Chapter 11: The Betrayal Nobody Expected

I wanted to believe Richard was lying.

I needed him to be lying.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Mrs. Carter had been the one person in my life who never made me feel small.

When other students laughed at my clothes, she reminded me my worth wasn’t measured by what I wore.

When I struggled, she stayed after class.

When my mother disappeared, she was the person who sat beside me and told me I would survive.

She couldn’t be the enemy.

“She’s lying,” I said.

The words came out before I could stop them.

Everyone looked at me.

I looked at Richard.

“You’re trying to turn me against her.””

Richard’s expression softened.

“I understand why you want to believe that.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You weren’t there.””

Richard looked away.

“No.””

Mrs. Carter stepped closer.

“Amara, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“Tell me he’s wrong.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than any accusation.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Tears formed in her eyes.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

My heart dropped.

“Find out what?””

She looked at Mr. Bennett.

Then at Richard.

Then back at me.

“The truth is complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It isn’t.””

My voice became louder.

“You either betrayed my mother or you didn’t.””

Mrs. Carter closed her eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

The words felt like a punch.

Mr. Bennett stepped forward.

“What mistake?””

She looked at him.

“I told someone where Elena was.””

Silence.

I stopped breathing.

“Who?””

Mrs. Carter looked down.

“Richard.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What?””

Mrs. Carter shook her head quickly.

“No. Not because I wanted to hurt her.””

“Then why?””

“Because I thought he was helping her.””

Richard stared at her.

“You believed me?””

“I believed you loved her.””

The sentence froze everyone.

I looked between them.

“What?””

Mrs. Carter wiped her tears.

“Richard wasn’t always the person you think he is.””

Mr. Bennett’s expression hardened.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at him.

“I’m saying Richard loved Elena.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Richard looked shocked.

“He wanted to protect her.””

“Then why did she disappear?””

Mrs. Carter looked at the floor.

“Because someone else found out.””

A terrible feeling grew inside me.

“There was someone else?””

Mrs. Carter nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Who?””

She looked at him.

“You know.””

Richard’s face changed.

“No.””

“You know exactly who.””

The warehouse felt colder.

I held my mother’s letter tighter.

“Tell me.””

Mrs. Carter looked at me.

“Your mother discovered that the person controlling everything wasn’t outside the company.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who?””

She whispered:

“It was someone inside her own family.””

I frowned.

“My family?””

I had no idea what she meant.

My mother had no siblings.

No relatives we visited.

No one.

Then Mrs. Carter said a name.

A name I had never heard before.

“Daniel Cole.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“My mother had a brother?””

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

Everyone except me.

Mr. Bennett looked stunned.

“Elena never told me.””

“She was protecting you too,” Mrs. Carter said.

Richard looked furious.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Mrs. Carter hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Mrs. Carter?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel disappeared shortly after Elena did.””

“So he’s gone?””

“No.””

Her voice dropped.

“He changed his name.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

Mrs. Carter reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old photograph.

She handed it to me.

The picture showed a man standing beside my mother.

But my eyes went immediately to the background.

A newspaper stand.

A date.

Three years ago.

And next to the man was someone familiar.

Someone I had seen recently.

My hands began shaking.

Because Daniel Cole wasn’t gone.

He had been watching me.

The entire time.

May you like

And written on the back of the photograph were five words:

He became someone you trust.
