Chapter 15: The Friend Who Betrayed Them All

Nobody spoke.

The name on the page seemed impossible.

Richard Vale.

The man who helped us.

The man who searched for my mother.

The man who claimed he wanted the truth.

I looked toward him.

He didn’t look surprised.

That was the worst part.

“Richard,” Mr. Bennett said quietly.

Richard stared at the letter.

Then he closed his eyes.

“I was hoping she wouldn’t write that.””

My stomach dropped.

“You knew?””

Richard looked at me.

“I knew she blamed me.””

“Blamed you?””

My voice rose.

“You were the one person everyone said she trusted.””

“I was.””

“Then why is your name here?””

Richard sat down slowly.

“Because I failed her.””

The room felt heavier.

Mr. Bennett held the letter.

“Explain.””

Richard looked at him.

“I loved Elena.””

Nobody interrupted.

“I loved her before you did.””

Mr. Bennett’s face changed.

But Richard continued.

“When she started investigating the company, I tried to help her.””

“Then what happened?””

“I made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Richard looked at me.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Daniel?””

Richard nodded.

“He convinced me he wanted to protect Elena.””

Mrs. Carter whispered:

“And you believed him.””

Richard looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

He took a deep breath.

“I gave him information.””

Mr. Bennett stepped back.

“What information?””

“Where Elena was hiding.””

The confession landed like a storm.

“You led him to her?””

Richard looked broken.

“I thought he was trying to save her.””

“And then?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“Then I realized he wanted the evidence she had.””

I looked at the letter again.

My mother’s words.

I trusted the wrong person.

She wasn’t talking about Daniel.

She was talking about Richard.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Richard looked at Mr. Bennett.

“Because Daniel threatened Elena.””

A pause.

“He said if I exposed him, Elena would disappear forever.””

“And you believed him?””

Richard looked at me.

“I already failed her once.””

The pain in his voice was real.

But so was the betrayal.

Then the house lights suddenly turned on.

Everyone froze.

The power had been disconnected years ago.

Someone was inside.

A slow clap echoed from the hallway.

“Beautiful.””

We turned.

Principal Harris stood there.

Daniel Cole.

The man behind everything.

He smiled.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to find this place.””

Mr. Bennett stepped forward.

“You kidnapped Elena.””

Daniel laughed.

“Such a simple way to describe something complicated.””

My fists tightened.

“Where is my mother?””

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time, his expression softened.

“She’s closer than you think.””

“What does that mean?””

He walked into the room.

“You all keep believing I’m the villain.””

He looked at Richard.

“You.””

Then Mr. Bennett.

“You.””

Then Mrs. Carter.

“All of you destroyed Elena’s life in different ways.””

My anger burned.

“And you?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I was the only one who told her the truth.””

“That’s a lie.””

“No.””

He reached into his coat.

And pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across it.

Amara.

My heart stopped.

“Your mother left this for you.””

I stepped forward.

“Why do you have it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she gave it to me.””

Nobody moved.

That wasn’t possible.

My mother trusted him?

Daniel opened the envelope slightly.

Then he said the words that shattered everything we believed.

“Before Elena disappeared…”

He looked directly at Mr. Bennett.

“She discovered your father wasn’t the person she thought he was.””

The room went silent.

Daniel handed me the envelope.

And inside was a photograph.

A photograph of my mother…

Standing beside Mr. Bennett…

The night she disappeared.

May you like

And behind them, hidden in the shadows…

Was someone holding a gun.
