Chapter 17: Elena’s Final Recording

The room remained silent as the laptop loaded the next file.

Nobody looked at each other.

Because everyone was afraid of what my mother would reveal.

The screen brightened.

My mother appeared again.

This time, she looked directly into the camera with a sadness I had never seen before.

“Amara, if you are watching this, I need you to understand something.””

She paused.

“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.””

My eyes filled instantly.

“I left because loving you was the only thing that kept me alive.””

Mr. Bennett looked away.

The guilt on his face was impossible to ignore.

My mother continued.

“Twenty years ago, I discovered someone inside Everett’s company was stealing from him.””

She took a breath.

“I thought the danger came from outside.””

The video flickered.

“I was wrong.””

Everyone leaned closer.

“The person closest to Everett was involved.””

Richard looked down.

Daniel remained still.

Mrs. Carter whispered:

“Keep watching.””

My mother continued.

“Everett, if you are watching this…”

Mr. Bennett froze.

“I need you to know that I never believed you betrayed me.””

The room changed.

Mr. Bennett looked up.

“What?””

My mother’s voice continued.

“You were manipulated.””

A tear fell from his eye.

“But I also need you to know the truth.””

The screen showed her holding a folder.

“The night I disappeared, I wasn’t running away.””

She looked frightened.

“I was trying to protect Amara from someone who had access to everything.””

I looked around.

Someone with access.

Someone powerful.

Someone close.

Then my mother said the words that made everyone freeze.

“That person was not Daniel.””

Daniel’s face changed.

It wasn’t anger.

It was relief.

“It was not Richard either.””

Richard looked stunned.

The silence was overwhelming.

My mother continued.

“The person who betrayed us was someone nobody suspected.””

The video cut for a second.

Then returned.

She held up a document.

“This evidence proves who changed the records, who followed me, and who tried to erase Amara’s identity.””

My heart raced.

“Mom, tell me.””

As if she could hear me, she looked into the camera.

“Amara, I’m sorry you had to carry this burden.””

A pause.

“But you need to know.””

The video froze.

Then the audio continued.

“The person who destroyed our family…”

Static filled the room.

Everyone waited.

Then the final words came.

“…was never a stranger.””

The screen went black.

FILE 2 OF 3.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel laughed quietly.

Not happily.

Almost sadly.

“So she kept it.””

Mr. Bennett looked at him.

“What?””

“The final file.””

Daniel stared at the laptop.

“She kept the final proof.””

Richard frowned.

“You knew about another file?””

Daniel nodded.

“Elena told me she created three recordings.””

My heart tightened.

“Where is the third?””

Nobody answered.

Then the warehouse lights suddenly turned off.

Again.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone entered.

I expected Daniel.

Or another stranger.

But it wasn’t.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Weak.

Holding onto the doorway.

My world stopped.

Because I knew her.

I knew her face.

Even after years.

Even after everything.

“Mom?””

Nobody moved.

Elena Cole looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

“My baby.””

I ran.

I didn’t think.

I didn’t care about secrets.

I didn’t care about lies.

I only knew one thing.

My mother was alive.

Her arms wrapped around me.

And for the first time in years, I felt like I was home.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I cried against her shoulder.

“You’re here.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She pulled away.

Her face was full of fear.

“Because it’s finally safe.””

I looked behind her.

“Safe from who?””

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Horror.

“Amara…”

Everyone gathered around.

Elena looked at Mr. Bennett.

Then Richard.

Then Daniel.

Finally, she looked at me.

“I wasn’t hiding from them.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who?””

She whispered:

“The person who has been protecting you your entire life.””

Everyone froze.

I felt cold.

“Who?””

My mother looked toward the warehouse entrance.

May you like

And said:

“Principal Harris.””
