Chapter 5: The Secret Elena Carried

The hospital smelled like antiseptic and old memories.

I sat in the waiting area beside Mr. Bennett, staring at the floor tiles while my entire life rearranged itself in my head.

A few hours ago, my biggest problem had been a torn dress.

Now I was sitting next to a man who claimed to be my father, waiting to uncover secrets about my missing mother.

Nothing felt real.

Mr. Bennett sat quietly beside me.

For once, he didn’t look like a billionaire.

He looked like a man who was afraid.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For every birthday I missed.””

The words caught me off guard.

He looked down at his hands.

“For every time you needed someone and I wasn’t there.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Part of me wanted to be angry.

Another part wanted to believe him.

“You said you searched for us.””

“I did.””

“Then why didn’t you find us?””

Pain crossed his face.

“Because someone made sure I wouldn’t.””

Before I could respond, a doctor approached.

“Mr. Bennett?””

We both stood.

“I’m Dr. Samuel Hayes.””

His eyes moved to me.

“You must be Amara.””

I nodded.

“You found my mother’s records?””

The doctor hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Yes.””

“Why does everyone keep looking afraid when they talk about my mother?””

Dr. Hayes sighed.

“Because Elena was involved in something much bigger than anyone realized.””

He handed Mr. Bennett a file.

“Her records were sealed twenty years ago. Someone requested that they remain confidential.””

Mr. Bennett opened the folder.

His face changed as he read.

“What is this?””

Dr. Hayes looked uncomfortable.

“Your daughter’s birth records.””

I froze.

“My birth records?””

The doctor nodded.

“There are notes here that were never included in the official file.””

Mr. Bennett turned the pages.

Then he stopped.

“What does this mean?””

Dr. Hayes looked at me.

“Amara, your mother asked us to perform a second DNA test after you were born.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, Dr. Hayes said:

“Because she believed someone had changed the original results.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

Mr. Bennett stared at the pages.

“She thought I wasn’t your father?””

The doctor nodded slowly.

“For a short time, Elena was afraid someone had altered records to separate you from Everett.””

I looked at Mr. Bennett.

“But he is my father.””

“Yes,” Dr. Hayes said.

“The updated test confirmed it.””

I felt dizzy.

My mother had known.

She had known the truth.

She knew who my father was.

But she still kept us apart.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Dr. Hayes looked down.

“Because she discovered something else.””

“What?””

He opened another document.

“This.””

I took the paper.

It was a handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

My hands shook.

I read the words.

If anyone finds this, please understand.

Everett is innocent.

But the person closest to him is not.

My breathing stopped.

Someone close to him.

The same words from years ago.

I looked at Mr. Bennett.

“Who was closest to you?””

He didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

The silence said everything.

Richard.

Mr. Bennett sat down slowly.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“He was my best friend.””

The doctor looked at him.

“Richard Vale?””

Mr. Bennett nodded.

“He helped me build my company.””

The truth felt heavier with every second.

The person who claimed to protect my mother might have been the person she was running from.

A nurse suddenly rushed into the room.

“Dr. Hayes?””

Everyone turned.

The nurse held a small envelope.

“This was found hidden inside Elena Cole’s archived file.””

Dr. Hayes looked confused.

“I thought the file was empty.””

The nurse shook her head.

“It was taped behind the back cover.””

She handed it to me.

My name was written on it.

Amara.

Only Amara.

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

No explanation.

No greeting.

Just one sentence.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then Richard found you before I could.

My blood turned cold.

Mr. Bennett leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

I looked at the next line.

And my hands began trembling.

Because my mother had written something I never expected.

She wasn’t afraid of Richard.

She was afraid of what he would do after finding me.

May you like

And beneath that sentence was a warning:

Never trust the man who says he saved you.
