Chapter 17: The Enemy Who Became An Ally
The warehouse lights burned above us.
I stood frozen.
There was no way out without being seen.
Robert walked closer.
Older than I remembered.
But the same cold eyes.
The same confidence.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
I held up my phone.
“You shouldn’t have said all that.””
His smile faded.
“You recorded us?””
“Yes.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You really think anyone will believe you?””
I looked at him.
“I have your voices.””
He laughed.
“You have a recording of a conversation.””
“And your forged documents.””
“And where are those?””
The question stopped me.
Because he was right.
The original evidence was scattered.
The legal system would demand proof.
Not suspicion.
Robert smiled.
“You’re learning.””
Then something unexpected happened.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Let him go.””
Everyone looked at him.
Richard frowned.
“What?””
Daniel repeated:
“Let him go.””
Thomas laughed.
“After everything?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I’m done.””
The room went quiet.
“You don’t get to be done,” Richard said.
Daniel looked at him.
“I’ve spent twelve years cleaning up your messes.””
“You were paid well.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“And I lost everything that mattered.””
I watched him carefully.
This was the same man who betrayed my father.
But maybe guilt had finally caught him.
Richard stepped closer.
“You forget who owns you.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“No one owns me anymore.””
Then he pulled something from his pocket.
A flash drive.
“I copied everything.””
Thomas’s face changed.
“What did you do?””
“Insurance.””
Richard lunged.
Daniel stepped back.
“Charles, take it.””
I didn’t move.
I didn’t trust him.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because your father was my friend.””
The words hurt.
“Friends don’t betray each other.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“They don’t.””
A noise came from outside.
Police sirens.
Everyone froze.
Robert looked at Richard.
“You called them?””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
Then he looked at me.
“You did.””
I realized immediately.
The recording.
The location.
Someone had tracked my phone.
But not by accident.
Someone wanted this confrontation.
The warehouse doors opened.
Officers rushed inside.
Chaos erupted.
Richard grabbed the folder from the table and ran.
Thomas followed.
Robert disappeared through a side exit.
But Daniel stayed.
He raised his hands.
“I’m not resisting.””
The officers took him away.
I stood there holding the flash drive.
The one thing that could finally expose everything.
Then my phone rang.
Stephanie.
I answered.
“What now?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Charles.””
“What?””
“My father knows about the flash drive.””
I looked around.
“How?””
“Because he put it there.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
She breathed heavily.
“Daniel didn’t steal it.””
Silence.
“He planted it.””
My grip tightened.
“What?””
“He knew you would find it.””
I looked toward the warehouse.
Daniel was being placed into a police car.
“Why?””
Stephanie’s voice dropped.
“Because he needs you to open it.””
My stomach turned.
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
She paused.
“But my grandmother does.””
Eleanor.
“Where is she?””
“She went to Willowbrook.””
“Why?””
Stephanie whispered:
“Because she found the final document.””
I ended the call.
Emma looked at me.
“What happened?””
“We need to get home.””
When we reached the farmhouse, Eleanor was standing in the barn.
The old wooden doors were open.
She held a document in her hands.
“You found the drive.””
I nodded.
“What is it?””
She looked at the barn floor.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She looked at me.
“That your father never intended Willowbrook to be inherited by any one person.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He created a trust.””
“For the farm?””
“For the people who built it.””
I stared.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Eleanor handed me the document.
“It does when you understand the real reason everyone fought for this land.””
I opened it.
The final page contained one sentence.
*Willowbrook belongs to the community, and no person may ever sell what generations built together.*
I looked up.
“But then why did they want it?””
Eleanor’s expression became serious.
“Because there is one clause they never knew about.””
“What clause?””
She pointed to the bottom.
A name.
My name.
May you like
And beside it:
*Final protector of Willowbrook.*
