The Accusation That Changed Everything

The police station smelled like cold coffee and old paper.

A place designed to make people feel powerless.

My mother sat behind a glass divider, her hands folded tightly in front of her.

She looked smaller than she had in the farmhouse.

Not because she was weak.

Because someone had spent weeks trying to convince the world she was.

I picked up the phone.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

“Charles.””

Her voice cracked.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Yes, I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Everything I tried to protect you from is happening anyway.””

I pressed the phone against my ear.

“We’re going to fix this.””

She looked toward the floor.

“What if we can’t?””

The question hurt more than anything.

Because my mother was never the person who gave up.

Not when my father died.

Not when the farm struggled.

Not when storms destroyed entire crops.

But now?

They had finally found a way to break her.

I turned toward the officer waiting nearby.

“Who filed the complaint?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Your uncle.””

My stomach tightened.

“Robert.””

He nodded.

“Robert Hartwell claims your mother falsified ownership documents and attempted to transfer Willowbrook illegally.””

I almost laughed.

The person who helped create the fraud was accusing my mother of it.

“Where is he?””

“We don’t know.””

Of course.

He disappeared when the damage was done.

When I left the station, Emma was waiting outside.

She looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t.””

She handed me a folder.

“What’s this?””

“Everything I found about Robert.””

We sat in my car.

The documents showed years of secret payments.

Robert had been receiving money from Richard Vale.

But there was something else.

A company name appeared repeatedly.

*Hartwell Agricultural Holdings.*

I frowned.

“This is my family’s company.””

Emma nodded.

“It was created three months after your father died.””

“By who?””

She looked at me.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“What?””

Before I could react, my phone rang.

Claire.

I answered.

“Charles.””

Her voice was urgent.

“I found something in your father’s notebook.””

“What?””

“A page he hid.””

She paused.

“It explains why your mother created the company.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Send it.””

A minute later, the image arrived.

My father’s handwriting.

*Margaret created Hartwell Agricultural Holdings because Robert was trying to take control of Willowbrook through inheritance laws.*

I stared.

My mother wasn’t helping them.

She was fighting them.

Another line followed.

*She cannot tell Charles. If he knows, he will confront Robert before we have enough evidence.*

I exhaled.

My mother had been protecting me.

Again.

Emma looked over.

“She was trying to stop him.””

“Yes.””

Then why had Robert been able to accuse her?

Because he had prepared.

He had waited.

And he had turned her own protection against her.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Stephanie.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“What?””

Her voice was quiet.

“I know you hate me.””

“That’s not a strong enough word.””

“I deserve that.””

I didn’t expect those words.

“Why are you calling?””

“Because I know where Robert is.””

I sat up.

“Where?””

“He’s meeting Richard tonight.””

“Why tell me?””

A long pause.

“Because I finally understand what my family does to people.””

I almost ended the call.

Then she said:

“Charles, they never planned to let me have Willowbrook.””

I stayed silent.

“What?””

“After the transfer, my father was going to remove me from the project.””

“Why?””

“Because I was never a partner.””

She laughed bitterly.

“I was just another tool.””

For the first time, I heard something real in her voice.

Not manipulation.

Not arrogance.

Pain.

“Where are they meeting?””

She gave me an address.

Then whispered:

“Be careful.””

The call ended.

Emma looked at me.

“You believe her?””

I stared at the road ahead.

“No.””

I started the engine.

“But I believe she knows something.””

That night, we followed Robert’s car to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

Inside, voices echoed.

Richard.

Thomas.

Robert.

And Daniel.

I recorded everything through the cracked door.

Thomas slammed a folder onto a table.

“We need Charles removed before the hearing.””

Richard sounded calm.

“He already looks guilty.””

Robert laughed.

“His own fingerprints are on the documents.””

My blood froze.

They had planned everything.

Daniel spoke.

“And Margaret?””

Thomas answered.

“She’ll take the fall.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

Then Richard said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Good. Once they are both gone, Willowbrook belongs to us.””

I recorded every word.

Then a floorboard creaked beneath my foot.

The voices stopped.

The warehouse went silent.

A light turned on.

Robert looked directly at me.

May you like

And smiled.

“Charles.””
