Chapter 13: The Father’s Hidden Choice
The warehouse became unbearably quiet after the call ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel Cole’s final words remained hanging in the air.
Ask Everett about the night Elena vanished.
I looked at Mr. Bennett.
For the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.
Not confused.
Not hurt.
Afraid.
And that scared me more than anything.
“What did he mean?”” I asked.
Mr. Bennett looked away.
“Amara…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m done hearing half-truths.””
He closed his eyes.
“You deserve the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Everett, if there is something you haven’t told her—”
“I know.””
Mr. Bennett interrupted him.
His voice was quiet.
“I know.””
He sat down on an old wooden crate.
The billionaire who owned buildings across the world looked smaller than I had ever seen him.
“The night Elena disappeared,” he said, “I made a choice.””
My heart tightened.
“What choice?””
He looked at me.
“I chose not to follow her.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
Mr. Bennett swallowed.
“After the storage building incident, I received a message.””
“From who?””
He hesitated.
“Daniel.””
Everyone became still.
“He said Elena was alive.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you go find her?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because he threatened you.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
“He told me if I kept searching, he would hurt you.””
My anger rose.
“So you believed him?””
“I was desperate.””
“You were my father.””
The words escaped before I could stop them.
Mr. Bennett flinched.
“You were supposed to find me.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t know what it feels like growing up wondering why someone didn’t love you enough to stay.””
His face broke.
“I loved you every day.””
“Then why wasn’t I worth fighting for?””
The question destroyed him.
He looked down.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Richard stepped closer.
“Everett, tell her the rest.””
Mr. Bennett looked at him.
“You knew?””
Richard nodded.
“I knew you were trying to keep her safe.””
I turned toward Richard.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Everyone knew something.””
My voice trembled.
“Everyone except me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Mrs. Carter lowered her head.
“Amara…”
“No.””
I stepped away.
“I spent my whole life believing my mother abandoned me.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“Then I found out she was protecting me.””
I looked at Mr. Bennett.
“I spent one day believing I finally found my father.””
My voice broke.
“And now I find out you made a decision that kept me alone.””
Mr. Bennett stood.
“I regret it every single day.””
“Regret doesn’t give me those years back.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“But I can spend the rest of my life trying.””
Before I could answer, Richard’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I immediately noticed.
“What happened?””
Richard showed us the message.
A photo.
Principal Harris.
Standing outside my apartment.
Taken minutes ago.
My blood ran cold.
“He knows where I live.””
Richard nodded.
“And he knows we know.””
Mr. Bennett grabbed his coat.
“We need to leave.””
But before anyone moved, another message arrived.
This time, it wasn’t a photo.
It was a video.
Richard pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
A woman sitting in a chair.
My breath disappeared.
“Mom?””
Everyone froze.
The woman lifted her face.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Elena Cole.
My mother.
Alive.
Her voice trembled.
“If you are seeing this…”
She looked directly into the camera.
“…then Daniel has finally revealed himself.””
I covered my mouth.
My mother continued.
“Amara, I’m sorry.””
Tears streamed down her face.
“I wanted to come home.””
A pause.
“But I couldn’t.””
Then she whispered the words that changed everything.
“Because the person holding me prisoner…”
The video glitched.
The screen went black.
The final frame appeared.
A reflection in the glass behind my mother.
A person standing there.
Watching her.
May you like
And I recognized the silhouette.
It was Principal Harris.
