Chapter 18: The Final Protector

The words stared back at me.

*Final protector of Willowbrook.*

I read them again.

And again.

It didn’t make sense.

My father had never told me I had any legal role.

I was just his son.

A man who left the farm to build a life elsewhere.

Someone who returned because his family needed him.

“Why me?””

Eleanor looked at the document.

“Because your father knew what would happen.””

“He knew?””

“He knew greed would eventually come for Willowbrook.””

She touched the paper.

“He wanted someone who loved the land more than money.””

I looked around the barn.

The old wood.

The tools.

The memories.

My father had built this place with his hands.

And now everyone wanted to turn it into profit.

Emma stepped closer.

“So Charles has legal control?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Only temporary protection rights.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means no one can sell or transfer Willowbrook without your approval.””

I stared.

“Then why did Robert think he could take it?””

“Because he didn’t know about this.””

A thought crossed my mind.

“Who did?””

Eleanor was quiet.

Then:

“Your mother.””

I looked at Margaret.

She stood near the barn entrance.

She looked tired.

But relieved.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Your father told me before he died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to choose this.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“If I told you that Willowbrook would become your responsibility, you might stay out of obligation.””

She smiled sadly.

“I wanted you to come home because you loved it.””

Those words hit harder than I expected.

My mother had spent years protecting my freedom.

Even when protecting me meant carrying everything alone.

Then a car door slammed outside.

We all turned.

Stephanie walked toward the barn.

Nobody spoke.

She looked different.

Not because of her clothes.

Because she no longer carried herself like someone who had won.

“I know I shouldn’t be here.””

I said nothing.

She looked at Eleanor.

“Grandmother told me everything.””

Emma crossed her arms.

“And?””

Stephanie looked at the ground.

“I want to help.””

I almost laughed.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

She nodded.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

At least she admitted it.

“But I know where my father keeps copies of the original contracts.””

I studied her.

“Why would you help us?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

“My father never wanted me to be happy.””

Silence.

“He wanted me to become him.””

The honesty surprised me.

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

The courthouse.

I answered.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end was serious.

“Mr. Hartwell, you need to come immediately.””

“Why?””

“The judge received new evidence.””

“What evidence?””

A pause.

Then:

“A confession.””

I looked at everyone.

“Whose confession?””

The answer made my blood freeze.

“Your uncle Robert Hartwell.””

I rushed to the courthouse.

Robert sat in the waiting room.

His face looked different.

Older.

Broken.

Not like the confident man from before.

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stopped.

Those words from him felt impossible.

“What happened?””

He looked down.

“I made a deal with Richard.””

I said nothing.

“He promised me money.””

“And you helped destroy your own family.””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought I was getting revenge.””

“Revenge for what?””

He looked at Margaret.

“For believing your father chose you over me.””

My mother looked shocked.

“Robert…”

“I was angry.””

He wiped his face.

“And they used that anger.””

The courtroom doors opened.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

The hearing began.

Robert confessed.

He admitted helping Richard.

He admitted creating false evidence.

He admitted stealing documents.

But then he revealed something nobody expected.

“The accident…”

He looked at me.

“Your father’s accident wasn’t just caused by Richard.””

My heart stopped.

“Who else?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

Margaret gasped.

“You?””

Robert looked destroyed.

“I didn’t mean for him to die.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me.

“The night your father died…”

May you like

A tear rolled down his face.

“I was the one driving the car that hit him.””
